For Unto You…Messiah

Key Verse: Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Jeremiah 23:5-6 Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. 6 In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
2 Samuel 7:12-13 When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever
Jeremiah 22:24-30 As I live,” says the Lord, “though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, were the signet on My right hand, yet I would pluck you off; 25 and I will give you into the hand of those who seek your life, and into the hand of those whose face you fear—the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the hand of the Chaldeans. 26 So I will cast you out, and your mother who bore you, into another country where you were not born; and there you shall die. 27 But to the land to which they desire to return, there they shall not return. 28 “Is this man Coniah a despised, broken idol—A vessel in which is no pleasure? Why are they cast out, he and his descendants, And cast into a land which they do not know? 29 O earth, earth, earth, Hear the word of the Lord! 30 Thus says the Lord: ‘Write this man down as childless, A man who shall not prosper in his days; For none of his descendants shall prosper, Sitting on the throne of David, And ruling anymore in Judah.’
When we read the genealogy of Christ, recorded in two places in Scripture, we find what could be contradictions in God’s Word. It’s important to know that these supposed contradictions do not exist at all and that Jesus is the Messiah, sent to take away the sins of the world. Jesus was and is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies of the coming messiah.
We also see the interesting line of characters that make up Jesus’ family tree. A great encouragement to all of us.
1. Messiah Will Be In The line of David
a. 2 Samuel 7:13b …and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
b. Psalm 89 and other passages promise that from the line of David the messiah will come
c. Matthew 1:6 – the line of David (through Solomon)
d. Luke 3:31-32 – the line of David (through Nathan)
e. Fulfills the OT prophecies of the coming Messiah
2. Messiah Will Not Be In The Line of Jehoiachin
a. Jeremiah 22:30 Thus says the Lord: ‘Write this man down as childless, A man who shall not prosper in his days; For none of his descendants shall prosper, Sitting on the throne of David, And ruling anymore in Judah.
b. Luke 3:31-32a the son of Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattathah, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse…
c. Luke gives us the genealogy that leads to Jesus but through Mary’s line
d. Therefore, Jesus fulfills the prophecy through the line of Joseph AND He fulfills the prophecy that He will not be through the line of Jehoiachin
e. Fulfills the OT prophecy that the coming messiah will not come through Jehoiachin
3. Messiah Will Be In The Line of the Good
a. Matthew 1 gives us the story of 28 generations through about 1800 years
b. Luke 3 gives us the story all the way back to Adam (beginning of time)
c. Jesus came through the line of some of the great stories of the Bible
4. Messiah Will Be In The Line of the Bad
a. Abraham lied (Genesis 12 & 20)
b. Isaac lied (Genesis 26)
c. Jacob lied and cheated (Genesis 27)
d. Judah helped sell his brother as a slave (Genesis 37)
e. Rahab was a prostitute (Joshua 2)
f. Ruth was a gentile (Book of Ruth)
g. David was a murderer and an adulterer (2 Samuel 11 & 12)
h. Bathsheba cheated on her husband (2 Samuel 11)
i. Solomon allowed the worship of false gods (1 Kings 11)
j. Rehoboam walked away from his father’s generation and legacy and split Israel in two (1 Kings 12)
k. Multiple kings listed were evil (i.e. Manassah, Jehoiachin)
5. Messiah Can Use Anyone At Anytime To Change the World
