MyTime, UnassignedRead – Exodus 12
What does it say?
The final plague caused the death of the Egyptians’ firstborn males. Pharaoh commanded Moses and his people to leave Egypt.
What does it mean?
God’s final action against the Egyptians resulted in the death of all the firstborn sons and firstborn male animals in the land. However, the children of Israel were given specific instructions in advance to protect their sons. The blood of a lamb sprinkled on their doorframes signaled they were God’s chosen people, and their sons were spared. As the cries of death rang throughout Egypt, Pharaoh witnessed the harsh reality of his refusal to heed God’s warnings. He summoned Moses and commanded him to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt.
How should I respond?
This passage offers a beautiful picture of Christ as our ‘Passover Lamb.’ His blood, shed on the cross, has the power to cleanse you from all the wrongs you have done, and He invites you to put your trust in Him. Have you claimed His sacrifice as your own and placed his blood over the ‘doorframe’ of your heart? Just as the blood on the doorframes saved the Israelite children from death, Christ’s blood protects believers from eternal death. If you have not invited Christ into your life, would you consider doing so today? By simply confessing your sins, asking His forgiveness and placing your trust in God, you will be set free to serve Him and live a life that is distinctly different.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Exodus 9,10,11
What does it say?
The Egyptians were faced with many plagues at the hand of God; however, the Israelites were unharmed.
What does it mean?
A distinction was clearly being made between the children of Israel and the Egyptians. The effects of the plagues were destroying the Egyptians’ livestock, crops and health while the children of Israel remained untouched. God’s hand of protection hovered over them despite the raging hardships and suffering that was swirling through Egypt. The Egyptians, however, were painfully enduring the consequences of Pharaoh’s refusal to free the people. Finally, Pharaoh attempts to negotiate with Moses for a partial release, but God reminds him that He isn’t interested in compromises. He will free His people regardless of Pharaoh’s stubbornness.
How should I respond?
Leadership tends to bring out the best or the worst in people. How do you handle situations when you are in charge? When God places people in positions of leadership, He expects them to follow His instructions and treat others with fairness and respect. Has God placed others under your authority? What changes do you need to make in order to lead them in a way that honors God? Your choices regarding personal obedience to God trickle down through your organization, business and family. Which leader will you emulate: Moses or Pharaoh?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Exodus 7:14-8:32
What does it say?
Because Pharaoh refused to listen, the Lord began a series of plagues on Egypt. After each plague, Pharaoh was given an opportunity to change his mind.
What does it mean?
As God moved His hand against the Egyptians, Pharaoh became more resistant. Despite the hardships and suffering of his own people, Pharaoh was unmoved. His heart was oblivious to the needs of his people and the Israelites. When Pharaoh’s magicians could no longer match the plagues God was bringing upon the Egyptians, they urged Pharaoh to release the Israelites. Unfortunately, Pharaoh was only interested in bargaining with Moses and his God. Pharaoh promised release of the people in exchange for relief from the devastating effects, but he continually failed to keep his end of the bargain.
How should I respond?
You are not the only one impacted by the consequences of your choices. When you fail to listen to God, others are affected negatively through your disobedience. The longer you refuse to listen, the easier it is to turn away from God’s instructions. Out of His great love and compassion, God will do whatever it takes to get your attention. What things or people in your life are distracting you from hearing God’s voice? What can you do this week to align your actions with what God is asking you to do?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Exodus 7 1-13
What does it say?
Aaron was appointed by God to serve as a prophet and spokesman for Moses. God promised to pour out His mighty acts of judgment upon the land of Egypt.
What does it mean?
Even at the age of eighty, Moses was willing to obey God. Despite God’s warning that things would get worse before they got better, he still obeyed. Moses learned that God would transform his weakness and empower him to stand even in the presence of a stubborn king. While God performed many miraculous signs through Moses and Aaron, Pharaoh refused to let the people go. Why? Because through Pharaoh’s resistance and the Lord’s mighty acts, the Egyptians would know that the Lord was against them and that He was the One delivering the Israelites. Moses and Aaron were God’s chosen leaders, but God was the ruling authority defending His people.
How should I respond?
When have you allowed your age to interfere with what God is asking you to do? It’s easy to offer excuses such as, ‘I’m too old, someone else can do that now,’ or ‘I’m not old enough to take on that kind of responsibility.’ Or maybe you’ve chosen to disobey God because the task seemed overwhelming. The key is to take your focus off the size of the challenge and put it on the size of your God. Some tasks might take you out of your comfort zone. But as you exchange your weakness for His strength, God will empower you to overcome any obstacles that stand in your way. What is God asking you to do?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Exodus 6
What does it say?
God reassured Moses of His plans to deliver Israel. Moses conveyed God’s words to the people. When they refused to listen, Moses was reluctant to confront Pharaoh.
What does it mean?
The children of Israel found it easier to define God in their own terms rather than trust in His unchangeable character. Nothing was going the way they expected, and even Moses had reverted to offering God excuses for why he couldn’t lead the people. Discouragement had caused them to forget what God had promised and what He had done in the past. God’s instructions to Moses didn’t change, but He did reassure Moses that Pharaoh was no match for Him.
How should I respond?
When you experience resistance, how do you handle it? What might cause you to turn to people or things rather than to God? Does He seem distant? Any temporary solutions apart from God will always end in greater disappointment. When we zero in on the pain and suffering we are experiencing in the moment, we often fail to remember that He hears our cries and acts to meet our needs. Anything that touches your life is visible to God. He is fully aware of your joy, success, pain and heartbreaks. He is present in each moment: the good and the bad. His intervention in your life may not look like what you expected, but God is faithful to keep His promises.
February 27, 2026
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Exodus 5
What does it say?
Moses and Aaron confronted Pharaoh asking him to let God’s people go. Pharaoh refused and made their life harder. Moses questioned why God sent him.
What does it mean?
The road to freedom was not going to be easy for the children of Israel. Pharaoh was more concerned with keeping them busy than releasing them to worship a God he didn’t even know. Rather than meet their request with approval, Pharaoh made their lives even more difficult. Moses had sought God’s help, but their circumstances became worse rather than better, leaving Moses and the people feeling powerless, Moses chose to pour out his discouragement to the Lord and ask Him, once again, to act on behalf of His people.
How should I respond?
Obeying God is often met with opposition. Satan does not want us to do what God asks; therefore, he strives to make our circumstances difficult. By creating discouragement, causing doubts, and pointing blame, Satan attempts to turn us against God. When has your obedience to God made your situation more challenging? How did you respond? Doing the right thing and getting a negative response can tempt you to take matters into your own hands, leaving God out of the equation. Will you follow Moses’ example and talk to the Lord about your discouragement? Waiting for God’s timing and walking in obedience will ultimately result in victory.
February 26, 2026
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Exodus 4
What does it say?
Moses questioned his ability to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. God gave Moses miraculous signs and offered Aaron to be his spokesperson.
What does it mean?
God gave Moses three miraculous signs to prove that he had been sent by God. Even after witnessing his staff turning into a snake, his hand becoming diseased, and the Nile River turning into blood, Moses still focused on his own abilities. God promised to help him speak and teach him what to say. When Moses asked God to use someone else, God was angered and offered Moses’ brother, Aaron, to be his spokesperson. God never intended for Moses to act in his own strength. Only by admitting his weaknesses and relying on God’s strength would Moses accomplish the huge task before him.
How should I respond?
What excuses have you offered to God? Focusing on your abilities and magnifying your weaknesses will always justify your excuses. However, when God gives you opportunities, you must exchange your doubts for His strength. What is God asking you to do right now? Ask God to open your eyes to see how He has prepared you for the task. Who has God strategically placed in your life to assist you? Don’t miss out on what God has purposed for you to do. He will empower you, He will go with you, and God will be pleased when you trust Him to do what seems impossible.
February 25, 2026
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Exodus 3
What does it say?
The Lord told Moses, through a burning bush, that he had been chosen to deliver God’s people from Egypt. Moses was to tell Pharaoh to set the people of Israel free.
What does it mean?
Moses had developed humility through his experiences as a shepherd in the wilderness over the last forty years. Moses could not comprehend how God could use him for such an enormous task. The Lord, however, reminds him that it is not because of Moses’ talents, but because of God’s power that success will come. God had chosen to free His people through the person of Moses, and all Moses had to do was to obey in humble service to the God who identifies Himself as ‘I AM.’ Moses would now have to learn complete and utter dependence on the Lord.
How should I respond?
God is still in the business of choosing ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Like Moses, the call from God seldom comes when we’re looking for it but rather as we faithfully complete the regular, mundane, everyday duties of life. What does God want to accomplish through you? How can He use you to bless others? If you knew the big picture, it might be a little scary; but remember, it’s God’s strength and power, not your own. Are you listening for God’s guidance and direction? Walk in humility and obedience to God, depending completely on Him, and you may be surprised at what He can do through you.
February 24, 2026
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Exodus 2
What does it say?
Moses was rescued by Pharaoh’s daughter and grew up in Pharaoh’s Court. After killing an Egyptian slave master, he fled to Midian and married a shepherdess.
What does it mean?
Moses grew up identifying with two cultures. He was born a Hebrew, but was raised and educated as Egyptian royalty. Moses may have felt that his distinctive position qualified him to act as a savior when he saw an Egyptian assaulting a Hebrew slave. But he acted impulsively and outside of God’s will by killing the Egyptian slave master. As a result, Pharaoh called for his death, and Moses fled for his life. He tried to assume a position to which God had not yet called or equipped him. But God never forgot His people during Moses’ forty years of preparation in the wilderness. A much humbler Moses would emerge from Midian as the deliverer of the Israelites.
How should I respond?
It’s hard not to take matters into our own hands when we see injustice in the world. Even in the everyday stuff of life, we notice people in authority who mishandle and mismanage what has been entrusted to them. God desires to use believers as an influence on the world, but every action must be at His prompting and in His timing. When you recognize that you are simply the instrument in God’s hand, it allows you to become part of what He is doing. What outcome are you trying to force? Have you assumed a role or position that God hasn’t given to you? Humbly follow God and allow Him to guide your path. He needs to equip you before He can elevate you.
February 23, 2026
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Exodus 1
What does it say?
The Israelites grew in number, which intimidated the current Pharaoh. So he made them slaves and ordered his people to throw every Hebrew baby boy into the Nile River.
What does it mean?
The desire of the Egyptians to enslave the people of Israel came from fear. The Pharaoh, who did not know or care about Joseph, feared that the people of Israel might rise up against them or side with Pharaoh’s enemies against Egypt. This fear led to a desire to control the Israelites by enslaving them and killing their male babies. Pharaoh hoped that this would serve to weaken them, but God intervened and multiplied the Hebrews, in spite of Pharaoh’s efforts.
How should I respond?
Nothing blinds you to reality faster than fear. It can cause irrational, manipulative, and even cruel behavior. When circumstances are outside of our control, it’s easy to give in to fear. What is your response in those situations? Do you rise up against others in an effort to protect yourself, like Pharaoh? Maybe, like the Israelites, your worst fears have been realized. Are you being treated unfairly or unjustly? Will you continue to humbly trust God to fight your battles and work the situation out? God had a plan to free His people from oppression, and God has a plan for you as well. Stay faithful and allow God to work on your behalf.
February 22, 2026
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 50:15-26
What does it say?
Joseph reassured his brothers of his forgiveness and promised to provide for their families. He asked for an oath from his family to take his bones out of Egypt when God delivered them from there to the land He promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
What does it mean?
Joseph’s willingness to forgive his brothers for the harm they had caused him was evidence of mature faith. Joseph knew that God is the greater Judge and had actually brought something good out of what they had intended for evil. Joseph’s obedience in the midst of God’s providence moved him from slavery to prison to power. That knowledge and intimacy with God removed thoughts of retaliation and replaced them with the genuine desire to provide good things for his brothers and their families.
How should I respond?
At one point or another, we’ve all been hurt. It’s difficult to imagine any good coming from some situations. But God is still Judge and Sovereign Lord over every hurt you’ve experienced. Who are you having difficulty forgiving? How has that situation exercised your faith? If you can’t see yet how God might ‘intend for good’ what someone else ‘intended for harm,’ keep obeying, praying and trusting. With God’s help, you can forgive and even desire good things for that person. Remember, it’s impossible to have intimacy with God and refuse to forgive those who’ve wronged you.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 49:29-50:14
What does it say?
After Jacob died, Joseph used his relationship with Pharaoh to carry out his father’s last instructions to be buried in Canaan with his fathers.
What does it mean?
Being at peace with God and having blessed his children, Jacob slipped into eternity to meet God face to face. Utilizing his authority with Pharaoh, Joseph and his brothers honored their father by burying Jacob according to his instructions. Joseph’s power as Prime Minister and his fame as the savior of Egypt called attention to the respect and honor he gave his father upon his death. The funeral procession into Canaan was a grand display and witness to the Canaanites—so much so that they renamed the land. Once again, Joseph’s actions pointed everyone around him to the God of his father, Israel.
How should I respond?
How you treat your family speaks volumes to those around you about the validity of your faith. Do you, like Joseph, treat your family with such honor and respect that it causes others to take notice? Find a way to show appreciation to your parents or grandparents for their provision, discipline, counsel or godly foundation for life. What tangible way can you demonstrate respect for your parents this week, whether they are living or deceased? What kind of family legacy are you leaving your children? The way you care for your aging parents is a model for your children. Follow Joseph’s example and point everyone around you to Jesus by demonstrating His love for those closest to you…your family.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 49:1-28
What does it say?
Jacob blessed his sons, describing their present character and prophetically revealing their future blessings and adversities.
What does it mean?
Through God’s enabling, Jacob told his sons how their individual character and choices would impact their future, as well as that of their descendants. Several of his sons received Jacob’s rebuke for their wrong choices. But two of his sons, Judah and Joseph, were given extensive blessings including the promise of God’s presence and protection for future generations. From Judah will come ‘Shiloh’ or peace. (Jesus came from the tribe of Judah.) From Joseph, who had been strengthened by the ‘Mighty One of Jacob…the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,’ would come great provision and blessing. All of Jacob’s sons—’the twelve tribes of Israel’ — received the special blessing of being a part of God’s chosen family.
How should I respond?
Siblings growing up in the same home and environment often turn out differently as adults. From childhood, individual choices shape the character of each person. The decisions you make each day affect your future as well as future generations of your family. What consequences might your grandchildren inherit from a choice you make today? What thoughts, attitudes or actions do you need to change in order to leave your children a blessing rather than a burden? If you don’t make God a part of your present, He will not be a part of your future.
February 19, 2026
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 48
What does it say?
Jacob adopted Joseph’s sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, giving a greater inheritance to Joseph’s family. Ephraim, the younger son, was prophetically given the blessing of the first-born.
What does it mean?
When a man is about to die, he often recognizes and shares what is most important to him. Jacob knew that birthright and legal tradition were subject to the sovereign choice of God. In this case, additional portions of land were given to Joseph’s sons. All of this was setting in motion God’s plan for the land and the nation of Israel. Jacob shared his greatest blessing when he described God as the One ‘who has been my Shepherd all my life’ and ‘has delivered me from all harm.’ The greatest inheritance Jacob left his family was not the land God had promised—but faith in the God who keeps His promises.

