MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 35-37
What does it say?
God is great! Who can know Him? Elihu finished by declaring God’s goodness, justice, power, and sovereignty. Man cannot know or understand God’s ways or reasons.
What does it mean?
Elihu felt it was his duty to speak for God in order to help Job gain understanding. He believed Job was neither obedient nor repentant and that was why he was suffering. Elihu argued that Job wasn’t owed blessing for obedience because God is sovereign. Regardless of whether or not Elihu understood Job’s situation, he did understand some things about God’s person: the Lord is powerful, benevolent, just, and sovereign.
How should I respond?
Schoolteachers and parents alike often use rewards as positive reinforcement for right behavior. Likewise, rewards are withheld when a child’s actions are unacceptable. We come to expect rewards for doing what’s right, even from God. While obedience does bring blessing, we don’t always recognize how and why the Lord is directing our lives as He does. His blessing may come by withholding something you’re praying for earnestly. What painful situation might actually be God’s goodness in your life? What change are you resisting? Find peace in the confident recognition that God is in control. Remain obedient and look for His powerful, benevolent hand.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 45
What does it say?
Joseph and his brothers shared an emotional reunion. Pharaoh invited Joseph’s entire family to move to Egypt and promised to give them the best land.
What does it mean?
Joseph had waited nearly twenty years for this family reunion. The trials and hardships that previously seemed so overwhelming now fell into perspective as Joseph saw how those experiences had served to save his family. He had been strategically placed in a position that literally took his family from famine to feasting. Rather than focus on the years of agony, Joseph chose to focus on the sense of purpose he felt. The forgiveness he generously gave would never be forgotten. Joseph’s entire life had led to this moment. God used the suffering and hardship of one man, Joseph, to preserve the future nation of Israel.
How should I respond?
No one wants to linger in painful circumstances. It doesn’t matter if the pain is physical or emotional, we try to end it as quickly as possible. Like Joseph, you may not see how God can use your difficult circumstances for anything positive while in the midst of them, but given time your perspective can change. God doesn’t cause every situation we find ourselves in, but if He has allowed it, then He can use it to accomplish His purpose for you and for those your life will impact (Rom. 8:28.) What past situation do you now see in a different light? Ask God for His perspective on the circumstances you face today.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 32-34
What does it say?
No matter what happened to Job, God was just, fair, and right in all He did.
What does it mean?
Job’s three friends seemed to give up on his admitting to some grave sin. Meanwhile, Elihu, a young bystander decided to convey his perspective on Job’s situation and his friends’ advice. He found holes in the arguments of both sides: Job placed blame on God, while the friends found Job guilty without evidence. There are different opinions as to whether Elihu was arrogant or had great insight for his age. Either way, he defended the character of God in the Lord’s silence. Elihu correctly argued that God could never act wickedly, pervert justice, or show partiality.
How should I respond?
We’ll never have all of the answers during life’s most difficult moments. But what do you do when God seems to be completely silent or inactive? Focus on His character traits while you’re waiting for Him to act. For instance, knowing that He is just will guard from saying, “It’s not fair” or “Why me?” What other attributes of God have you seen in Scripture? How do they relate to your current circumstances? What unanswered questions do you have today? Turn them over to your Lord and rest in knowing that He is just. Wait on the Lord (Psalm 27:14); He sees what you are going through.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 44
What does it say?
Joseph’s brothers again left Egypt with food but were soon overtaken and accused of theft. Once more in front of Joseph, Judah pleaded to be substituted for Benjamin, who appeared to be guilty.
What does it mean?
Joseph’s brothers were about to be tested to determine if their hearts had changed in the years since selling their younger brother into slavery. They were stunned when the supposed object of robbery was found in Benjamin’s bag. Joseph was willing to let them go only by keeping Benjamin as his slave. Judah, full of emotion and concern for their father’s life, begged Joseph to accept him as a substitute for his younger brother. This was the confirmation Joseph desperately wanted to hear. He had given them a chance to prove themselves and was not disappointed. Restoration to his family was now possible.
How should I respond?
Chances are—your family squabbles haven’t escalated to the same level as Joseph’s. However, conflict between family members can cause division that lasts weeks, months and even years. What individuals have you had a falling out with? Have you written them off? Years of disagreements can lead to thoughts such as, ‘They’ll never change,’ or ‘They don’t deserve another chance.’ What can you do today to start mending those relationships? Will you choose to pray that God will bless them and soften their hearts? Remember, as long as you each have breath, there’s hope that the relationship can be restored.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 43
What does it say?
Jacob sent his sons on another trip to Egypt to buy grain. Judah knew their only hope would be to take Benjamin with them, so he guaranteed Benjamin’s safety to their father.
What does it mean?
The fact that Judah took personal responsibility for Benjamin’s safety was evidence that he had changed. It had been Judah who urged his brothers to sell Joseph (rather than kill him). Joseph put a plan in motion to see if they were truly repentant. From the time the men arrived at Joseph’s home, nothing was as they expected. They were treated as honored guests — not thieves — and we seating according to birth order. The household even seemed to know the God of Abraham (vv. 23, 29). When they left Jacob on their journey to Egypt, they could not have anticipated the feast that would be set before them. Who was this merciful and generous ‘governor’ of Egypt?
How should I respond?
