Update on Stanley Rasztawicki, he got a closer date for his pacemaker which will be September 7 th. Prayers needed that he will will not have any episodes of passing out from now till then. Otherwise it will be done on a emergency basis and we would prefer it to go as scheduled Papaw loves Baby Charity!!!
Update on Charlie:
Vitals stable. Currently they are just going to be doing dialysis where it cleans/removes toxins from blood and returns it to body. Later if they feel they need to remove fluid they will.
They are going to start turning down some of the paralytic and start to ease up on the sedation and see how his body responds. These first few days they want him to stay pretty calm and relaxed so they will watch this very closely and adjust as needed.
No talk of a tracheotomy yet. Nurse said they normally wait a bit before deciding whether to do it. He said Charlie’s ECMO settings are fairly low (he’s not requiring as much as others) so it could be that in the coming days he could be extubated and not even need a trach. Definitely something to pray for!
He has a feeding tube down his mouth right now. Goal is to eventually try to get him to be able to eat on his own after he’s no longer intubated. They are also going to get his results from his first covid test at the urgent care since they only have one from August 7th and this will hopefully help him be able to come off isolation sooner.
One of the nurses explained the national average of survival of patients intubated and on ECMO is 40%, but at Centennial it is 70%. They all continue to say how his young age is highly in his favor. She reiterated that dialysis is often not long term and with time on ECMO hopefully his heart should be able to start to heal. She said it’s too early to give a long term prognosis whether good or bad.
We are so grateful for your prayers. Update on Charlie R. I'm with Charlie. He's quite a sight with all the tubes but I am so thankful for the care he is getting here. I was able to catch Dr Stell in the hallway. He says Charlie is making good progress and they are pleased with where he is. It's just a lot to take in! He confirmed trach is happening at 11am.
Some prayer requests...
That Charlie continues moving twd healing.
That God protects him from infections and bleeding.
That his heart rate calms and all other vitals continue to improve.
That his emotional state will be strong especially as they try to wake him.
That Faith will be strong as she has been.
That Charlie will defy all the odds and physical healing will happen to him more rapidly than anyone expected.
That God will be glorified and we will all be a great testimony to his faithfulness and grace through all this.
-Rusty This is an update on my pancreatic cancer. All tests have been done here in Lynchburg and at UVA. I am not a candidate for surgery because of my heart. The tumor is wrapped around a main artery and possibly other blood vessels per Dr Bower at UVA. I have chosen not to have treatments because of my heart and I am sick daily. I have so much pain and want to live what time I have left praising my Savior and following His will. I know I have made the right decision following God’s guidance through prayer and His word. Dr MacCallum wants to call in Hospice soon.I am weak and short of breath so she wants someone to check in on me daily. Please pray for my wonderful husband Bill and my children Christina and Marie. Also our good friends Dianne and Bob who have been so good to us. My daughter Marie is coming home September 3 for a short visit. I have not seen her in many years, Please pray that God will help me to be the Mom she needs. Dr Bouer has given me 9 months but I know God is in control. Thank you for your prayers Pray for my Friend Thelma ,Her sister Lynn who has cancer and needs God’s healing Pray for Lisa, her son John is need of a liver transplant and kidney transplant! Also Lisa needs wisdom and God’s Grace in this trying time In need of prayer for Stan Rasztawicki because he needs a pacemaker asap. Waiting for the insurance to give the ok!!!Dictors hands are tied till then. He has a pulse of 35 at times and other times 65 . At this point we never know when and where he can pass out. Been having BP issues for months now but found his left and right bundel branches are not in sequence. Finally we have the answer but proceure is on hold Prayers for another chance and full restoration in a special relationship He's being put on ecmo now. It's about a 45 min procedure and a little delicate to say the least. Please pray it goes smoothly.
Dr. Stell is now Charlie's doctor. He is the head icu doc at centennial hospital. He came to oversee the ecmo connection and transfer and spoke to me beforehand to explain what is happening.
The ecmo machine takes the blood out of the body, filters the blood and adds oxygen and takes out carbon dioxide, then sends it back to the body. So there are two large catheter type tubes taking and replacing the blood. There is risk of infection but they work hard to be clean and monitor closely and treat with antibiotics if necessary. There are other risks but they manage closely.
He explained the average time on the ecmo machine is about six weeks. The shortest successful he's seen is about three weeks. And they had one patient successfully off the ecmo after well over 100 days. Six weeks average.
He explained they will begin tomorrow seeing if they can wake him. They would actually like him to be awake during these days. If he is in too much pain or agitated they will sedate him and work to slowly get to a place they can wake him. They will in the next couple of days insert what I think they call a tracheotomy. Breathing tube in his throat. He used a similar but slightly different word but you get the idea. He said patients heal from it just fine and it is definitely preferable to a breathing tube in your mouth. That will prob happen tomorrow.
One other very sobering thing. He said there is about a 40 percent mortality rate with people Charlie's age on ecmo. That means he has about a 60 percent chance of success. I was certainly hoping for much higher than that. But he assured me this was definitely his highest chance for success. So we are in for a long journey of prayer and waiting. But I am very thankful to be where we are. Thank you for your prayers. Please pray for my mom Lorraine’s salvation and pray for her healing. She lost her hearing, has memory loss, bad posture, body pain, and high blood pressure. Pray for excellent health. Pray for a long life for Lorraine.Pray for the removal of debt and financial blessings and financial security for Lorraine. Pray Lorraine’s possessions last a hundred times longer and will supernaturally become newer and repaired. Also, please pray for salvation and excellent health and long life for my uncle Seve, aunt Jackie and healing and long life for my mom's boyfriend Joe who has cancer..