Parents usually want to provide for their children to have a better life than they had. We spend countless hours working, planning and saving in order to give them what they need and much of what they desire. But how much thought have you given to building a spiritual inheritance for the next generation? Whether you are a parent, grandparent, uncle, teacher or neighbor – your life is shaping and influencing someone younger than you. What will they believe about God based on the testimony of your life? The greatest gift you have been given is faith in Jesus Christ, an eternal inheritance.

What does it say?
Joseph administers a God-given plan to save everyone in Egypt from famine. Jacob blesses his family and asks to be buried with his fathers in the Promised Land.
What does it mean?
Joseph’s obedience to God during so many difficult years had given him the perfect platform to save his family and the Egyptians from an epic famine. Joseph’s previous experiences running Potiphar’s house and being in charge of the prison had taught him to rely on God and seek His wisdom. As a result, Jacob was able to live out his years watching his sons and grandchildren live in God’s provision. Although Jacob knew Goshen was a good land for his family at that time, he remained focused on the greater land God had promised to him and his children. God had preserved His people.
How should I respond?
In what position of influence has God placed you? Whether you’re a parent, employer or friend, the decisions you make every day affect more than just your own life. For what situation do you need wisdom today? As you obey God, He will provide guidance for each challenge you face. As a result, you will be a blessing to your family, co-workers and community. You never know…God may be using today’s circumstances to prepare you for greater responsibility. Will you be up to the task?

What does it say?
Jacob, now advanced in age, was ready for the trip to see his son Joseph. When Jacob’s family arrived in Egypt, Pharaoh welcomed them and offered to let them settle in the best part of the land.
What does it mean?
Jacob had no idea his life would change so drastically when he sent his sons to Egypt. How long he must have waited and prayed for word that all was well with his children! He had twelve sons, but three were thought either dead or in great peril. They returned, however, not only with Benjamin and Simeon but also with news that Joseph was alive and well and making preparations for the entire family to come to Egypt. God graciously assured Jacob that the trip was in His will. The reunion between father and son was all that could be desired.
How should I respond?
It’s been said that a parent is only as happy as their most unhappy child. No matter how old or where your children are, their burdens and challenges are yours. You may currently be at peace with their choices, or you may be praying constantly for them to turn to God. Even though you want to protect them from hurt, the truth is you cannot. How can you pray specifically for your children today? What opportunity do you have this week to show them God’s love? Their two greatest needs are your unconditional love and God’s saving grace!

What does it say?
Joseph and his brothers shared an emotional reunion. Pharaoh invited Joseph’s entire family to move to Egypt and promised to give them the best land.
What does it mean?
Joseph had waited nearly twenty years for this family reunion. The trials and hardships that previously seemed so overwhelming now fell into perspective as Joseph saw how those experiences had served to save his family. He had been strategically placed in a position that literally took his family from famine to feasting. Rather than focus on the years of agony, Joseph chose to focus on the sense of purpose he felt. The forgiveness he generously gave would never be forgotten. Joseph’s entire life had led to this moment. God used the suffering and hardship of one man, Joseph, to preserve the future nation of Israel.
How should I respond?
No one wants to linger in painful circumstances. It doesn’t matter if the pain is physical or emotional, we try to end it as quickly as possible. Like Joseph, you may not see how God can use your difficult circumstances for anything positive while in the midst of them, but given time your perspective can change. God doesn’t cause every situation we find ourselves in, but if He has allowed it, then He can use it to accomplish His purpose for you and for those your life will impact (Rom. 8:28.) What past situation do you now see in a different light? Ask God for His perspective on the circumstances you face today.

What does it say?
Joseph’s brothers again left Egypt with food but were soon overtaken and accused of theft. Once more in front of Joseph, Judah pleaded to be substituted for Benjamin, who appeared to be guilty.
What does it mean?
Joseph’s brothers were about to be tested to determine if their hearts had changed in the years since selling their younger brother into slavery. They were stunned when the supposed object of robbery was found in Benjamin’s bag. Joseph was willing to let them go only by keeping Benjamin as his slave. Judah, full of emotion and concern for their father’s life, begged Joseph to accept him as a substitute for his younger brother. This was the confirmation Joseph desperately wanted to hear. He had given them a chance to prove themselves and was not disappointed. Restoration to his family was now possible.
How should I respond?
Chances are—your family squabbles haven’t escalated to the same level as Joseph’s. However, conflict between family members can cause division that lasts weeks, months and even years. What individuals have you had a falling out with? Have you written them off? Years of disagreements can lead to thoughts such as, ‘They’ll never change,’ or ‘They don’t deserve another chance.’ What can you do today to start mending those relationships? Will you choose to pray that God will bless them and soften their hearts? Remember, as long as you each have breath, there’s hope that the relationship can be restored.

What does it say?
Jacob sent his sons on another trip to Egypt to buy grain. Judah knew their only hope would be to take Benjamin with them, so he guaranteed Benjamin’s safety to their father.
What does it mean?
The fact that Judah took personal responsibility for Benjamin’s safety was evidence that he had changed. It had been Judah who urged his brothers to sell Joseph (rather than kill him). Joseph put a plan in motion to see if they were truly repentant. From the time the men arrived at Joseph’s home, nothing was as they expected. They were treated as honored guests — not thieves — and we seating according to birth order. The household even seemed to know the God of Abraham (vv. 23, 29). When they left Jacob on their journey to Egypt, they could not have anticipated the feast that would be set before them. Who was this merciful and generous ‘governor’ of Egypt?
How should I respond?
Although this passage isn’t written about Jesus, there are parallels between Joseph’s relationship with his brothers and our relationship with Christ. He — knowing your heart of repentance for your deeds—forgives you freely and erases the transgression. He has gone to prepare a place for you (John 14:2) and will prepare a feast for you (Ps. 23:5). You will enjoy His presence forever (Rev. 21). God knows everything about you and loves you anyway. Have you bowed in recognition of the King of kings and Lord of lords?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 42
What does it say?
Famine became severe in Canaan, and Jacob knew his family would survive only by purchasing grain from Egypt. Ten brothers made the journey, not realizing their younger brother was now the person in charge of the food supply.
What does it mean?
During Joseph’s years in Egypt, the Bible says nothing about the maturing of his older brothers whose characters had been steeped in jealousy and violence. Surely it would have been sufficient for some to journey to Egypt, yet God had all the sons but Benjamin go, giving Joseph the chance to hear their unified regret. Their conversation revealed years of guilt over their treatment of Joseph, causing him to be overwhelmed with emotion. Even so, Joseph decided to test whether or not their hearts had truly changed. He was not ready to reveal himself until he knew Benjamin was truly alive and well.
How should I respond?
Words spoken in haste or knee-jerk reactions from the past can cause feelings of guilt and regret. It’s not always possible to go to people you’ve wronged in order to seek forgiveness; but when you do, it can bring healing to everyone involved. What relationship in your life needs to be restored? What specific words or actions do you need to apologize for? Have you said or done something this week that needs to be set right? Guilt and regret over the past accomplish nothing unless you attach it to action in the present. Regardless of the other person’s response, you can be released from guilt.

What does it say?
Two years passed, and Pharaoh became troubled by a series of dreams. God gave Joseph the interpretations, and he was then placed in a position directly under Pharaoh.
What does it mean?
God had been refining Joseph for most of his life as he went from one trial to another. Each time he had reacted with godly integrity and strength of character. He had been faithful in each set of circumstances, and now God was ready to elevate him to a position higher than he could have imagined. Being brought before the Pharaoh of an idolatrous nation, he unhesitatingly gave the true, living God credit for his life and wisdom.
How should I respond?
Those who work with valuable metals know that the long purifying process involves two vital parts, heating and refining. As the heat causes impurities to rise to the top, they are skimmed off, and the process starts again. How has God been purifying your life? What heat or trial has God allowed to linger? The Bible says that once you have been tested and purified, you will come forth as gold (Job 23:10). Are you, like Joseph, ready to give God the credit for His strength and grace in your life? When the opportunities arise, don’t hesitate – God has been developing your character for just such a moment.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 40
What does it say?
Two servants of Pharaoh were thrown into prison and placed under Joseph’s care. After Joseph interpreted their dreams, one servant was released but soon forgot him.
What does it mean?
Even though Joseph was wrongfully imprisoned, he used his God-given abilities to serve his fellow-prisoners. He could have wallowed in self-pity and spent his energy questioning God. Instead, he chose to serve God in every way he could — exactly where he was — because it was the place God allowed him to be. Joseph’s actions were from a heart that truly trusted God for his life. How was Joseph repaid for his kindness to the cup-bearer? He ‘did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.’ Joseph would have to wait for God’s reward in God’s time.
How should I respond?
At some point, we’ve all done the right thing, only to have it overlooked. It’s easy to feel unappreciated when no one seems to notice the time and energy you’ve given at home, at work, or in your community. When those emotions arise, ask yourself, ‘Why did I do it in the first place?’ Were you trying to impress someone or promote your own interests? Or, was your motivation purely to use your talents and gifts to serve the Lord? Others may forget the good things you’ve done, but God hasn’t. Stay committed to serving Him in every way you can, right where you are. His is the only pat on the back that really counts.

What does it say?
Potiphar, an Egyptian officer, bought Joseph as a slave. Potiphar’s house was soon blessed in all that was within Joseph’s control until false accusations sent him to prison.
What does it mean?
If anyone ever had a reason to be angry or bitter at circumstances, it was Joseph! He is an example of how to respond when treated unfairly. He was sold by jealous brothers, falsely accused by his master’s wife, and unjustly imprisoned after fleeing to protect his integrity. Although he suffered greatly (Psalm 105:17-19), Joseph continued to be so committed to God that soon he was in a position of authority in the prison, again with God blessing him beyond measure. Rather than becoming bitter, Joseph allowed God to shape and mold him through difficulty.
How should I respond?
Are you, like Joseph, in a time of adversity? How has someone’s treatment of you caused pain and grief? Your response to those situations will play a huge part in determining who you become. Times like those will either increase your faith in God or cause you to become angry with Him and turn away. Do a self-examination; is any area of your heart being withheld from God because of bitterness from a wound? Give the hurt to God and commit to honoring Him in the midst of it. God can use even the worst circumstances in your life to make you more like Him.

What does it say?
Judah made a new life in a Canaanite town. God killed two of his three sons for wickedness. After Judah sent his daughter-in-law Tamar home to live as a widow, she deceived him, became pregnant, and had Judah’s twin sons, Perez and Zerah.
What does it mean?
Israel and his sons were the only family in Canaan that worshipped the one, true God. Nevertheless, Judah left his family and immersed himself in a godless culture. As a result, Judah’s family was heavily influenced by the wickedness around them, costing two sons their very lives. Fearful of losing his last son, Judah deceitfully returned Tamar to her father’s house rather than giving her in marriage to his youngest son. In return, Tamar deceived Judah and became pregnant. Disobedience and deceit had plunged Judah’s life into one of disappointment and regret.
How should I respond?
The encouragement of godly companions is as important in our society as in Judah’s day. Immersing yourself in today’s culture is an invitation to a sinful lifestyle. In what way has our society influenced you? How has that influence affected your home and family? Having someone keep you accountable is as necessary for your spirit as a doctor is for your body. If you haven’t already done so, ask someone to pray for you each day and hold you accountable as you live for Christ. Will you live a life of faithfulness or regret?