Although this passage isn’t written about Jesus, there are parallels between Joseph’s relationship with his brothers and our relationship with Christ. He — knowing your heart of repentance for your deeds—forgives you freely and erases the transgression. He has gone to prepare a place for you (John 14:2) and will prepare a feast for you (Ps. 23:5). You will enjoy His presence forever (Rev. 21). God knows everything about you and loves you anyway. Have you bowed in recognition of the King of kings and Lord of lords?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 27-28
What does it say?
Job talked about the source of all wisdom and understanding. Man can search and find treasures deep in the earth more easily than he can find wisdom.
What does it mean?
Precious metals and gems have been desired for millennia. Man has gone to great lengths to uncover the hidden treasures God placed in the earth. Long before Solomon, Job posed the question, “Where can wisdom or understanding be found?” Certainly not in the depths of the ground or the sea, nor can it be bought with any amount of riches. The answer is given in verse 28. The fear of the Lord (respect and awe for the majesty of God) is wisdom and turning from evil is understanding. Job knew he needed wisdom and that God was its only source.
How should I respond?
How much money is enough? The world’s answer… just a little bit more. Yet no amount of money can buy wisdom or provide security. If people without Christ greedily long for more “stuff,” shouldn’t those who claim His name pursue wisdom? Truly seeking after God and trusting Him will put you on the path of wisdom. Seeking Him starts by studying His Word. What current situation has left you perplexed? What are you pursuing for the answer, more money or godly wisdom? Ask God for understanding as you study Scripture. A God-given “aha” moment is worth more than any treasure.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 42
What does it say?
Famine became severe in Canaan, and Jacob knew his family would survive only by purchasing grain from Egypt. Ten brothers made the journey, not realizing their younger brother was now the person in charge of the food supply.
What does it mean?
During Joseph’s years in Egypt, the Bible says nothing about the maturing of his older brothers whose characters had been steeped in jealousy and violence. Surely it would have been sufficient for some to journey to Egypt, yet God had all the sons but Benjamin go, giving Joseph the chance to hear their unified regret. Their conversation revealed years of guilt over their treatment of Joseph, causing him to be overwhelmed with emotion. Even so, Joseph decided to test whether or not their hearts had truly changed. He was not ready to reveal himself until he knew Benjamin was truly alive and well.
How should I respond?
Words spoken in haste or knee-jerk reactions from the past can cause feelings of guilt and regret. It’s not always possible to go to people you’ve wronged in order to seek forgiveness; but when you do, it can bring healing to everyone involved. What relationship in your life needs to be restored? What specific words or actions do you need to apologize for? Have you said or done something this week that needs to be set right? Guilt and regret over the past accomplish nothing unless you attach it to action in the present. Regardless of the other person’s response, you can be released from guilt.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 25-26
What does it say?
Bildad questions how any man can be righteous before God, who has dominion over everything. Job talks about man’s frailty and God’s power over His creation.
What does it mean?
This short exchange between Bildad and Job focuses on the power and majesty of God compared to man’s insignificance. In Bildad’s last words to Job, he tried to convey man’s complete unworthiness to question God’s justice. Job’s sarcastic response conveys how unhelpful Bildad’s words were at such a difficult time. Bildad chose to further humiliate his friend rather than encourage him in his frustration and despair. Job’s response shows an understanding that God’s actions and power are incomprehensible.
How should I respond?
Our view of God is limited. We tend to think of Him in light of our current circumstances. We see God as either loving or just, but it’s difficult to understand that He is both, and so much more. How have your personal experiences skewed your thoughts about God? The best way to broaden your understanding is a commitment to study Scripture daily. Dig into His Word and ask God to reveal truths about Himself. Changing how you view the Lord will change how you see yourself and everyone with whom you come into contact.
February 12, 2023
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 41
What does it say?
Two years passed, and Pharaoh became troubled by a series of dreams. God gave Joseph the interpretations, and he was then placed in a position directly under Pharaoh.
What does it mean?
God had been refining Joseph for most of his life as he went from one trial to another. Each time he had reacted with godly integrity and strength of character. He had been faithful in each set of circumstances, and now God was ready to elevate him to a position higher than he could have imagined. Being brought before the Pharaoh of an idolatrous nation, he unhesitatingly gave the true, living God credit for his life and wisdom.
How should I respond?
Those who work with valuable metals know that the long purifying process involves two vital parts, heating and refining. As the heat causes impurities to rise to the top, they are skimmed off, and the process starts again. How has God been purifying your life? What heat or trial has God allowed to linger? The Bible says that once you have been tested and purified, you will come forth as gold (Job 23:10). Are you, like Joseph, ready to give God the credit for His strength and grace in your life? When the opportunities arise, don’t hesitate – God has been developing your character for just such a moment.
February 10, 2021
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 23-24
What does it say?
Although he was terrified of what else God might have in his future, Job knew he would be delivered if he could find God and plead his innocence in person.
What does it mean?
God’s comments about Job are evidence of the close relationship they shared (Job 1:8). Nothing about Job’s character had changed, yet he felt as if a chasm had been placed between him and the Lord. But despite ominous circumstances and gripping fear, Job maintained his innocence as he laid out the case for God’s judgment on those who rebel against Him. Because he had enjoyed such close fellowship with the Lord, Job understood His character – God’s justice is certain, even if it seems delayed. So if Job deserved God’s righteous judgment, why was he still alive?
How should I respond?