What does it say?
Jacob had many sons, but favored Joseph. His jealous brothers became even more jealous after hearing about Joseph’s dreams that they would one day bow to him. So, they sold him as a slave and led their father to believe he was killed by wild animals.
What does it mean?
Jacob was no stranger to parental favoritism; he had been favored by his mother and had fallen into the same pattern with Joseph. Jealousy led his brothers to scheme for a way to get rid of their younger brother. They were not willing to accept that Joseph’s dreams could have been revelations from God. As a result, they turned to their own misguided ways to deal with the issue—choosing to sell Joseph into slavery. Favoritism and jealousy had caused discord and separation between two generations of siblings.
How should I respond?
The attitude of jealousy is a problem for many. Whether it occurs in the home, at school, or at work, jealousy can cause a major problem if not dealt with correctly. What causes your feelings of jealousy? How have your attempts to handle it on your own been misguided? First, take the situation to God who loves you as much as He loves anyone else. Second, if you need to work something out with someone, don’t delay; waiting only gives time for negative emotions to fester. As a parent, ask God to reveal any words or actions that show favoritism toward one child. Action on your part today sets the stage for healthy sibling relationships in the future.

What does it say?
God told Jacob to return to Bethel. There, God renewed His promises with Jacob and gave him the name, Israel.
What does it mean?
Difficult times were ahead for Jacob—the death of his beloved wife Rachel while giving birth to her second son Benjamin and later the death of his father. Two things helped prepare Jacob for the rough road ahead. First, God called Jacob to go back to a place of major spiritual significance, Bethel. He sought to strengthen Jacob by renewing His promises to him. Next, Jacob needed to remove false gods that had crept into his life and his family. Spiritual renewal required renewed commitment. God was drawing Jacob into an even deeper relationship, which would bring comfort in the days ahead.
How should I respond?
Some periods of life are more difficult than others. We seldom know ahead of time that we’re headed into a rough season until we are in the middle of it. The same two things that helped Jacob can still help us. Where is your ‘Bethel’? What places or events hold significance in your spiritual growth? Those are reminders that God is present and ever-faithful, even when life seems to fall apart. Then, where have you gotten off track and complacent in your relationship with God? What ungodly influence needs to be removed? God is patiently calling you back to Himself. He desires to give you the strength and comfort needed for everything you will face.

What does it say?
Shechem, the son of a city ruler, violated Dinah, Jacob’s daughter. Even though he sought to marry her, Jacob’s sons deceived and destroyed the men of the city.
What does it mean?
Our last chapter was a beautiful picture of love and forgiveness. Here we see what a lack of forgiveness and revenge can do. Shechem and his father came to Jacob with a repentant spirit and a desire to make things right. They even went as far as submitting to circumcision to be able to intermarry with Jacob’s family. Yet the sons of Jacob, bent on revenge, held hatred and bitterness for the men of Shechem. Led by Simeon and Levi, they attacked and killed all of the men, plundered the city, and took the women and children captive. The children of Jacob responded to their anger in a way that made them just as guilty as Shechem.
How should I respond?
Our first instinct is to lash out and strike back when we or someone close to us is harmed. But anger and vengeance have a way of blinding us to the truth. When we let anger get the best of us, we no longer see things clearly and forget the grace that has been shown to us by God for our sin. Who has wronged you? Take time right now to search your heart. Are you harboring anger against that person? Now is the time to give your anger, hurt, and bitterness to God. When you remember that Christ has forgiven you, it is easier to forgive others.

What does it say?
Jacob prepared to be reunited with Esau. He separated his family by their wives and went ahead of them. When he saw Esau, he bowed down before him. Esau saw Jacob and ran to him, threw his arms around him, and wept.
What does it mean?
Jacob by his actions was seeking his brother’s forgiveness. The gifts he sent ahead of him were an attempt to pay back what he stole from his brother when he took his birthright and blessing. He humbled himself by bowing before his brother to show his repentance for how he had treated him. Jacob was met with unexpected forgiveness from Esau. Upon seeing Jacob, Esau ran to meet him. He threw his arms around Jacob and kissed him. This simple act by Esau showed that Jacob had nothing to fear and that their relationship as brothers had been restored.
How should I respond?
What relationship in your life needs to be restored? This passage is a beautiful picture of what God can do in a life when it is surrendered to Him. From whom do you need to seek forgiveness? Maybe your family is struggling relationally, and you don’t know how to fix it. Be encouraged because God is able to reach even those farthest from Him. Take time now to pray for your family. Ask God how you can show humility to those you may have offended. God is in the business of mending relationships. Ask in faith, and wait for Him to do the impossible.

What does it say?
Jacob prepared to return home to face Esau. As a result of wrestling with God all night, his named was changed to Israel, and he received a permanent limp.
What does it mean?
Jacob was wise in preparing for the worst, not knowing if Esau still planned to kill him for taking his birthright twenty years earlier. As Jacob went off by himself to pray, he had no idea that the meeting with Esau would pale by comparison to the encounter he was about to have with God. Before the night and the wrestling match were over, God would change Jacob’s life and his name. No longer was he Jacob, the ‘deceiver’ but Israel (‘one who has power with God’). As dawn broke, he returned to his family limping—a physical reminder that he was forever changed by God’s touch.
How should I respond?
Many times we find ourselves in situations in which we have no control over the outcome. But we can put our hope in God to deliver us in times of crisis and uncertainty. Like Jacob, remind yourself of what God has already promised to do. Take some time to find and ponder some of the promises God has made to you in His Word, and then get alone with Him and pray. Even if you ‘wrestle’ with God over the situation or the outcome, time alone in His presence is life changing. What crisis are you facing today? You can trust Him. His ‘touch’ on your life will be evidence that you’ve had an encounter with God.

What does it say?
Jacob separated from Laban. Jacob’s faithfulness and obedience were met with anger and accusation.
What does it mean?
Jacob served Laban faithfully for twenty years, and in that time he multiplied Laban’s wealth and family exponentially. Then, as he prepared to return home, his diligence and obedience were met with deceit and hostility. After so many years of faithfulness, he was treated as a thief and a liar. He could easily have questioned why God allowed this to happen. Instead, he chose obedience, and God showed that all along He had been faithful in protecting and prospering Jacob.
How should I respond?
There are times when circumstances are the opposite of what we expect even when our actions come from pure motives. In those moments, it is easy to feel hopeless or alone. Though we may not see it, God is always actively involved in the lives of His children. We can choose to focus on the circumstances or on the God who is constantly watching over us. Do you believe that God is actively involved in your life even when you can’t see it? Take time to pray and ask God what He is doing in your life. You may discover that even though you didn’t realize it, He has been moving all along.

What does it say?
Leah, Rachel, Bilhah and Zilpah give birth to eleven sons of Jacob.
What does it mean?
Driven by jealousy and discontent, Leah and Rachel turned childbearing into a competition. Even in the face of repeated blessing, the sisters were not content with what God had given them. They each wanted what the other had: Leah coveted the love that Jacob showed to Rachel, and Rachel yearned for Leah’s ability to have children. Again and again they competed in their search for contentment only to find frustration. No matter what they were given, or what they achieved, they could not enjoy it because their focus was on winning rather than being thankful.
How should I respond?
At times we may find we are not satisfied with what we have or where we are in life. It’s easy to think the solution is just around the corner and that contentment will finally be found in the next achievement or possession. This is never the case since those things provide only temporary satisfaction. God has designed us to find contentment in our relationship with Him. And how is this done? Commit each day to thank Him for everything He has given you. Focus on pursuing Him and praising Him for what you do have rather than what you don’t. Remember that the contentment found in Him is the only contentment that lasts.

What does it say?
Jacob labored seven years for the right to marry Rachel, but he was deceived by her father, Laban. Rachel was given to Jacob after Leah’s bridal week, but he had to work seven more years for her.
What does it mean?
The custom of the day required that the oldest daughter be married before the youngest. When Laban made his agreement with Jacob, he knowingly deceived him with the promise of marrying the younger daughter, Rachel. This is not the first time deception was used in this family. Jacob deceived his father for his older brother Esau’s blessing. This was done at the encouragement of Rebekah (Laban’s sister). In both cases, what was rightfully earned was deceitfully taken with significant long-term cost. Now Jacob understands how Esau felt as he experienced firsthand the price of deception.
How should I respond?
Deception is dangerous and can have significant long-term impact. The choice Jacob faced is the same choice we face when we encounter this behavior: Do we focus on the wrong done to us, or do we allow God to use it to shine light into similar places in our lives? As difficult as it might be sometimes, eliminating deceit in our homes and our families shows the character God desires in all of us. Ask God to show you where deception exists in your life, and with His help, eliminate it.

What does it say?
Early in Jacob’s long journey, he had a dream of angels going up and down a ladder to Heaven. God spoke and reaffirmed the covenant He had made with Abraham and Isaac.
What does it mean?
This is the first time we observe the Lord speaking directly to Jacob. As a young boy, he must have heard his grandfather Abraham talk of God’s covenant promises and His faithfulness. He was fifteen when Abraham died. Isaac also spoke to Jacob of the Lord their God. Now, God Himself spoke personally with Jacob. God made no conditions on the promises He made. Awed by what he had seen and heard, Jacob said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place.’ Knowing that this place would always be significant to him, Jacob set up a stone memorial and made a commitment to the Lord who promised, ‘I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’
How should I respond?
Have you only heard about Jesus from others or have you had your own divine encounter with God? When did your relationship with God become personal? Nothing compares to hearing His voice whisper to your soul. Jacob called the place of his encounter ‘awesome…the house of God…the gate of heaven.’ When God speaks, how are you moved? What is He calling you to do? Where is He calling you to go? God has His very best in store for you if you will trust Him, obey Him, and follow where He would have you go.

What does it say?
When Esau’s hatred intensified to a determination to kill Jacob, Rebekah convinced Isaac to send Jacob to the home of her brother Laban.
What does it mean?
Esau’s hatred for Jacob burned in his mind to the point of planning his murder. Upon hearing this, Rebekah intervened once again to protect the son she loved. She told Jacob to leave until Esau forgot about the matter. She persuaded Isaac to send Jacob to Paddan Aran to her brother’s house under the ruse of wanting Jacob to find a suitable wife—not a wife from ‘the daughters of Heth.’ Isaac agreed, blessed Jacob again, and sent him to his uncle’s home. It is unlikely that she ever saw Jacob again— a high price to pay for their deception. To retaliate, Esau married the daughter of his Uncle Ishmael.
How should I respond?
How many times do you think Rebekah longed to have her son back? What circumstance has come between you and a friend or family member? With whom have you lost touch? Would a phone call or personal note now alleviate regrets in the future? Family ties can be broken so easily, but humility and a forgiving spirit can restore what was once thought ruined. Have you, like Esau, made a bad decision just to get even with someone? Was it worth the price? God can restore those relationships if you let Him. The choice is yours.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 27:1-40
What does it say?
When Rebekah overheard Isaac’s plan to bless Esau, she convinced Jacob to trick his father so that he could get the blessing instead.
What does it mean?
In Isaac’s older years, he decided it was time to give the blessing of the firstborn to Esau. Esau was happy to oblige Isaac’s request to hunt and prepare a meal for his father before receiving his blessing. Rebekah, who obviously favored Jacob, came up with a plan to manipulate the situation and deceive her husband. Worse still, she involved her son in the devious plan. Isaac was tricked, and Jacob received the blessing. Esau was enraged when he learned of Jacob’s deception.
How should I respond?
Just about every one of us has had a situation come up in which we have twisted something so the outcome would be in our favor. It is our sinful, human nature. When, if ever, is deception ever justified? Being honest and allowing things play out without manipulation requires trusting God to work things out according to His will and not our own. When have you been tempted to help God help you? At work? At school? Is there someone you need to make things right with because you were deceptive like Jacob? If so, ask God for the grace to make things right.

What does it say?
Isaac and Rebekah escaped a famine by going to Philistia. Two times God confirmed to Isaac the covenant promises that He had made to Abraham, his father.
What does it mean?
Isaac and Rebekah had to leave their home and journey to a place not devastated by the famine. God allowed Isaac to stay in the land of the Philistines. There God told Isaac that because of his father’s obedience, He would continue to be with him and bless him. God’s blessing was so evident to King Abimilech that the king made Isaac move because he was ‘much mightier’ than they were! Isaac moved down in the valley, and God continued to bless him there. God appeared to Isaac in Beersheba and told him again that He was with him and would bless him because of Abraham, his father. God’s presence was accompanied by His blessing, His provision, and His protection!
How should I respond?
Is God with you? If you have accepted Christ as Savior, know that Almighty God is with you! He is eager to bless—not to condemn and punish! What are your circumstances? What kind of famine are you fleeing? Are you spiritually dry? Emotionally famished? Physically weary? God is with you. How have you experienced His presence this week? For what specific provision and protection do you need to thank Him? Just as God was with Isaac and blessed him, He wants to bless you because you are His child.

What does it say?
Isaac and Rebekah had twin boys, Esau and Jacob. Years later, a famished Esau sold his better inheritance to Jacob for a bowl of stew.
What does it mean?
Isaac and Rebekah had been married twenty years before God blessed them with twins. Esau and Jacob were completely different. Esau was a hairy hunter while Jacob was a smooth-skinned homebody. After a long day of hunting, Esau came home to the delightful smell of stew simmering and couldn’t wait to dive into a bowl. Jacob, whose name means deceiver, took advantage of this opportunity and basically told his brother that it would cost him his birthright to get some dinner. Esau gave up his birthright to satisfy his temporary hunger.
How should I respond?
What captures your heart: the temporary or the eternal? What feeds your soul on Sunday: football or fellowship? It is easy to say, ‘Oh, I would never…,’ but how many times have you settled for a fleeting pleasure when God had a blessing waiting for you if you had just waited for His timing? What is your ‘bowl of stew’? Food? Alcohol? Wealth? Work? There are so many temptations Satan uses to lure us away from God’s best. Stand strong, friend! Nothing beats God’s best!

What does it say?
Abraham remarried and had six more sons. Before his death, Abraham gave gifts to his sons. He left everything he owned to Isaac.
What does it mean?
God allowed Abraham to witness many of His promises become reality. Upon Abraham’s death, Isaac and Ishmael came together to bury their father alongside Sarah in the portion of the Promised Land he rightfully owned. Abraham left great wealth; but it was his legacy of strong faith, carried to future generations, that has made the most impact.

What does it say?
Abraham commissioned his servant to find a bride for his son, Isaac.
What does it mean?
According to the customs of the day, it was Abraham’s job to find a suitable wife for his son, Isaac. He entrusted the task of locating a bride for Isaac to a servant whose conduct and faithfulness were already proven. The servant sought God’s direction by requesting details concerning the woman God had chosen for Isaac. Those prayers were answered as the servant talked with Rebekah. She consented not only to go with him, but to go at once. God confirmed His direction for Isaac’s marriage when he and Rebekah met.
How should I respond?
The person you choose to marry is one of the most important decisions you will make. Marriage should always be approached carefully with prayer for God’s direction and blessing. While our culture doesn’t utilize arranged marriages, the advice of godly parents can guide a child through this pivotal point in life in order to establish a strong home. Are you praying for your children’s future spouses? It’s never too early to start. Begin by asking God to place exactly whom He wants in each life and help them understand the importance God places on the decision. If you are single, how much time do you spend seeking God’s direction and godly counsel regarding the person you should marry? Strong marriages start with prayer.

What does it say?
After the death of his wife Sarah, Abraham negotiates the purchase of a cave for her burial.
What does it mean?
The small burial plot Abraham bought for his wife, Sarah, became the first piece of land he owned in Canaan, the land God had promised to give him over 77 years before. Abraham believed so completely in God’s ability to keep His promise that he acted as if it were already a reality. He firmly believed his descendants would own all of the land one day; therefore, he was determined to pay any price for Sarah to be buried in Canaan. Abraham’s actions backed up what he claimed to believe—that’s true faith.
How should I respond?
Faith claims what it cannot see, trusting God to supernaturally accomplish His plans. What promises of God are you claiming by faith? Every follower of Christ has the promise of His return and a future home in Heaven. Are you living as if Heaven were already your home? Or, have you been distracted by temporary trinkets and pleasures? When you live for God’s purposes, you store up treasure in Heaven (Matthew 6:19-21). How will you invest in eternal things today rather than temporal? Faith is proven by our actions, not our words.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 22
What does it say?
God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. After testing Abraham’s faith, God provided a substitute sacrifice and renewed His covenant with Abraham.
What does it mean?
God tested Abraham, not to tempt him to sin, but to prove his faith. It was not God’s intention for Isaac to actually be sacrificed; that would contradict God’s character and His promises to Abraham. Faith in God had taught Abraham not to argue with His instructions, but to trust and obey. He was confident that God was good and that His promises could not be broken. Abraham proved that he trusted God with the one thing he had waited for the longest – his son. Strong faith is often exercised with strong trials.
How should I respond?
Whatever is dearest to you on the earth is your Isaac. Are you willing to give that person or object by faith into God’s hands? Sometimes a prized possession or treasured relationship can become an idol, replacing God’s rightful position in our hearts. What is that earthly thing or person in your life today? Can you unreservedly release that to God? Faith is like a muscle that only becomes stronger when it’s exercised.

What does it say?
Abimelech’s servants had seized one of Abraham’s wells without Abimelech’s knowledge. The two men established the Treaty at Beersheba to settle the issue.
What does it mean?
Abimelech saw evidence of God’s hand on everything Abraham did. It was obvious that the promises of God to Abraham would be fulfilled. It was in Abimelech’s best interest to have a peaceful relationship with a person of Abraham’s standing and character, so he was honest about the ownership of the well and sought to settle the issue quickly. Both men chose to seek peace rather than additional conflict. Abraham’s gifts to Abimelech secured the well as his permanent possession, avoiding future disputes. When all was said and done, Abraham was not ashamed to publicly worship his God, Jehovah.
How should I respond?
When conflicts arise, you have a choice: fight the person or fight the problem. The more time you spend trying to prove that you’re right, the longer the conflict will linger. How do you handle issues within your family, at the office, or at school? If you are the first to offer solutions with kind, calm words, it can defuse the entire situation. With whom do you need to make peace? When there’s friction, does your response cause others to notice that your relationship with Christ is the most important aspect of your life?

What does it say?
Abraham planned a feast to celebrate the weaning of Isaac. When Ishmael mocked Isaac, Sarah became angry and demanded that Abraham order Hagar and Ishmael to leave.
What does it mean?
The arrival of Isaac was an occasion for both joy and heartache in Abraham’s household. His birth fulfilled God’s promise. However, years earlier Sarah had disregarded God’s perfect plan and had taken matters into her own hands. Ishmael was born but was not the chosen son. Isaac was. Radical twists and turns occurred once Sarah’s anger and jealousy surfaced. Banishment from Abraham’s camp required a fresh new perspective for Hagar and Ishmael. God was faithful. He met them in desolation and provided consolation.
How should I respond?
Circumstances in life can change abruptly and sometimes for the worse. It has been said that faith begins when man’s power ends and God’s power begins. Desperation draws us near to God to seek his wisdom and strength. What has changed in your life without warning? Where have you turned for help? Is there a trusted friend who will present a different perspective? Seeking God’s promises in Scripture and praying specifically will help guard your heart from becoming bitter. Like Hagar, you are not alone. God sees, hears and is beside you to help. Will you turn toward Him or away?

What does it say?
Sarah became pregnant when she was 90 years old—way past her days of fertility— just as God promised. Her laughter of doubt at God’s promise turned into laughter of joy.
What does it mean?
God keeps His promises even when the promises seem impossible. Who would have believed that a 90-year-old woman would be able to get pregnant and bear a child in her old age? Abraham and Sarah laughed at the idea when they first heard it. However, after Sarah gave birth to her own son, she named him Isaac, which means ‘laughter.’ Her laughter of doubt was turned into laughter of joy and thankfulness. Sarah came to realize that with God nothing is impossible. He made this seemingly impossible promise come true to demonstrate His power and faithfulness.
How should I respond?
Is there a promise God has made to you that you might consider laughing at because it sounds impossible? He has promised to forgive you for your sins if you confess them to Him (1 John 1:9). Does this sound too good to be true? He has also promised that you will not be tempted beyond what you are able to handle (1 Cor. 13:10). Is there an area of your life in which you feel pressure to give in or give up? Talk to God today about His promises. Ask Him for help in understanding and believing them. Trust God to turn your doubt into rejoicing and thankfulness for His promises.

What does it say?
Once again, Abraham instructed Sarah to say she was his sister, and Abimelech took her into his harem. God appeared to Abimelech to warn him of the outcome if he treated Sarah as a wife.
What does it mean?
Abraham seemed to have forgotten the lesson from his previous experience in Egypt when he was untruthful about his relationship with Sarah. Rather than learning from his past mistakes, he repeated the sin of deceit and once more caused Sarah’s virtue to be vulnerable. Abraham was blinded by his own fear rather than focused on Sarah’s safety. God protected her this time as well, but He allowed Abimelech to publicly reprimand Abraham, the future father of God’s people.
How should I respond?
Those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it! We’ve all had moments of repeated consequences because we did not learn our lesson the first time. What words or behavior from the past week do you need to avoid in the future? How did God act in mercy or use someone to correct you? Learning from mistakes requires an understanding of why you behaved that way in the first place. Did you act or speak out of fear, pride, or discouragement? Ask God for help with the underlying issue. Thank Him for the grace He has shown you and move on!

What does it say?
The wickedness in Sodom and Gomorrah finally resulted in God’s total destruction of those cities. After fleeing with their father, Lot’s daughters conspired to seduce him.
What does it mean?
The depth of evil in Sodom and Gomorrah demanded that a holy God intercede with judgment. Lot had gradually moved from living toward Sodom to being part of the city. Though Lot was a righteous man and grieved by ‘the lawless deeds he saw and heard’ (II Peter 2:7-8), his hesitation to leave and his wife’s backward glance are indications that they were far too comfortable living among the wicked. It was by the Lord’s mercy that the angels took the four of them by the hand and led them out to safety. The sordid manipulation of Lot by his daughters is clear evidence that they had embraced the thinking and lifestyle of the cities in which they had lived.
How should I respond?
You don’t have to look far to see evidence of depravity in our society. Moral values are almost a thing of the past. What sinful behavior grieves your heart? What worldly attitudes have you allowed to infiltrate your thinking so slowly that it’s hardly noticeable? Take a mental inventory of the entertainment choices and friends who influence your thoughts and behavior. You can’t impact the world if you’re isolated from it, but neither can you be an effective witness for Christ if you’ve grown accustomed to sin. Commit to read God’s Word every day, allowing Him to be the chief influence in your heart and mind. It’s not easy to stand alone, but God can enable you to live a holy life that draws others to Him.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 18
What does it say?
The Lord, along with two angels, appeared to Abraham in the form of men. He again foretold the birth of Isaac, as well as the fall of the wicked cities of the plains.
What does it mean?
As three men approached Abraham and Sarah’s home, Abraham recognized that these were not ordinary men but angels accompanying the Lord Himself. The Lord spoke to Abraham as a friend (James 2:23), telling him of the coming destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. With great humility and heartfelt emotion, Abraham entreated the Lord for the lives of the people living there. Abraham displayed boldness in asking God over and over to show leniency to the wicked in order to save the righteous. It is to Abraham’s credit that he desired mercy, rather than judgment, on those wicked cities.
How should I respond?
We like to talk about God’s love, but we rarely discuss God’s judgment on sin, which can fall at any time on any nation. Intercession for the world around you is the responsibility of every follower of Christ. What specific things are you praying about that could change the direction of your community and nation? Do you honestly desire God’s mercy for those who live contrary to His commands? How often do you pray that your neighbors, government leaders, and those in authority would repent and come to Christ? Start today. Be intentional. It might be your boldness that brings a community to Christ.

What does it say?
God gave new names to Abraham and Sarah, enlarged His promises, and established the sign of the covenant—circumcision.
What does it mean?
Changing Abram and Sarai’s names to Abraham (‘father of many’) and Sarah (‘princess’), reinforced the fact that God would keep his long-awaited promise of a family. Their new names symbolized a new identity in Him and a future that rested in God’s hands. Circumcision would be the sign of God’s covenant with Abraham and Isaac, the son of promise, setting apart God’s chosen people from the others in the land. Abraham demonstrated his faith in all God told him by immediately and fully obeying.
How should I respond?
As a believer, you also have a new identity – ‘child of God.’ That identity gives you a new future in Christ and entitles you to the promises God has made to all who call Him, ‘Father’ (Galatians 3:14). God’s promises in the New Testament are His new covenant with you through Jesus Christ. That covenant is sealed through the circumcision of your heart—symbolic of the change made in your life by accepting Jesus as Lord (2 Cor. 5:17). How is your identity in Christ evident to those around you? Your obedience to God’s Word demonstrates your faith in His promises.

What does it say?
Sarai urged Abram to have a child by her handmaiden, Hagar. The resulting conflict caused Hagar to flee to the desert where God comforted her before sending her back.
What does it mean?
Sarai’s grief at remaining barren caused her to take matters into her own hands. Fathering a child by a wife’s handmaiden was a common practice, but it was not how God intended to fulfill His promise to Abram. Sarai’s desire to control the situation, as well as Abram’s conceding, resulted in strife and discord in their home. But God didn’t simply remove Hagar and continue with His plan. The Lord’s care for her in the wilderness demonstrated that He saw her, knew her situation, and loved her. Abram and Sarai would have to live with the consequences of their choice.
How should I respond?
We love to be in control, trusting our own logic and common sense to solve issues in which we can’t see God at work. In what situation are you about to take matters into your own hands, like Sarai? But taking control also means taking the consequences of your actions. Being impatient can cause even more difficulties than you’re dealing with at the present time. Are you, like Hagar, going through a wilderness experience? Have you been driven to a place of hopelessness? As a believer, Christ has promised to never leave you. He sees you and wants to comfort you right now—where you are.