Emotions are powerful. Anxiety and fear can rob your appetite and steal your sleep. You may be terrified of what else could go wrong and why God hasn’t already shown up to fix things. Such draining emotions can alter your sense of reality, creating a feeling of distance from the Lord. We know from Scripture, however, that God never changes and He never leaves us (Hebrews 13:5-8). Like Job, find strength by reminding yourself of what you know to be true. Ask Jesus to give you peace of mind to govern any turmoil in your heart. God created you with emotions, but never intended them to rule over you.
February 11, 2023
MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 40
What does it say?
Two servants of Pharaoh were thrown into prison and placed under Joseph’s care. After Joseph interpreted their dreams, one servant was released but soon forgot him.
What does it mean?
Even though Joseph was wrongfully imprisoned, he used his God-given abilities to serve his fellow-prisoners. He could have wallowed in self-pity and spent his energy questioning God. Instead, he chose to serve God in every way he could — exactly where he was — because it was the place God allowed him to be. Joseph’s actions were from a heart that truly trusted God for his life. How was Joseph repaid for his kindness to the cup-bearer? He ‘did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.’ Joseph would have to wait for God’s reward in God’s time.
How should I respond?
At some point, we’ve all done the right thing, only to have it overlooked. It’s easy to feel unappreciated when no one seems to notice the time and energy you’ve given at home, at work, or in your community. When those emotions arise, ask yourself, ‘Why did I do it in the first place?’ Were you trying to impress someone or promote your own interests? Or, was your motivation purely to use your talents and gifts to serve the Lord? Others may forget the good things you’ve done, but God hasn’t. Stay committed to serving Him in every way you can, right where you are. His is the only pat on the back that really counts.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 20-21
What does it say?
Zophar describes the future of the godless as filled with disgrace and disaster. But Job questions why God allows the wicked to live in prosperity and die in peace.
What does it mean?
Job saw the injustice of his own suffering compared to the seemingly long and peaceful lives of those who renounced God. He could not rectify Zophar’s speech regarding God’s punishment of wickedness with reality. If God is just, why did He allow wicked people to prosper while he suffered unimaginable pain? At the same time, Job recognized the limits of his understanding compared to God’s. Job was willing to accept that he didn’t fully understand God’s ways and pointed out that neither did his advisors.
How should I respond?
As soon as children can talk, they start asking questions; that’s how they learn and mature. The same is true of our spiritual growth. God is not afraid of or angered by our questions. Questions are fuel for spiritual maturity; they prompt us to seek answers. Thinking we have all of the answers, like Job’s friends, is misguided theology. What questions do you have for God? Honestly admit your questions to the Lord, and then dig into His Word to see what it says on the matter. Our finite thinking means we can’t possibly understand everything that God allows (Isaiah 55:8-9). But the more you learn about Him in Scripture, the more you’ll trust His character and understand His ways.|Further Reading: Job 22

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 39
What does it say?
Potiphar, an Egyptian officer, bought Joseph as a slave. Potiphar’s house was soon blessed in all that was within Joseph’s control until false accusations sent him to prison.
What does it mean?
If anyone ever had a reason to be angry or bitter at circumstances, it was Joseph! He is an example of how to respond when treated unfairly. He was sold by jealous brothers, falsely accused by his master’s wife, and unjustly imprisoned after fleeing to protect his integrity. Although he suffered greatly (Psalm 105:17-19), Joseph continued to be so committed to God that soon he was in a position of authority in the prison, again with God blessing him beyond measure. Rather than becoming bitter, Joseph allowed God to shape and mold him through difficulty.
How should I respond?
Are you, like Joseph, in a time of adversity? How has someone’s treatment of you caused pain and grief? Your response to those situations will play a huge part in determining who you become. Times like those will either increase your faith in God or cause you to become angry with Him and turn away. Do a self-examination; is any area of your heart being withheld from God because of bitterness from a wound? Give the hurt to God and commit to honoring Him in the midst of it. God can use even the worst circumstances in your life to make you more like Him.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 18-19
What does it say?
Bildad concludes that a person in Job’s present condition must be evil. Job maintained his innocence and proclaimed God as both his oppressor and his Redeemer.
What does it mean?
Bildad tried to jolt Job into repentance by describing the fate of the wicked, which in his mind perfectly summarized Job’s current state. Job’s reply marks the depth of his despair followed by his greatest proclamation of God. At this, his lowest point, Job firmly believed that God had come against him and withheld justice. At the same time he ached for the day that God would stand as his Defender and tell the world of Job’s innocence. Job’s deepest despair inspired his deepest faith. No matter what God had allowed, Job was certain that only God could deliver and vindicate him.
How should I respond?
What allows a person to face life’s deepest despair with an equally deep faith? Recognizing the Lord for who He is – the only secure shelter during life’s roughest storms. Each of us must choose to either draw closer in faith or turn away from Him in anger. Allowing Christ to change your life prior to those painful moments makes turning to Him instinctive. That kind of trust floods your mind with peace and your heart with joy, which glorifies the Lord. How can you praise God today regardless of your circumstances? Will you join Job in declaring, “My Redeemer lives”?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 38
What does it say?
Judah made a new life in a Canaanite town. God killed two of his three sons for wickedness. After Judah sent his daughter-in-law Tamar home to live as a widow, she deceived him, became pregnant, and had Judah’s twin sons, Perez and Zerah.
What does it mean?
Israel and his sons were the only family in Canaan that worshipped the one, true God. Nevertheless, Judah left his family and immersed himself in a godless culture. As a result, Judah’s family was heavily influenced by the wickedness around them, costing two sons their very lives. Fearful of losing his last son, Judah deceitfully returned Tamar to her father’s house rather than giving her in marriage to his youngest son. In return, Tamar deceived Judah and became pregnant. Disobedience and deceit had plunged Judah’s life into one of disappointment and regret.
How should I respond?
The encouragement of godly companions is as important in our society as in Judah’s day. Immersing yourself in today’s culture is an invitation to a sinful lifestyle. In what way has our society influenced you? How has that influence affected your home and family? Having someone keep you accountable is as necessary for your spirit as a doctor is for your body. If you haven’t already done so, ask someone to pray for you each day and hold you accountable as you live for Christ. Will you live a life of faithfulness or regret?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 17
What does it say?
Job declared that as a result of all he had lost, his spirit was broken. Job cried out to God for relief and expressed that his only hope was the grave.
What does it mean?
God had allowed Satan to take everything and everyone away from Job. All he had left was his physical existence, which was miserable and seemed to be coming to an end. Still, Job held strongly to his innocence and poured out his heart to God. The decimation of his plans for the future caused Job to be completely broken as he sank into depression. With every dream shattered, he saw no hope but to accept whatever future God had for him, even if meant a lonely grave.
How should I respond?
Life seldom turns out the way you think it will. We tend to cling to our own plans until we reach the end of our rope. God, however, is in the business of using broken people who are unconditionally surrendered to Him. Trading our own ideas for the unknown can seem terrifying when life throws us a curve ball. Surrender requires faith that God can make something good out of our shattered dreams. What future plans do you need to release to the Lord? As followers of Jesus, He alone is our hope. Are you willing to surrender to God in the same way that Jesus did saying, “Not my will, but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42)?

What does it say?
Jacob had many sons, but favored Joseph. His jealous brothers became even more jealous after hearing about Joseph’s dreams that they would one day bow to him. So, they sold him as a slave and led their father to believe he was killed by wild animals.
What does it mean?
Jacob was no stranger to parental favoritism; he had been favored by his mother and had fallen into the same pattern with Joseph. Jealousy led his brothers to scheme for a way to get rid of their younger brother. They were not willing to accept that Joseph’s dreams could have been revelations from God. As a result, they turned to their own misguided ways to deal with the issue—choosing to sell Joseph into slavery. Favoritism and jealousy had caused discord and separation between two generations of siblings.
How should I respond?
The attitude of jealousy is a problem for many. Whether it occurs in the home, at school, or at work, jealousy can cause a major problem if not dealt with correctly. What causes your feelings of jealousy? How have your attempts to handle it on your own been misguided? First, take the situation to God who loves you as much as He loves anyone else. Second, if you need to work something out with someone, don’t delay; waiting only gives time for negative emotions to fester. As a parent, ask God to reveal any words or actions that show favoritism toward one child. Action on your part today sets the stage for healthy sibling relationships in the future.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 15-16
What does it say?
Eliphaz accused Job of being proud and made a case that Job deserved his lot because of his wickedness. Job responded to those who came to comfort him.
What does it mean?
Because Job knew his faith in God hadn’t faltered, his friends’ accusations were not comforting, but insulting. Job was distressed, humiliated, and despised by his community; relief was nowhere in sight. He believed God had caused his distress, although he couldn’t understand the reasons. Still, Job believed that God heard his cries and saw that his heart was humble. He firmly believed that God’s faithfulness was unwavering. Job’s only comfort was his belief that God could be trusted to intercede for him.
How should I respond?
What Job believed to be true, we know to be true. Jesus Himself intercedes for us from His throne in Heaven. Followers of Christ should pray for one another and offer comfort when we can. Our efforts, however, are limited by our humanity. Only Jesus – God with us – can intercede for us perfectly and continually (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25). Only the Holy Spirit – God in us – can provide perfect peace, comfort, and guidance through the storms of life (John 14:16, 26). What situation is causing you to grieve? To whom have you turned for comfort? Talk to God – there is no lasting comfort but His.

What does it say?
God told Jacob to return to Bethel. There, God renewed His promises with Jacob and gave him the name, Israel.
What does it mean?
Difficult times were ahead for Jacob—the death of his beloved wife Rachel while giving birth to her second son Benjamin and later the death of his father. Two things helped prepare Jacob for the rough road ahead. First, God called Jacob to go back to a place of major spiritual significance, Bethel. He sought to strengthen Jacob by renewing His promises to him. Next, Jacob needed to remove false gods that had crept into his life and his family. Spiritual renewal required renewed commitment. God was drawing Jacob into an even deeper relationship, which would bring comfort in the days ahead.
How should I respond?
Some periods of life are more difficult than others. We seldom know ahead of time that we’re headed into a rough season until we are in the middle of it. The same two things that helped Jacob can still help us. Where is your ‘Bethel’? What places or events hold significance in your spiritual growth? Those are reminders that God is present and ever-faithful, even when life seems to fall apart. Then, where have you gotten off track and complacent in your relationship with God? What ungodly influence needs to be removed? God is patiently calling you back to Himself. He desires to give you the strength and comfort needed for everything you will face.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 14
What does it say?
Job contemplated the brevity and difficulty of human life. He saw no hope for relief or restoration before his death.
What does it mean?