What does it say?
God understood when Abram expressed disappointment that he remained childless. The Lord again restated His will and covenant. He also foretold what the years would bring to the future nation.
What does it mean?
Abram and Sarai were distressed about their childless state. God reminded Abram that He was all he needed, but Abram’s response showed his discouragement that the promise of a child from God had not been fulfilled. As Abram poured out his distress, God re-affirmed His covenant, showing His constant care for Abram’s concerns and needs. God caused Abram to fall into a deep sleep, during which he had a vision of the future nation that would come from his offspring. God will fulfill His promise in His time.
How should I respond?
What are you currently waiting on God for? Has it been so long that it seems God has forgotten you? It is easy to think He has answered, ‘No’ when He may be saying, ‘Wait.’ During those times, being patient for God’s answer increases your faith. Like Abram, tell God exactly how you feel. He cares for you enormously and wants to meet your needs in His way and in His time. A deeper knowledge of His Word will always encourage you. Make a list of the verses that admonish you to ‘wait on the Lord’ and memorize them. He never changes, and His promises are true and constant. Continue to trust that God is working out His timeline in your circumstances. He will never fail you.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 14
What does it say?
When Sodom was attacked, Abram left immediately to free Lot and the captives.
What does it mean?
Lot had moved from living “toward” the sinful city of Sodom to living in it as a resident. When Sodom came under attack, he and his neighbors were taken prisoner in battle. Abram gathered his servants and allies and successfully rescued all the captives. The king of Sodom desired to reward Abram, who declined the overture, desiring that only God get credit for his wealth. He wanted nothing to do with anything from that wicked city. Instead of accepting riches, Abram paid homage to Melchizedek, introduced in this chapter as a priest of the Most High God.
How should I respond?
Like Lot, it’s impossible for a believer to live close to “the world” without eventually suffering for it. Who in your family or circle of friends is in some type of captivity due to a sinful habit or lifestyle? Are you willing to come to their aid? Ask God for the wisdom and strength to face the challenge. What about you? What temptations inch you closer and closer to thoughts and actions that displease the Lord? It’s impossible to tip-toe around the edge of sin without eventually falling in. Like Abram, keeping the proper distance will give you the proper perspective.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 13
What does it say?
Abram began the journey back to Bethel as soon as the famine ended. Recurring strife between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot made a parting of ways necessary.
What does it mean?
Abram had grown very rich in Egypt, and now the large herds of Abram and Lot were too much for that area of Canaan. Abram generously and unselfishly gave his younger kinsman first choice of the land, showing his desire for restoring the strained relationship. Lot saw the fertile area around Sodom and selected what seemed the best soil without taking into account the wickedness of the people. Abram continued traveling to Hebron, again building an altar of worship where God re-affirmed His covenant.
How should I respond?
Often, loving your neighbor and family requires sacrifice. In fact, we’re often more generous with acquaintances than with the people we live with! With whom in your family do you have a strained relationship? What opportunity will you have this week to put their needs before your own? When you do, you are fulfilling the second most important commandment in Scripture (Matthew 22:37-40). Will you, like Abram, trust God enough to give up what seems to be “the best”? Keeping the peace may require some sacrifice on your part, but your actions will honor God before your entire family.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 12:10-20
What does it say?
Canaan suffered a severe drought and famine. Abram temporarily relocated to Egypt, but his fear of being killed caused him to ask Sarai to say she was his sister, not his wife.
What does it mean?
Abram believed only drastic action would save his family and chose to go to Egypt until the famine in Canaan ended. However, Abram gave in to fear and asked his wife to participate in a half-truth. Sarai was his father’s daughter (Gen. 20:12) but not his mother’s. She was both his wife and half-sister. Abram’s uncharacteristic deception left both Sarai and the Egyptians open to sin and taught his family that deceit is acceptable. His actions also demonstrated a lack of trust in God to protect him. God Himself was a defense for Sarai in this situation—He kept her safe. It was only God’s grace that caused this episode to end well.
How should I respond?
Since childhood we’ve all been told that honesty is the best policy. If you’re a parent, you teach and expect honesty in your children. But, like Abram, we all have moments when fear, selfishness, or convenience tempts us to be less than completely honest. A half-truth might technically be correct; but if the objective is to mislead someone, then you’re practicing deception. In what situation do you need to relinquish control and trust God for the outcome? Has your family learned to trust or to doubt God by watching your example? Remember, a half-truth is a whole lie.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 11:27-12:9
What does it say?
When Abram was seventy-five years of age, God called him from his father’s people, telling him to leave the idolatrous land of his birth and journey to a land God would show him.
What does it mean?
God chose Abram to be the recipient of an extraordinary covenant. He promised Abram that he would be the father of a great nation, with blessings not only for himself but for all the families of the earth. Abram’s trust in God was so great that he did not question but immediately obeyed God’s command to travel as God led him. With his wife, servants, and possessions, he eventually came to the land God had selected. In that place Abram built an altar of worship, witnessing to the people of the land that his faith was in an unseen God.
How should I respond?
Obedience to God’s call often means stepping out in faith. If God were to call you to a new destination, job, or school, would you be willing to leave extended family or friends, following as He directs? What are some emotions you might feel? Can you tell God sincerely that you want only His will for your life? He has plans for you that you may be unaware of. If your desire is for God’s blessing on your life, obey and follow wherever He leads. He has someone in that place in need of your witness for Christ.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 11:1-9
What does it say?
Because of their rebellion and disobedience, God confused the people’s language and scattered them around the earth.
What does it mean?
It didn’t take long after the flood for mankind to once again rebel against God. At this time, all the people on earth spoke the same language, allowing them to become unified in thoughts and actions. God knew that it was this unity coupled with man’s sinful nature that gave them power to rebel against Him. Building the Tower of Babel was an attempt to reach Heaven and establish a name for themselves as a powerful nation apart from the Lord. But defying God always has consequences. He confused their language so that they could no longer understand each other and separated them to put a stop to their rebellion.
How should I respond?
Our society is full of people who want to be famous just for the sake of being famous. Their biggest goal is simply to be known. Pride and human nature are always self-promoting. Is your chief desire to build a name for yourself or to glorify the name of God? He promises to elevate those who humble themselves under Him (1 Peter 5:6.) In what ways have you defied God by seeking your own interests? What were the consequences? In order to have a proper relationship with God, it is essential to accept His authority over your life. As God, it is His right to deal with defiance justly and appropriately. Today, how will you set aside your desire to be known and determine to elevate God instead?

What does it say?
Ham told his brothers that their father was drunk and uncovered in his tent. When Noah woke, he cursed Ham’s descendants; but Shem and Japheth received blessings.
What does it mean?
Rather than showing respect and discretion, Ham thought seeing his father naked was a joke, revealing his true character and setting up a pattern of bad behavior that continued through his descendants. (Ham
's descendants, Canaanites, Ninevites and Amorites, were all enemies of God’s people.) Shem and Japheth acted respectfully by walking backward to avoid seeing their father and covered him with a robe. Their descendants reflected the benefits of respectful behavior and attitude. From Shem would come Abraham (‘friend of God’– James 2:23), Isaac, Jacob, and eventually Christ. How should I respond?
Like father, like son. Like mother, like daughter. Like it or not, how our kids think and behave is more caught than taught. What ungodly attitude have you displayed this week? If your family has been affected negatively by a choice of yours, how can you change things going forward? Is there someone you should thank for keeping your family in check spiritually? Our thoughts and actions today become the legacy we leave for future generations. At some point, we will all be a name on a family tree. Will your impact lead your great-grandchildren to be friends or enemies of God?

What does it say?
Noah and his family left the ark when the waters receded. God then made a covenant with Noah and his descendants. He promised that He would never again destroy the earth with a flood.
What does it mean?
Noah’s family took care of the animals on the ark for over a year. As glad as Noah probably was that his time in the ark was completed, he didn’t forget that it was God who saved them from the flood and kept them safe. He worshiped God immediately when he was on dry land again. Noah recognized God’s faithfulness to his family through the judgment imposed by the flood. God’s covenant promise, symbolized by the rainbow, is a constant reminder of His faithfulness.
How should I respond?
God often allows difficult situations to go on much longer than we like or feel comfortable with. However, those are the very things that shape our character and affect our decisions. How you respond during the storms of life will largely determine who you become when they are over. What particular storm are you weathering just now? You can always trust that God still loves you and that you’re not going through it alone. Do you recognize God’s faithfulness in the midst of the problem? How has He provided and protected? Like Noah, don’t move on today until you thank and worship Him for what He’s done and Who He is.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 7
What does it say?
God carried out His plan to destroy the earth and everything in it with a flood.
What does it mean?
Noah spent 120 years building the ark without seeing any evidence of rain. Year after year he worked diligently—believing that God was going to do what He said He would do. For 120 years everyone around him continued to rebel against God and ignore His warning. The time it took to construct the ark gave ample time for repentance, yet not one person did repent. God’s judgment came as promised. His very nature cannot allow sin to continue unchecked. While Noah and his family were inside the ark, protected from God’s wrath, everyone outside perished.
How should I respond?
Can you imagine being the only family in the entire world who lived faithful and godly lives? Our society moves further away from the teaching of Scripture every day. It of- ten seems as if sin is rampant and God is absent. But He has not changed; no matter how long it takes, we can trust that Jesus will fulfill his promise to return and judge the world. What choice have you made? Have you chosen to believe God and His Word, or are you taking your chances outside of Christ? God has given ample time to turn to Him in repentance. His judgment may not always be immediate, but it is always certain.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 5-6
What does it say?
God saw the corruption of man and gave Noah instructions for building an ark to save his family from God’s judgment.
What does it mean?
Through the six generations between Adam and Noah, man became increasingly corrupt. Noah and his family, however, would be spared from God’s judgment on the world because he was ‘a righteous man’ and ‘walked faithfully with God.’ That faithfulness was tested when God commanded Noah to build an ark in preparation for a flood that would destroy everything and everyone on the earth. At five hundred years old, surrounded by corruption and unbelief, Noah obeyed immediately and without question.
How should I respond?
When God looks at your life, does he see faithfulness or corruption? If you lived in the time of Noah, do you think you would have been spared? Faithfulness and obedience all the time and in every way is difficult—especially when you are unable to see or understand all God is doing. What has God asked you to do that requires extreme faith? What has been your response? Each day you have an opportunity to respond to God in faith, trust, and obedience. What you do reveals much more about your faith than what you say.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 4
What does it say?
Adam and Eve had two children, Cain and Abel. Cain killed his brother Abel.
What does it mean?
The story of Cain and Abel is the first recorded event that shows the effect of sin in the world. Hebrews 11:4 tells us that ‘By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain.’ Cain’s prideful attitude led to anger toward God and jealousy toward his brother when his offering was rejected. Abel’s murder was the first taking of human life, the first spilling of human blood as a result of a person’s sin. When questioned by God, Cain continued this sinful cycle with lies and indifference.
How should I respond?
As sinful people living in a sinful world, we are plagued with feelings of anger, jealousy, deceit, indifference, and hatred. You may not commit murder, but wrong thoughts and emotions lead to wrong actions. Are you experiencing negative feelings toward God, a family member, co-worker, or fellow student? Be honest with God about how you feel — He knows anyway! Ask Him to reveal the underlying issue, such as pride or bitterness, and determine to rely solely on Him as you work through it. If your attitudes and emotions are not controlled by God, they will end up controlling you.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 3
What does it say?
Sin entered the world through the disobedience of Adam and Eve.
What does it mean?
Because of their disobedience, Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden, and their lives became very different from what God intended. The serpent enticed Eve to disobey God by appealing to her sense of pride. The passage doesn’t record any objection from Adam as he joined her defiant action. Although they offered excuses, the guilt of their choice was on them. The consequences of their disobedience included pain in childbirth, toil in work, and eventual physical death for them as well as for all future generations. Even the earth responded to the presence of sin by producing thorns and thistles. One sinful act had devastating consequences on life and the world.
How should I respond?
Why do bad things happen in the world? When Adam and Eve chose to disobey, sin entered the world; and their lives, as well as ours, were forever changed. The existence of sin means our world is now full of terrible things that God never meant for us to experience. We, too, choose daily between obedience and disobedience. No matter what excuses you make, if you choose to sin, it will always affect your life negatively. In what way might you be defying God’s instructions? What consequences can you avoid today by choosing to obey?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 2
What does it say?
After six days of creation, God established a day of rest. A detailed account is then given regarding the creation of man, woman, and the Garden of Eden.
What does it mean?
Food, companionship and rest have been part of basic human needs since the cre- ation of the world. God placed Adam in the garden with ample food to sustain him and satisfied his need for companionship by creating a woman and instituting marriage. Upon completion of creation, God set an example for them of rest on the seventh day. But God also included boundaries and work as part of His perfect order. Adam was given the task of caring for the plants and animals. Along with this responsibility, God set a boundary in His command: ‘Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat.’
How should I respond?
Because He created us, God knows exactly what we need. Many of us rarely forget to eat, but how well are you functioning within God’s design for rest, marriage, and work? Start by regularly setting aside a day to rest, focusing on God and the spiritual needs in your life and home. When you return to the work week, recognize it as a means of purpose and provision. But God has also given us boundaries for our protection. Which one are you dangerously close to crossing? What changes do you need to make in your life to honor God’s original plan for living?