Complete and utter distress caused Job to look back on his previously blessed life as short and pointless. He viewed death as an end to his pain. Even though Job didn’t seem to have full knowledge concerning the resurrection of the body and the promise of Heaven, he knew God well enough to understand that He is able to do anything. Job briefly wondered about the possibilities of renewed life without misery or resurrection after death. He didn’t allow himself to wonder for long, though, before he blamed God for taking away any hope, dismissed the thought of recovering from his misery, and believed that only death could bring relief.
How should I respond?
As Christians, eternal life is our greatest hope and at times, our only comfort. What wonders await us once we are in the presence of the Lord forever, away from sin and sadness! Until then, we experience pain, loss, and loneliness; sometimes we struggle to maintain hope in the Lord. We must remember that God is able to do more than we could ever imagine (Eph. 3:20). During dark times, what He wants most is for us to trust Him and wait for Him. In what area of your life has your hope in God diminished? Talk to God in these moments, and ask for grace while you place hope in Him.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 34
What does it say?
Shechem, the son of a city ruler, violated Dinah, Jacob’s daughter. Even though he sought to marry her, Jacob’s sons deceived and destroyed the men of the city.
What does it mean?
Our last chapter was a beautiful picture of love and forgiveness. Here we see what a lack of forgiveness and revenge can do. Shechem and his father came to Jacob with a repentant spirit and a desire to make things right. They even went as far as submitting to circumcision to be able to intermarry with Jacob’s family. Yet the sons of Jacob, bent on revenge, held hatred and bitterness for the men of Shechem. Led by Simeon and Levi, they attacked and killed all of the men, plundered the city, and took the women and children captive. The children of Jacob responded to their anger in a way that made them just as guilty as Shechem.
How should I respond?
Our first instinct is to lash out and strike back when we or someone close to us is harmed. But anger and vengeance have a way of blinding us to the truth. When we let anger get the best of us, we no longer see things clearly and forget the grace that has been shown to us by God for our sin. Who has wronged you? Take time right now to search your heart. Are you harboring anger against that person? Now is the time to give your anger, hurt, and bitterness to God. When you remember that Christ has forgiven you, it is easier to forgive others.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 12-13
What does it say?
Job responded to his friends and prayed to the Lord.
What does it mean?
Job‘s friends repeatedly rebuked him and gave him no comfort or encouragement. He had reached the conclusion that their silence would be the best wisdom they could offer. He knew his only true and lasting comfort would be from God Himself. Even with all God had allowed to happen, Job continued to hope in the Lord. He decided to take his case straight to God instead of accepting the judgment of everyone around him. He wanted to speak to the Lord directly and longed to hear His reply.
How should I respond?
Many times the encouragement and answers we seek from friends may be limited or inappropriate. God is the only one who can give complete assurance. Perfect comfort requires a perfect Comforter. The Holy Spirit comes alongside us to give comfort so we will know how to offer the same to others in their times of need (2 Corinthians 1:3-5). Where do you turn when a problem occurs: Do you turn to social media, call your friends, or take the issue to the Lord first? Intercessory prayer is good and necessary, but going directly to God offers direct comfort. In what situation do you need to experience the comfort of the Holy Spirit? As you accept His comfort, you’ll be able to recognize and help others who need to do the same.

What does it say?
Jacob prepared to be reunited with Esau. He separated his family by their wives and went ahead of them. When he saw Esau, he bowed down before him. Esau saw Jacob and ran to him, threw his arms around him, and wept.
What does it mean?
Jacob by his actions was seeking his brother’s forgiveness. The gifts he sent ahead of him were an attempt to pay back what he stole from his brother when he took his birthright and blessing. He humbled himself by bowing before his brother to show his repentance for how he had treated him. Jacob was met with unexpected forgiveness from Esau. Upon seeing Jacob, Esau ran to meet him. He threw his arms around Jacob and kissed him. This simple act by Esau showed that Jacob had nothing to fear and that their relationship as brothers had been restored.
How should I respond?
What relationship in your life needs to be restored? This passage is a beautiful picture of what God can do in a life when it is surrendered to Him. From whom do you need to seek forgiveness? Maybe your family is struggling relationally, and you don’t know how to fix it. Be encouraged because God is able to reach even those farthest from Him. Take time now to pray for your family. Ask God how you can show humility to those you may have offended. God is in the business of mending relationships. Ask in faith, and wait for Him to do the impossible.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 11
What does it say?
Job’s third friend, Zophar, called on Job to repent of his sin and stop mocking God.
What does it mean?
‘The remarkable thing about Job is not that he overcame his circumstances but rather that he survived his counselors’ – Dr. Paige Patterson. Just like the other two friends who lacked understanding and compassion, Zophar called on Job to repent of his sin. After telling Job to stop mocking the Lord, he went on to say that he deserved even more suffering than God had already allowed. Zophar’s emotional rebuke was filled with condemnation, and it ended with a severe warning. Sadly, Job’s friends were doing more harm than good.
How should I respond?
It’s important to pray and ask God for discernment before offering advice. Sometimes we offer our own opinions and thoughts rather than giving godly counsel from God’s Word. Are you helping your friends with the advice you give or adding to their problems? Matthew 12:34 says, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Ask the Lord to examine your heart and intentions before you speak. Then, rely on Him to give you the words to say. How might you have condemned or accused someone when you should have shown love and compassion? Based on today’s passage, what will you do differently next time?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 32
What does it say?
Jacob prepared to return home to face Esau. As a result of wrestling with God all night, his named was changed to Israel, and he received a permanent limp.
What does it mean?
Jacob was wise in preparing for the worst, not knowing if Esau still planned to kill him for taking his birthright twenty years earlier. As Jacob went off by himself to pray, he had no idea that the meeting with Esau would pale by comparison to the encounter he was about to have with God. Before the night and the wrestling match were over, God would change Jacob’s life and his name. No longer was he Jacob, the ‘deceiver’ but Israel (‘one who has power with God’). As dawn broke, he returned to his family limping—a physical reminder that he was forever changed by God’s touch.
How should I respond?
Many times we find ourselves in situations in which we have no control over the outcome. But we can put our hope in God to deliver us in times of crisis and uncertainty. Like Jacob, remind yourself of what God has already promised to do. Take some time to find and ponder some of the promises God has made to you in His Word, and then get alone with Him and pray. Even if you ‘wrestle’ with God over the situation or the outcome, time alone in His presence is life changing. What crisis are you facing today? You can trust Him. His ‘touch’ on your life will be evidence that you’ve had an encounter with God.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 30:25-31:55
What does it say?
Jacob separated from Laban. Jacob’s faithfulness and obedience were met with anger and accusation.
What does it mean?
Jacob served Laban faithfully for twenty years, and in that time he multiplied Laban’s wealth and family exponentially. Then, as he prepared to return home, his diligence and obedience were met with deceit and hostility. After so many years of faithfulness, he was treated as a thief and a liar. He could easily have questioned why God allowed this to happen. Instead, he chose obedience, and God showed that all along He had been faithful in protecting and prospering Jacob.
How should I respond?
There are times when circumstances are the opposite of what we expect even when our actions come from pure motives. In those moments, it is easy to feel hopeless or alone. Though we may not see it, God is always actively involved in the lives of His children. We can choose to focus on the circumstances or on the God who is constantly watching over us. Do you believe that God is actively involved in your life even when you can’t see it? Take time to pray and ask God what He is doing in your life. You may discover that even though you didn’t realize it, He has been moving all along.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 8-9
What does it say?
Bildad encouraged Job to repent, asserting that God wouldn’t punish Job unless he or someone in his family had sinned. Job then responded to Bildad’s call for repentance.
What does it mean?
From Bildad’s point of view, Job showed disrespect toward God by questioning why he was suffering. Bildad couldn’t comprehend that God would permit the righteous to experience such pain. He felt that only those who sinned against God would be punished through suffering, so he urged Job to repent from his sin. Instead of encouraging Job to trust in God’s compassion and grace, he made accusations concerning Job and his family. Job couldn’t imagine how to prove one’s innocence to a Holy God. In his anguish, Job felt that he had been found guilty, and his only option was to plead with his Judge for mercy.
How should I respond?
As followers of Christ today, we also suffer, grieve, and even question. During our grief and suffering, we must rely on God’s mercy and grace. Mercy is best described as God’s not giving us what we deserve, whereas grace is God’s giving us what we don’t deserve. No one is holy or righteous enough to earn God’s favor. How have you tried to explain life’s ups and downs without regard for God’s grace? You can’t rely on your own goodness, but God’s grace is available to get you through any circumstance.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 29:31-30:24
What does it say?
Leah, Rachel, Bilhah and Zilpah give birth to eleven sons of Jacob.
What does it mean?
Driven by jealousy and discontent, Leah and Rachel turned childbearing into a competition. Even in the face of repeated blessing, the sisters were not content with what God had given them. They each wanted what the other had: Leah coveted the love that Jacob showed to Rachel, and Rachel yearned for Leah’s ability to have children. Again and again they competed in their search for contentment only to find frustration. No matter what they were given, or what they achieved, they could not enjoy it because their focus was on winning rather than being thankful.
How should I respond?
At times we may find we are not satisfied with what we have or where we are in life. It’s easy to think the solution is just around the corner and that contentment will finally be found in the next achievement or possession. This is never the case since those things provide only temporary satisfaction. God has designed us to find contentment in our relationship with Him. And how is this done? Commit each day to thank Him for everything He has given you. Focus on pursuing Him and praising Him for what you do have rather than what you don’t. Remember that the contentment found in Him is the only contentment that lasts.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 7
What does it say?
Job explained his restlessness, sharing details about the physical and mental suffering he was enduring. He asked why God was testing him every moment of his day.
What does it mean?
Job’s suffering was so multifaceted that he didn’t have a moment’s relief. Even if the physical pain eased enough to allow sleep, nightmares would awaken him. The effects of restlessness and hopelessness wracked Job’s body and emotions to the point that he begged God to leave him alone, if only for a brief moment. Job didn’t understand why God allowed him to suffer so greatly or why He wouldn’t at least forgive him of his sin and restore him. His only comfort was in knowing that one day he would die, and the suffering would end.
How should I respond?
Suffering will not always be understood on this side of Heaven. Some suffering is the result of natural consequences: fall off a roof, and you’ll likely break bones. But what about suffering that can’t be explained, as when a newborn baby dies? Unexplained adversities cause many to ask the age-old question, “Why does God allow bad things to happen?” How do you respond when God doesn’t give relief right away? Making the decision to love the Lord in spite of tragic circumstances is a matter of trust. Jot down ten things you know to be true about God’s character. When you can’t see what God is doing, you can always trust Him. Will you give Him your hopelessness today?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 29:1-30
What does it say?