In six days God created the heavens, the world, and everything in it. He created man and woman in His own image, giving them the earth to fill and rule.
What does it mean?
God is so powerful that He spoke the world into existence from complete emptiness. On the sixth day, He created man and woman in His own image, making fellowship with Him and worship of Him possible. He placed them in a garden that offered everything they would ever need. Additionally, God gave them authority over His earthly creation. Along with this authority came the responsibility to take care of all that He had provided. When God looked at the man and woman, surrounded by everything He had created, He said it was, ‘very good.’
How should I respond?
What parts of creation have you taken time to appreciate this week: a sunrise, a mountain view, or the taste of a favorite food? God intentionally designed the world for your enjoyment and provision. From the beginning, God loved you immeasurably. You are His masterpiece, designed to have a relationship with your Creator. How does viewing yourself and others in the image of God encourage you to share His love with them? Slow down today, and thank God for how He designed you and the world around you. This week, how can you be a better steward of everything He has provided?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 148-150
What does it say?
The psalmist invites everything that has breath to sing praise to the Lord for His creation, His compassion, His powerful acts, and supreme greatness.
What does it mean?
What a magnificent closing to the praise and prayer concert of the Scriptures! The first psalm begins with God’s blessing on the man who meditates on His Word. The last psalm ends with man and “everything that has breath” praising the Lord. At times praising God can be quiet and reflective. However, the last three psalms invite all creation to join in a worship service to praise their Creator. Those who know God have special reason to sing a new song of praise to the Lord – a song of salvation. He is the One who has washed their sins away and punished their enemies. It is right to praise God in every place, in every situation, and with every breath.
How should I respond?
How do you start and end your day? Do you wake up filled with dread as you think about the day’s events, or do you remember, “This is the day the Lord has made – let us rejoice and be glad in it”? God loves to hear your praises as you gather with others to worship, but He also finds great pleasure when your praise matches the choices you make and the way you live. Try aligning your day to the structure of the Psalms. Begin the day meditating on God’s wisdom in Scripture; let your actions throughout the day be an expression of how much you love Him, and end the day showing appreciation for who God is and giving thanks for what He has done. Will you join with all creation in praise to the Lord for His greatness? Will you thank Him right now for providing for your salvation? Determine to praise the Lord in each situation you face with every breath you have until your dying day. It will energize you physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 146-147
What does it say?
The psalmist would praise and trust the Lord all of his life because His faithfulness endures. He challenged Israel to praise God for His revealed laws and Word.
What does it mean?
It’s generally thought that the last five psalms were written when the second temple was completed, and the walls of Jerusalem had been rebuilt. That’s a fitting explanation for why these psalms begin with the same three words, “Praise the Lord.” During Israel’s captivity and return, the writer had learned to place his hope in God instead of in people. Only the Creator of Heaven and Earth sustains the troubled, lifts up those who are humbled, and heals the brokenhearted. He will not fail those who put their trust in Him. Israel had special cause to praise the Lord; no other nation had the revelation of God’s wisdom and person through His laws and decrees. It was fitting to praise Him.
How should I respond?
What challenges are you facing right now? Whom do you trust for the answers? God can be trusted to provide what you need when you spend time in His Word and in prayer. If you’re worried, you can turn to Him for peace. If you are lonely, you can turn to Him for friendship. If your heart is broken, you can turn to Him for healing. If you feel powerless, you can turn to Him for strength. You can even thank and praise Him before the answers come because God is forever faithful to those who choose to hope in Him.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 22
What does it say?
John continued his description of the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, with the river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb.
What does it mean?
John’s vision in the final chapter of Revelation paints a picture of God’s impending victory. Believers through the ages are participants in God’s incredible story – a story of redemption for whoever wishes to accept the free gift of the water of life. The Spirit of God and His bride, the church, invite all to come to Christ. The Lord Jesus promises that each one will be rewarded according to what he has done. His followers eagerly wait for the return of the victorious King, the Lamb of God who testifies, “I am coming soon.”
How should I respond?
What thoughts immediately come to mind when you read about Christ’s return? Are you ready, or are you overly focused on your own plans here and now? Jesus’ imminent return should propel us to be more mature in our faith with each passing day. Take a spiritual inventory to prepare for the coming year. What spiritual fruit would you like to experience in your life this year? Determine what must take place in order to get there. Take time in the new year to pray – asking God for the wisdom and strength to make those changes. Will you commit now to live this year in expectation of Christ’s return?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 21
What does it say?
God will create a new Heaven and a new Earth and eradicate pain and sorrow. He will make His dwelling place with mankind once again.
What does it mean?
God was there when the world began, and He will be there at the end. Soon after creation, Satan successfully introduced sin into the human race, and holy God departed from His dwelling place with His creation. Paradise was lost! Through pain and sorrow, mankind was forbidden to access the tree of life. But Satan’s success is only temporary. In Revelation 21, we see the end of the story. Satan is defeated, sin is banished, and God will return to dwell with mankind. Death, pain, and sorrow will be conquered forever. Fellowship with God will be restored – paradise regained!
How should I respond?
Have you ever wondered what living in the Garden of Eden would have been like? When sin entered the world, so did all kinds of heartache and pain. We can get so preoccupied with our earthly problems that we forget God has a magnificent plan for our eternal future – no more death, no more tears, no more pain! Until then, He intends for us to experience the abundant life He has planned for us right now. Are you missing out on the fullness of God’s wonderful plan for you today? The sorrows of life are certain, but remember that they are also temporary.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 20
What does it say?
Jesus will rule on the earth for one thousand years, and then Satan will be cast into Hell and vanquished for eternity. The Great White Throne Judgment will then take place.
What does it mean?
During Christ’s thousand-year reign, Satan will be imprisoned, unable to have any influence on the earth, while those who were martyred during the Tribulation will be raised from the dead to reign with Christ. When Satan is released after the Millennium, he will deceive the nations to attack Jerusalem. But the Lord will protect the city and devour Satan and his forces. John then saw Christ at the Great White Throne Judgment. Those whose names are written in the Book of Life will be eternally saved, but those whose names were written only in the various books recording their deeds on the earth will be judged and cast into the lake of fire.
How should I respond?
It is only by God’s grace that your name can be written in the Book of Life. Christianity is the only message that doesn’t tell you to work your way to God. Instead, God Himself took your place and paid the penalty for your sinful state so you could be covered by His perfect righteousness. Our good deeds and works will not be enough to save us from eternal judgment. As a believer, your good works are the result of the Holy Spirit’s work inside of you. They are evidence of salvation, not a means to it. Have you placed your faith in the gracious gift of Christ’s sacrifice? Is your name recorded in the Book of Life?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 19
What does it say?
When Jesus returns to the earth to defeat his enemies, there is a great celebration in Heaven.
What does it mean?
Today’s passage lays out the final outcome for the righteous and for the ungodly. The faithful will be united with Christ followed by a celebration, praising God both for His defeat of the religious system that had corrupted the world and for the marriage of Christ and His bride, the saints. On Palm Sunday Jesus rode humbly into Jerusalem on a donkey, but He will return as the majestic King of the earth. The saints will be adorned in the cleanest and whitest of linens to signify their purity. Their righteousness is not their own – but the righteousness of Christ given to them by God Himself.
How should I respond?
Do you get upset when you find out the ending to a story before finishing a book? Knowing the victorious ending to God’s story in human history gives us the ability to have an unwavering hope and anticipation for what is to come. Yet we cannot wrap our minds around the significance of what it means to be truly clothed in His righteousness. Are you counting on your own good deeds to get into Heaven? Our righteous acts “are like filthy rags” in God’s sight (Isaiah 64:6). It’s only by accepting Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross that you’re covered in His righteousness. Are you dressed for the wedding?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 145
What does it say?
David proclaims the magnitude of God’s goodness and generosity.
What does it mean?
The true nature of God’s greatness was beyond David’s finite understanding, so he praised what he knew of the Lord’s works and characteristics from his own life experiences. His knowledge of God’s grace, compassion, and love were gained through times of heartbreaking difficulty and agonizing repentance of sin. He could speak firsthand of God’s provision and faithfulness from countless days on the run for his life. The Lord had been right there, watching over David through every sleepless night and in every cry for help. Everything God had done or allowed in David’s life was loving and right. David had a close personal relationship with God and had reason to praise Him personally, but he didn’t stop there. God’s greatness deserved to be praised by all men through every generation; so David wrote this psalm of praise so that the Lord’s majesty, goodness, righteousness, and holiness would be praised forever and ever.
How should I respond?
For the child of God every circumstance and experience serves one purpose: to know the Lord and to make Him known. Through King David’s words of praise we learn God’s qualities and how He interacts with people in light of those characteristics. As we follow Christ and grow to know Him better, we, in turn, should tell others how His love, grace, and goodness have been shown to us. The charge to each generation of believers is to know the Lord intimately and praise Him openly. How will you make Him known today?
24-Dec-25
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 144
What does it say?
David praised the Lord as his Rock and asked God to scatter his enemies. The people whose God is the Lord are blessed.
What does it mean?
David was a man of war throughout his life. From past encounters with the wild predators that attacked his father’s flocks to his defeat of Goliath and all the enemy armies of Israel, he realized that victory had come from God, preparing him, strengthening him, and delivering him. His awe of the fact that the God of the universe would care about him and his problems caused his worship to be elevated to a new level. David envisioned a time of peace that could come only as a result of God’s blessing, love, and mighty power.
How should I respond?
Has your life been touched by war, illness, or death? Perhaps you’ve had a cycle of job loss, moves, or difficulties with children. David reminds us that God is interested in the details of our lives and intervenes on our behalf. Can you trace how He’s reached down to lift you back up time and time again? How has the Lord used something from your past to prepare you to handle today’s challenges? Spend a few minutes thanking the Lord for how He has helped you and ask Him for guidance for your future. Place your trust in the Creator of the universe, and your life will be marked by His grace, power, and love. Troubles may repeat themselves, but so does God’s faithfulness.
23-Dec-25
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 18
What does it say?
John saw an angel announcing that God will destroy Babylon for its many sins.
What does it mean?
The city of Babylon described by John is representative of the most influential political and commercial system of the world. God will bring destruction to this city for a number of reasons. It is a place filled with demonic activity, immorality, materialism, pride, deception, and slavery. God will command His people to evacuate before He destroys the city. Believers will be spared and rejoice with gratitude and praise. The unsaved, however, will be in despair when they lose all of their material belongings.
How should I respond?
Materialism is one of the biggest hindrances to having an eternal perspective and a true sense of your identity. While material success is not innately harmful, it can feed pride and cause insecurity if you look to it for fulfillment and self-worth. God created you in His image, giving you dignity and worth – nothing is more valuable than that. When your focus is on what the world has to offer, you miss out on God’s plans for you. God wants to develop Christ’s character in you and give you fulfilling work to do. If you look at the world from God’s perspective, material things hold less value and significance. What do you look to for a sense of identity? Will your perspective be temporal or eternal today?
22-Dec-25
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 17
What does it say?
John saw a mysterious woman riding a beast with seven heads and ten horns.
What does it mean?
John used strong, metaphorical language to describe this disturbing vision. The woman represents a wicked religious system that will align itself with a godless political system. This corrupt and materialistic “church” will blaspheme the one true God and take the lives of many believers. The kings and kingdoms with which she associates will end up destroying her, but ultimate victory belongs to Jesus. As the Lamb of God, He has the ability to atone for sin. As the King of kings, He has the power to overcome His enemies. And as the Lord of lords, He is the only One worthy to be worshipped.
How should I respond?
Americans don’t have the most realistic perspective on what comprises the title “king.” We know what we read in history books and fairy tales, but we have never personally been under the authority of a human king. Does your worship of God reflect an awareness of His great majesty and power? What areas of your life are you trying to control instead of submitting to Him as Lord and King? Take a moment and reflect on the glorious characteristics of God as King, and ask Him to help you surrender the things in your life that keep you from worshipping Him alone.
21-Dec-25
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 16
What does it say?
John saw a vision of seven angels pouring out seven vials of God’s final judgment over the earth.
What does it mean?
In this passage, we see God’s judgment being poured out in the form of seven different plagues: sores, the turning of water to blood, scorching heat, darkness, the drying up of the Euphrates River, earthquakes, and hail storms. Even after each of these judgments, the people remain unrepentant and unresponsive to God’s “final call.”
How should I respond?
Horrific events and tragedy exist as an unfortunate part of our fallen world. Life holds disasters – both natural and unnatural – that sometimes turn our lives upside down. In those moments, you have the choice of turning to God or turning away from Him. You can either rely on His character and His promise that He will always be with you, or you can turn away from Him in rebellion with no hope of peace. It’s often easy to point fingers at God when tragedy strikes and blame Him for the evil that we see happening in the world. However, we must remember that it is man who is tainted by evil, not God. When disasters and times of brokenness enter your life, ask God to make His presence known to you and to use the trial to bring you into a more intimate relationship with Him.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 15
What does it say?
John saw seven angels prepare to place seven more judgments on the earth. He heard songs of praise to God being sung by those who were victorious over the Antichrist.
What does it mean?
The seven bowls of wrath poured out by the angels represent God’s final judgment on the earth. John’s vision then changes to a host of people standing on a sea of fire and glass singing praises to God, not just about what He has done, but about who He is. Their song is filled with words of honor, praising God for His justice, eternality, holiness, and righteousness. The temple, beaming with the glory of God and radiating with His power, is opened and seven angels come out. Each angel is given a bowl of God’s wrath to pour out over the earth. No one was allowed into the temple until the plagues of the seven angels were completed.
How should I respond?
Have you ever experienced God in such a significant way that you were literally speechless? Our conversations about God tend to focus on what He’s done for us rather than on who He is. Take a moment to focus your thoughts on the glory of God. Read back over today’s passage and spend a moment praising Him for the characteristics that reveal Him as God. He is holy. He is just. He is unchanging. He is righteous. He is faithful. He is King. How do His qualities change your perspective today?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 14
What does it say?
John saw a vision of those who will be redeemed singing praise to God. He saw a preview of the day Christ will return to the earth to bring final defeat to all of His enemies.
What does it mean?
The two groups of people in this passage are distinguished by the marks on their foreheads, displaying their allegiance to either Christ or the Antichrist. The ones standing with Jesus on Mount Zion are the 144,000 sealed saints of God that will come through the Great Tribulation and be presented to God as a righteous harvest, a special gift to God. But anyone with the mark of the beast will be ripe for harvest – under the full wrath of God for their rejection of truth and of Jesus Christ.
How should I respond?
We don’t hesitate to show our allegiance to our favorite sports teams by proudly displaying their logo on a shirt, hat, or bumper sticker. Yet we often shy away from things that would identify us to the world as Christians. As time goes on, those of us who profess faith in Jesus will pay a heavier price in this life for our allegiance to Christ. There will come a time when anyone who follows Jesus will be clearly identified from those who do not. The time of His return is drawing near. How willing are you to boldly proclaim your faith in Jesus Christ today?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 142-143
What does it say?
Overwhelmed, alone, and crushed by his enemies, David prayed for victory, guidance, and a heart that pleased God.
What does it mean?
Although these psalms were written at different points in David’s life, he was facing a familiar problem. In Psalm 142 Saul was trying to kill David, while in Psalm 143 it was his own son Absalom who threatened his life. During both times his overwhelming feelings of desperation, weakness, and hopelessness made these prayers very similar – until a major difference emerges in 143:5. God’s faithfulness in the first situation gave David confidence in God’s goodness and unfailing love in his present circumstance. David’s outlook changed when he remembered how the Lord had delivered previously. He not only envisioned what God could do for him – he had experienced it before.
How should I respond?
Every challenge you face offers an opportunity to learn more about who God is and how He acts on behalf of those who trust Him. What current situation in your life has left you feeling overwhelmed or defeated? If you’re a mature believer, look back on other situations that seemed hopeless. How did the Lord strengthen you through those struggles? If you’re a relatively new Christian, ask God to open your eyes so you can see how much He loves you. Today, remember that God specializes in turning hopeless situations into amazing opportunities to showcase His goodness, wisdom, and power.
17-Dec-25
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 140-141
What does it say?
David talked with God about the dangers he faced at the hands of his enemies and conveyed his desire to avoid evil deeds.
What does it mean?
David made two major decisions in facing his enemies. First, he trusted God to intervene and take care of those who mistreated him. Turning to God allowed David to release the emotions he was experiencing and depend on God to act. Secondly, David took his eyes off his circumstances and focused them firmly on his God. He wanted to respond in the right way and recognized the need for God to enable him to do so. He sought God’s help to protect his heart from desiring to do wrong things or joining forces with the wrong people.
How should I respond?
It’s so easy to respond in the wrong way when faced with difficult people. But God has not changed; He can still be trusted to intervene in your life when people mistreat you. How will you respond when people treat you unfairly? Will you seek revenge or turn to God? Will you join them in rebelling against His Word, or will you commit to complete obedience to Christ? If you choose to keep your focus on God, then you will be able to respond as David did. Ask God right now to protect your thoughts and desires as you interact with the people who come across your path today.
16-Dec-25
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 13
What does it say?
John saw a vision of two beasts coming up from the sea and from the earth. The first beast blasphemed God, and the other beast made all people worship the first.
What does it mean?
Satan will elevate and empower two leaders to deter as many people as possible from a relationship with God. These leaders are understood to be the Antichrist and the False Prophet. The Antichrist will have a great deal of influence in the world and will be viewed as an intellectual, political, and religious leader by most people. The False Prophet will set out to ensure that the Antichrist is worshipped as God. While it is unknown who these men will be, one thing is certain – Satan will use them to persecute believers and manipulate people all over the world through political, economic and religious power.
How should I respond?
The religious climate in our society has steadily decreased over recent decades, leaving little resemblance to “one nation, under God.” The stage is being set for the world to embrace the Antichrist, although Scripture warns us that his spirit is already at work in the world (1 John 4:1-3). The spirit of antichrist rejects the truth of God’s Word and Jesus as God’s Son. How might you have been influenced by ungodly views on money, power, or religion? How much time do you spend studying the truths of God so you can detect error? Satan can’t take your salvation, but he can distract you from God’s Word, God’s work, and God’s people.
15-Dec-25
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 12
What does it say?
Satan has temporary reign on the earth, but God has defeated him and his influence.
What does it mean?
There are several points to notice about Satan in this passage. First, he is a vicious murderer and the deceiver of the world – a role he has taken on since his appearance as a serpent in the Garden of Eden. Even in Heaven, he deceived a certain percentage of the angels who were cast out of God’s presence with him when they decided to rebel against God. There is no question that Satan is regarded as a malicious enemy who hates both God and God’s people. However, the Lord has pronounced protection of His children and ultimate victory over the enemy.
How should I respond?
We can take great comfort in knowing that God has already defeated Satan at the Cross, freeing believers from the penalty and power of sin. But we must not be naïve to the presence and influence of sin that will remain until we reach Heaven. It takes only a quick glance at the headlines to understand the very real presence of evil in the world. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6 that we “wrestle against the spiritual forces of evil” and stresses the necessity of putting on the armor of God as protection. You don’t need to fear the schemes of the devil, but be mindful of utilizing the spiritual armor God has given you. What influence of the enemy do you need to combat in your life today?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 11
What does it say?
John measured the temple and then saw the two witnesses of God giving testimony and carrying out their ministry before being murdered. The seventh trumpet is blown.
What does it mean?
Revelation 11 pictures the willful rejection of God’s continuing call for repentance and the utter hatred of the lost for all that is godly. Even though the world will try to silence God’s witnesses, His message will keep coming through – loud and clear. Judgment has finally come, and no one will be able to hide any longer. It may appear that evil has won when the two witnesses are killed for testifying to the truth, but their resurrections will be a testimony to their faithfulness and to God’s power. Christ will be declared King over all things and worshipped as the Lord God Almighty.
How should I respond?
If you stand for the truth of God’s Word, someone will reject you and may even persecute you. As ominous as that is, our job is not self-preservation but gospel presentation. Have you allowed fear of rejection to stand in the way of sharing the Gospel of Jesus? The urgent need to tell others about Christ has been our recurring theme throughout the Book of Revelation. With whom is God prompting you to share your own salvation story? There is no reason to fear – we serve the victorious One who will reign forever and ever!
13-Dec-25
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 10
What does it say?
John saw a mighty angel and heard the voices of seven thunders, but he was told not to record their words. He was given a sweet scroll to eat, but it was sour in his stomach.
What does it mean?
Recent chapters have detailed how devastating the Great Tribulation will be on the earth and its inhabitants. Yet the full extent of God’s judgment is unknown because John was prevented from writing down all of the things he heard the angel and the thundering voices speak. Similarly, the contents of the small book are unknown, but God wanted John to internalize His message regarding how end time events will play out. At the appointed time, Christ’s return will no longer be delayed, and evil on the earth will come to an end. While the message of God’s grace is sweet, the end result for many will be bitter.
How should I respond?
Nothing is sweeter than the story of God’s love for the world through the sacrifice of His Son. As believers, it’s hard to imagine how people see the Gospel of Jesus Christ in any other way. But the bittersweet nature of the Gospel is this: believers will spend eternity in God’s presence, while unbelievers will be eternally separated from Jesus and His followers. Time will eventually run out and Jesus will return. Are you daily internalizing God’s Word so you can share the sweet taste of God’s salvation with someone else before it’s too late?
12-Dec-25
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 9
What does it say?
The fifth and sixth trumpets are sounded, bringing more judgment in the form of two apparently demonic invasions on the earth.
What does it mean?
The sounding of the fifth trumpet is tied to three woes soon to visit the earth. The first results in the release of a horrible army, prepared to inflict pain on all who have not received the seal of the faithful. The sixth trumpet releases four angels to kill one third of the people on the earth. Despite God’s judgment, people refuse to repent and acknowledge Him. These two trumpets detail how futile it is to resist God. While these judgments should lead to repentance, they do not. Sin has such control over people that they would rather die than repent of their sins and turn to God.
How should I respond?
While the judgments mentioned in this passage are for people who reject God’s gracious offer of salvation through Jesus, God doesn’t overlook sin in the life of His followers either. God takes sin seriously, so He provided a means to deal with sin at great personal cost – the sacrifice of His only Son. How might you be taking God’s grace for granted by refusing to repent of a specific sin? Have you acknowledged His Lordship over every area of your life, including your thoughts? God disciplines His children because He loves us. What do you need to make right with Him today?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 139
What does it say?
The Lord searched David and knew him completely, even from before he was born.
What does it mean?
This psalm starts and ends with the Lord searching David’s heart. God knew everything about him; every day of his life was written down by God. All of his thoughts, words, and actions were completely transparent in God’s presence. David grasped that God knew him better than he knew himself, so he invited the Lord to search him completely and to point out anything in his life that did not please Him. He wanted to see himself as God saw him so he could correct what was wrong. David was in absolute awe of God’s knowledge of and personal involvement in his life.
How should I respond?
God knows everything about your life. He was there even before you took your first breath, and He is with you today. How does it make you feel to know that God sees, hears, and cares about everything you think, say, and do? The answer depends on whether you are currently living in obedience to Christ. Will you invite God to search your heart today? Otherwise, you can become blinded to where you’ve gone wrong and attempt to minimize your sins. It takes courage to look honestly at your life, admit your faults, and seek God’s forgiveness. Your heart and mind are already transparent to the Lord, so why not see yourself the way He sees you? When you do, His all-seeing, all-knowing presence is a comfort – not a concern.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 138
What does it say?
David praised God’s faithfulness and love in the midst of troubles.
What does it mean?
It is uncertain as to exactly when David wrote this psalm, but his circumstances are clear. He was surrounded by enemies and away from Jerusalem in a land filled with false gods. Yet even in the midst of trouble, David’s spiritual life went uninterrupted. God’s unwavering love in such a difficult time gave him the strength and encouragement to worship God with every ounce of his being. His circumstances had not derailed God’s purpose for his life but had given him greater cause to praise the God of Israel to pagan kings. David’s increased troubles served to amplify his understanding of God’s faithfulness, mercy, holiness, and love.
How should I respond?
The troubles of life are difficult; however, they shouldn’t impact you negatively. If anything, the hurdles you face give you greater opportunity to understand the character of God. Personally experiencing God’s hand on your life is quite different from just reading about His grace and mercy or listening to friends’ stories of His faithfulness. In what troubling circumstance do you find yourself today? Have you allowed it to interrupt your worship or your walk with the Lord? What you need is a paradigm shift. Stop looking at the negative and watch for God’s loving, faithful hand.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 8
What does it say?
Seven trumpets come out of the seventh seal. The first four trumpets sound and cause hail and fire and the darkening of one third of the stars and moon.
What does it mean?
This chapter opens with silence in anticipation of the first four trumpet judgments and ends with a warning concerning the coming three trumpets. The first four of these judgments will cause extraordinary natural disasters. The description of the third trumpet could even be seen as possible atomic or nuclear warfare. The wrath of God on those who have rejected His Son is in response to the prayers of God’s people who are sealed with His protection (Revelation 5:8; 7:3).
How should I respond?
As followers of Jesus, we tend to pray more frequently for Christ’s soon return as we get older, but we should also feel an urgency to tell others about Him. Do you have friends or family members who have never committed themselves to Christ? Without a relationship with Jesus, they will go through the most horrible events our world will ever experience. Begin to pray for them daily, and then look for opportunities to tell your own story of repentance and salvation. What has stood in the way of sharing Christ with them before now? In light of today’s passage – what could possibly be more important?