Jacob labored seven years for the right to marry Rachel, but he was deceived by her father, Laban. Rachel was given to Jacob after Leah’s bridal week, but he had to work seven more years for her.
What does it mean?
The custom of the day required that the oldest daughter be married before the youngest. When Laban made his agreement with Jacob, he knowingly deceived him with the promise of marrying the younger daughter, Rachel. This is not the first time deception was used in this family. Jacob deceived his father for his older brother Esau’s blessing. This was done at the encouragement of Rebekah (Laban’s sister). In both cases, what was rightfully earned was deceitfully taken with significant long-term cost. Now Jacob understands how Esau felt as he experienced firsthand the price of deception.
How should I respond?
Deception is dangerous and can have significant long-term impact. The choice Jacob faced is the same choice we face when we encounter this behavior: Do we focus on the wrong done to us, or do we allow God to use it to shine light into similar places in our lives? As difficult as it might be sometimes, eliminating deceit in our homes and our families shows the character God desires in all of us. Ask God to show you where deception exists in your life, and with His help, eliminate it.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 6
What does it say?
Job spoke to his three friends, asking them for comfort rather than arguments.
What does it mean?
When Job needed comfort, his friends poured salt into an open wound. His emotions erupted after being rebuked by Eliphaz. Job was ready for God to take him before he denied or spoke against the Lord. Job needed encouragement. He wanted his friends to simply be there for him. Had there been something Job could have done to end the suffering, he would have gladly done it. He needed companionship, but his friends had no understanding of what he was going through or how to help him.
How should I respond?
We often try to fix situations and even people. But despite our best intentions, we sometimes have no idea what to say to a broken-hearted friend. Sadly, you may have said the wrong thing when words weren’t really necessary at all. This week, allow God to use you as a friend who is willing to merely love and encourage someone else. You may be the only encouragement that person receives. Ask God to help you discern when to listen, when to speak, and when to just be there. You may be surprised to discover that your mere presence is enough.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 28:10-22
What does it say?
Early in Jacob’s long journey, he had a dream of angels going up and down a ladder to Heaven. God spoke and reaffirmed the covenant He had made with Abraham and Isaac.
What does it mean?
This is the first time we observe the Lord speaking directly to Jacob. As a young boy, he must have heard his grandfather Abraham talk of God’s covenant promises and His faithfulness. He was fifteen when Abraham died. Isaac also spoke to Jacob of the Lord their God. Now, God Himself spoke personally with Jacob. God made no conditions on the promises He made. Awed by what he had seen and heard, Jacob said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place.’ Knowing that this place would always be significant to him, Jacob set up a stone memorial and made a commitment to the Lord who promised, ‘I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’
How should I respond?
Have you only heard about Jesus from others or have you had your own divine encounter with God? When did your relationship with God become personal? Nothing compares to hearing His voice whisper to your soul. Jacob called the place of his encounter ‘awesome…the house of God…the gate of heaven.’ When God speaks, how are you moved? What is He calling you to do? Where is He calling you to go? God has His very best in store for you if you will trust Him, obey Him, and follow where He would have you go.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 4-5
What does it say?
In response to Job’s questioning of the Lord from Chapter 3, his friend Eliphaz mistakenly assumed that Job must have sinned and was being punished by the Lord.
What does it mean?
Job’s well-meaning friend Eliphaz talked with him about God’s holiness and righteousness, concluding that God is just and would not cause the righteous to suffer without a reason. From his viewpoint, God’s blessing was equated with righteousness, while suffering was related to sinfulness. Therefore, Eliphaz felt that Job must have sinned. While there are consequences to sin, not all suffering is the result of personal sin. The sheer presence of sin in the world has caused decay and death since Adam and Eve. Eliphaz had a hard time understanding how God could permit suffering without cause. He called on Job to repent from his sin so that God would restore him.
How should I respond?
We can all think of people who seem to prosper, despite their rejection of Christ. You may also be able to name friends who love and serve the Lord, yet they have had to suffer unimaginable pain. Some of them have deeply influenced our lives because they chose to praise God in spite of their suffering. What difficulty are you facing right now? Will you yield to God’s work in your life and choose to rejoice, knowing that God is using this time to strengthen your faith and draw you closer to Him (James 1:2-5; 12)?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 27:41-28:9
What does it say?
When Esau’s hatred intensified to a determination to kill Jacob, Rebekah convinced Isaac to send Jacob to the home of her brother Laban.
What does it mean?
Esau’s hatred for Jacob burned in his mind to the point of planning his murder. Upon hearing this, Rebekah intervened once again to protect the son she loved. She told Jacob to leave until Esau forgot about the matter. She persuaded Isaac to send Jacob to Paddan Aran to her brother’s house under the ruse of wanting Jacob to find a suitable wife—not a wife from ‘the daughters of Heth.’ Isaac agreed, blessed Jacob again, and sent him to his uncle’s home. It is unlikely that she ever saw Jacob again— a high price to pay for their deception. To retaliate, Esau married the daughter of his Uncle Ishmael.
How should I respond?
How many times do you think Rebekah longed to have her son back? What circumstance has come between you and a friend or family member? With whom have you lost touch? Would a phone call or personal note now alleviate regrets in the future? Family ties can be broken so easily, but humility and a forgiving spirit can restore what was once thought ruined. Have you, like Esau, made a bad decision just to get even with someone? Was it worth the price? God can restore those relationships if you let Him. The choice is yours.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 3
What does it say?