What does it say?
John witnessed the sealing of God’s servants and heard the praise song of a vast multitude.
What does it mean?
The judgment in the sixth seal seems to continue, but the four angels given the task of withholding the four winds from the earth are instructed not to harm the earth or the sea until God puts His seal of protection on His servants. These servants are made up of 144,000 Jews and a multitude of Gentiles who will be saved during the Great Tribulation. John paints a vivid picture of God’s judgment, but he also reminds his readers that God is still merciful to save and protect those who worship Jesus, the Lamb.
How should I respond?
Followers of Jesus have a secure and protected eternity, but that does not guarantee an absence of trouble here on Earth. Just as purchasing a security system will not keep you completely safe from disaster, being faithful to Christ is no guarantee against having problems. Jesus does, however, promise His presence in the midst of trials. What problem do you need to release to Him? Even if the trial does not go away, He will continue to work in your life and give you opportunities to point others to Him through the difficulty.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 6
What does it say?
The Lamb breaks the first six seals, sending God’s judgment on the earth.
What does it mean?
The first four seal judgments (a conqueror, war, famine, and death) have increasingly tragic effects on the earth. Then the breaking of the fifth seal brings a vision of those killed for being faithful to Jesus. The sixth seal contains cosmic phenomena and worldwide disturbances, signaling that God’s final judgment has come. The leaders of the world hide in fear of the wrath of the Lamb, while the martyrs are able to rest until God’s judgment is complete by finding shelter under the altar that represents the Cross where the sacrificial blood of Christ paid for their sin.
How should I respond?
The idea of judgment can be frightening or even disconcerting, but the reality is that God will judge. The question is: How will God judge you? If you have accepted Christ as your Savior, then His sacrificial blood covers the judgment for your sin. As a follower of Christ, you have no need to fear His coming because you already know the outcome. Will you be found frightened or faithful at the coming of the Lord? Are you content to be safe in Christ while people you pass every day still face God’s wrath? Allow this passage to overwhelm you with gratitude for the Cross and motivate you to tell someone about Jesus’ sacrifice today.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 5
What does it say?
The Lamb is declared worthy to open the sealed scroll and is worshipped as God.
What does it mean?
John saw a scroll in the hand of God the Father. Only Jesus is worthy to break its seals and reveal the Father’s judgment on the world. As the Lamb, Jesus purchased salvation by His blood; as the Lion of Judah, He will judge the world; as the root of Jesse, He is eternal God. When Jesus came to the earth the first time, He was rejected as the Son of God, and the world at large denied His divine nature. One day, everyone and everything in Heaven, on earth, under the earth, and even in the sea will give Jesus Christ the same worship that is given to the Father. Jesus is worthy of worship.
How should I respond?
Typically, our society places value on something in light of its scarcity or worth. Often we put these things in a conspicuous place so that others can appreciate them. We sometimes even brag about our valuable items. Jesus is the only Lamb of God, and His worth surpasses everything and everyone else. In what ways do you celebrate His value? You can tell how valuable a thing is by how often you mention it. Check your priorities. How valuable is Jesus to you according to your conversations about Him? How will you show how valuable Jesus is to you today?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 4
What does it say?
John recorded his vision of the worship taking place around the One sitting on the throne in Heaven.
What does it mean?
Revelation 4 gives an amazing description of the power, presence, and position of God the Father and the worship He deserves. Worship is an ongoing theme in Revelation because worship will be an ongoing activity throughout eternity. Two aspects of worship are highlighted – the character of those doing the worship and the character of the One being worshiped. God is worshiped because of His holiness and His sovereignty over all of His creation. These qualities speak to His divine nature through which all things came to be and by which He will rule forever and ever.
How should I respond?
If we could see God in all of His glory, there’s no doubt we would fall to our knees in spontaneous worship. If you want to know what God is like, then look at the life of His only Son recorded in Scripture. God has given us a revelation of Himself in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Seeing God as He is can put your life into proper perspective and help you sort out what is essential from what is incidental. God is holy, and we must be holy in our worship of Him. What needs to change in your life so that you can worship in the presence of the holy God? How will you take time to worship Jesus as your holy, sovereign Creator today?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 137
What does it say?
While the psalmist wept, his Babylonian captors demanded he sing a song of Zion.
What does it mean?
The words of this psalm were written from a broken heart while Israel was in captivity. It’s important to remember that God allowed His people to be driven from their homeland because they had repeatedly refused to repent. So, did the writer long for Jerusalem because it was the holy city where God dwelt or because he missed the sinful life he led there? He hung up his harp and refused to sing at the very time that the songs of Zion would have reminded him of God’s faithfulness, turned Israel’s hearts to the Lord, and witnessed to their pagan captors of their Almighty God.
How should I respond?
It’s much easier to sing along with the praise song on the radio when God’s blessing is evident in your life than when you’re overwhelmed with sorrow or anger. Has something stolen your joy? Don’t wait until you feel better – listen to music today that will remind you of God’s love and faithfulness. If your ability to praise the Lord is based on your circumstances, then there are times when your heart will grow cold. If, however, your joy flows from knowing Christ and living to please Him, you will never be without a song in your heart (Acts 16:25). You’ll be an encouragement to other believers and a powerful witness to those outside of Christ.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 135-136
What does it say?
The psalmist called on Israel to praise the name of the Lord and give thanks to the God of Heaven. His love (mercy) endures forever.
What does it mean?
The writer could not contain the exaltation he felt at the thought of the magnificence of God. The Lord created all things and is sovereign over all. Thoughts of God’s wondrous character, His mighty acts of creation, and His miraculous deliverance, protection and care for Israel caused him to break into jubilant songs of praise and thanksgiving. He saw the utter foolishness of worshipping gods made by human hands. Israel served a compassionate, loving, merciful, and eternal God. The psalmist urged those around him to praise God for who He is and to give thanks for what He had done.
How should I respond?
God is blessed by your praise and thanksgiving. He does not need it, but He loves to hear it. Take a moment to contemplate who God is and what He has done for you personally. Do you, like the writer of these psalms, see the faithfulness of God as He has walked with you? What songs create a sense of awe, moving you to worship, praise, and glorify God? Sing those aloud during the week in your own time of praise at home or in your car. Today let your attitudes, words, and actions show your recognition of God’s magnificent character and gratitude for how He has worked in your life.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 3
What does it say?
John recorded Jesus’ words to the churches in Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.
What does it mean?
The overarching theme in these messages has to do with the reputation of each church. Sardis has a reputation for being very alive, but the believers are weak and need to be strengthened. Philadelphia has a reputation for being weak, but the believers are faithful. Though Sardis’ weakness led to failure, Philadelphia’s weakness drove the faithful to God’s Word. Laodicea has the worst reputation of all. They claim to need nothing, but they are spiritual paupers. Only Philadelphia has a good reputation as a faithful witness to Christ, yet all three of the churches need to respond to Jesus’ message with repentance (as needed) and faithfulness, even in weakness.
How should I respond? |A good reputation can take a lifetime to build, but one wrong act can ruin it. Thomas Paine said, “Reputation is what people think of us; character is what God and angels know of us.” The only reputation that matters is what God thinks of you. He knows everything about you, even those things you like to keep hidden. In what ways are you weak and in need of renewing your strength in Christ? Do you think more highly of your spiritual status than you should? When you focus on building Christ-like character, others notice the change, and you naturally build a good reputation.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 2
What does it say?
John recorded a personal message from the resurrected Christ to the churches of Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, and Thyatira.
What does it mean?
These messages shine a spotlight on issues that are specific to each church in four ways: 1) Each church receives praise for positive traits. 2) Three churches are corrected for something wrong. 3) Each church is given instructions on how to respond. 4) Each church receives a promise for those who overcome. These churches deal with a variety of issues, but the problems mentioned most often deal with false teaching or a loss of passion for Christ. Christ calls them to repent and after that to remain faithful to Him.
How should I respond?
Do you remember life before email or texting? Most of us like receiving personal notes in the mail. In fact, when we receive a letter from a loved one, it can become a precious possession. Imagine receiving a letter from Jesus. How would the words to these four churches compare to how Jesus would respond to your life? Take an inventory of your life right now and talk to Jesus about it. Be ready to repent if necessary, and make a firm commitment to stay on the right course no matter what you may face. Remember, the entire Bible is a letter from God to you, and He wants you to know what He thinks. You cannot read this letter without a response. Will you respond with obedience?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 1
What does it say?
During worship, the resurrected Christ appeared to the apostle John and told him to write down what he saw and send it to the seven churches.
What does it mean?
The Book of Revelation is John’s testimony of the vision given to him by Jesus while he was on the island of Patmos. In fact, he was in exile there because of his faithfulness to testify of Jesus Christ and of God’s works. But even in exile, John made time to worship. During that time, the resurrected and glorified Christ appeared to reveal the consummation of His redemptive plan. In the midst of tribulation and suffering, John was given the privilege of being the witness to the final glorious message of Jesus Christ.
How should I respond?
Are you experiencing some kind of difficulty because you took a stand for truth? When you choose to worship the Lord in any situation, your actions give a faithful testimony of your trust in the goodness and grace of God. Where can you be a faithful witness? Maybe a friend needs comfort or help; then reach out to that person in the name of Jesus. Maybe a neighbor simply needs to hear the truth of the Gospel. Faithfulness is never a losing proposition, regardless of what personal discomfort it may cause. Will you be faithful in your worship and in your witness today?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Jude 1
What does it say?
Jude delivered a strong warning of God’s judgment and urged believers to grow in their faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, and keep themselves in God’s love.
What does it mean?
Using powerful images, Jude depicted the divisive and fruitless nature of apostates who had slipped into the church. These godless men rejected Jesus as the Sovereign Lord and denied central truths of Christianity. Even worse, they caused others to stumble in their faith by denying God’s authority and suggesting that grace gives Christians freedom to continue in sin. Those with a right understanding of Scripture have a responsibility to correct anyone being led astray. Such responsibility requires one to pray and live in the power of the Holy Spirit.
How should I respond?
This passage highlights the importance of knowing the truth of Scripture in order to recognize distorted teaching. Living under the control of the Holy Spirit is the only way to recognize corrupt teaching, maintain personal faith, and help those who are vulnerable to being led away from truth. In which fundamentals of Christianity do you need a better understanding? How does your behavior show you believe in Scripture and consider the Bible the final authority for your life? Commit to becoming a student of the Bible. God will use you to influence others as you live out the truth you find.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – 3 John
What does it say?
Gaius walked in the truth, and Demetrius had a good testimony. Diotrephes, however, caused division in the church by his untruthfulness, inhospitality, and selfishness.
What does it mean?
John contrasted two types of people in the church: those who are humble and willing to serve others and those who put themselves first, desiring power and position. People who genuinely love God have a desire to do what’s right. The right perspective of God gives them the right perspective of self. By not thinking too highly of themselves, these people naturally have a good reputation with other believers. On the other hand, those causing discord in the church show that they aren’t obeying Christ and should be dealt with by church leaders before more harm is done.
How should I respond?
There is no greater example of serving with humility than Christ, so there is no better way to demonstrate that you are a follower of Christ than purposely putting the needs of others before your own. Are you willing to do the seemingly insignificant task? Working behind the scenes might not bring lots of recognition, but it does give a profound sense of satisfaction. Are you a servant, or do you have a self-seeking attitude? Your actions will either help build others up or pull them down. Your attitude can promote either harmony or discord. What kind of reputation will you build today?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 132-134
What does it say?
David vowed to build a dwelling place for God, and God promised that his sons would rule forever if they followed Him. God’s people should praise Him in His sanctuary and be unified.
What does it mean?
The final three psalms in the Songs of Ascents directed Israel’s attention to the center for Israel’s worship – the temple. David’s vow to build a house for God was heavy on his mind during the early years of his reign, but it was not God’s will. It was his son Solomon who built the temple, God’s dwelling place where the tribes of Israel came together in unity to worship. Their common purpose was to sing songs of joy, seek the Lord’s blessing, and praise Him as the Maker of Heaven and Earth. The psalmist reiterates the promises God made when He chose Israel to be His people and David to be His king, both with conditions that involved their obeying and loving Him as Lord of their lives.
How should I respond?
Great things can be accomplished when the members of a family or community live for a common purpose. If any group should demonstrate that kind of peace and unity, it should be the church of Jesus Christ. What purpose do you have in mind as you head to church each week? Are you preoccupied with family matters, petty differences with church members, or opportunities to network for your business? As God’s people, we should cherish the time we spend together in worship. We may not always have the religious freedom to come together in the name of Jesus. Approach worship this week with joy and in a spirit of peace and unity with other believers. Together we can accomplish great things for the Lord.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 129-131
What does it say?
Enemies continually oppressed Israel. The psalmist called on God’s mercy, urging Israel to put their hope in God’s Word and unfailing love. David, too, humbly hoped in the Lord.
What does it mean?
Psalms 129 and 130 were more than likely written by Hezekiah 300 years after David, as a young shepherd, penned Psalm 131. King Hezekiah’s prayers concerned two threats to Israel – enemies from outside her gates and sin within the nation itself. The placement of David’s short psalm directly after Hezekiah’s cry of desperation is not coincidental; his intercession even borrowed from young David’s words, ‘O Israel, put your hope in the Lord.’ Israel needed the same humility before the Lord that had been evident in her greatest king. Their righteous and merciful God was – and is – the only one who could protect and redeem them.
How should I respond?
How often do you pray on behalf of our nation? We need godly intercessors as never before. Like Israel in Hezekiah’s day, we’re reminded daily of nations whose hatred of our country drives them to seek our destruction. The arrogance and blatant rebellion of our own citizens against God and His Word are equally devastating. God’s love is unfailing, but His righteous, holy nature will not tolerate sin. His mercy and forgiveness are our only hope. Let’s unite in our desire for our nation, ‘O America, put your hope in the Lord!’

MyTime, UnassignedRead – 2 John
What does it say?
John commended the elect lady and her children for walking in truth and gave a warning not to entertain false teachers.
What does it mean?
It wasn’t uncommon for false teachers to infiltrate the early church. They traveled from place to place, attempting to influence new Christians by spreading new ideas that didn’t line up with the teachings of Christ. The recipient of John’s letter knew truth and recognized spiritual error. The identity of “the chosen lady” isn’t completely clear, but it’s thought that a church met in her home. She guarded truth in her home for her children and for her church family.
How should I respond?
Believers have a responsibility to live out the truth God has revealed to them and to warn others when biblical error is being taught. The truth of the Gospel is simple: Jesus, the Son of God, came to Earth as the perfect Man, died for the sins of the world, and then rose victorious from the grave. Do the television and radio preachers you listen to teach the whole gospel, or do they avoid parts of the Bible? You have a responsibility to search Scripture for yourself and make its truth a reality in your life. Whom do you need to guard from biblical error? Ask yourself if everything you believe lines up with the Word of God. Anything that robs Jesus of glory is not part of God’s truth.