In a speech to his friends, Job cursed the day he was born. But after all Job had suffered, he still refused to curse God.
What does it mean?
All of Job’s worst fears had come to fruition. While he didn’t turn his back on God, Job did question, “Why?” Why would God allow so much suffering in his life? His loss caused so much heartbreak that he longed for death and for the Lord to take his life. In overwhelming pain, Job even wished he had never been born. He wasn’t suicidal, just completely broken and ready for his heartache to end. The Lord, however, had other plans for Job and refused to let him die.
How should I respond?
Asking God, “Why?” is not sin. Life can be hard. Being broken before the Lord and crying out for answers and help are a normal part of handling suffering. How have you questioned something God has permitted in your life? Asking, “Why?” doesn’t mean you don’t trust God. It’s a simple admission that you don’t see the whole picture or understand why He is allowing your heartache. What questions do you have for God today? Why don’t you go ahead and ask Him? He may show you His purpose, or He may use your question to draw you into a deeper relationship with Him.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 27:1-40
What does it say?
When Rebekah overheard Isaac’s plan to bless Esau, she convinced Jacob to trick his father so that he could get the blessing instead.
What does it mean?
In Isaac’s older years, he decided it was time to give the blessing of the firstborn to Esau. Esau was happy to oblige Isaac’s request to hunt and prepare a meal for his father before receiving his blessing. Rebekah, who obviously favored Jacob, came up with a plan to manipulate the situation and deceive her husband. Worse still, she involved her son in the devious plan. Isaac was tricked, and Jacob received the blessing. Esau was enraged when he learned of Jacob’s deception.
How should I respond?
Just about every one of us has had a situation come up in which we have twisted something so the outcome would be in our favor. It is our sinful, human nature. When, if ever, is deception ever justified? Being honest and allowing things play out without manipulation requires trusting God to work things out according to His will and not our own. When have you been tempted to help God help you? At work? At school? Is there someone you need to make things right with because you were deceptive like Jacob? If so, ask God for the grace to make things right.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Job 1-2
What does it say?
Job lost his possessions, children, and health as the result of two conversations between God and Satan in the heavenly realms.
What does it mean?
In the first two chapters of Job, two scenarios are taking place. Glimpses of Job’s life and character show how the Lord had provided for Job and blessed him with possessions and family. Appropriately, Job glorified God with how he lived his life. Even so, God permitted Satan to bring suffering into Job’s life. Once Job’s possessions, children, and health were gone, his wife encouraged him to curse God. God was not the source of Job’s suffering, but He did permit it. Job’s response was to bless the Lord regardless of his circumstances since God permits both good and bad.
How should I respond?
It’s difficult to understand suffering. However, we can rest assured that Satan’s power is limited to what God permits. What kinds of suffering has God allowed in your life? How have you responded? Has it drawn you closer to Him or pushed you away? Your ability to love and serve the Lord isn’t limited by your circumstances. Because He is eternal, God sees the whole picture: past, present, and future. You can learn from the past and try to understand the present. Jesus, however, is the sure hope for your future. Will you choose to trust Him with your circumstances today?

What does it say?
Isaac and Rebekah escaped a famine by going to Philistia. Two times God confirmed to Isaac the covenant promises that He had made to Abraham, his father.
What does it mean?
Isaac and Rebekah had to leave their home and journey to a place not devastated by the famine. God allowed Isaac to stay in the land of the Philistines. There God told Isaac that because of his father’s obedience, He would continue to be with him and bless him. God’s blessing was so evident to King Abimilech that the king made Isaac move because he was ‘much mightier’ than they were! Isaac moved down in the valley, and God continued to bless him there. God appeared to Isaac in Beersheba and told him again that He was with him and would bless him because of Abraham, his father. God’s presence was accompanied by His blessing, His provision, and His protection!
How should I respond?
Is God with you? If you have accepted Christ as Savior, know that Almighty God is with you! He is eager to bless—not to condemn and punish! What are your circumstances? What kind of famine are you fleeing? Are you spiritually dry? Emotionally famished? Physically weary? God is with you. How have you experienced His presence this week? For what specific provision and protection do you need to thank Him? Just as God was with Isaac and blessed him, He wants to bless you because you are His child.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Esther 9-10:3
What does it say?
The Jews defeated their enemies, and the Feast of Purim was established.
What does it mean?
A divine reversal of events occurred in today’s passage. On a day intended for the annihilation of the Jewish people, God’s redemption led to the destruction of their enemies, the very people who intended to destroy them. Many enemies of the Jews throughout Persia had been empowered by the edict from Haman. By allowing the Jews to defend themselves God brought judgment on their enemies in the region. Rather than a day of fear and mourning, the victory established a national day of celebration.
How should I respond?
Battles and warfare are common throughout Scripture. Many passages in the New Testament refer to the Christian life as spiritual warfare (Rom. 7:23, 2 Cor. 10:4; Eph. 6:11-17, 1 Tim 6:12). While a spiritual battle is usually a difficult and unpleasant experience, it is the means by which God makes His power known to both His enemies and His children. What spiritual victories have you had personally? Why not take a day to celebrate these victories, to remember them, to recount them to friends and family, and to thank God for them? Do you have difficulty recalling any? Then begin with the day of your salvation, and celebrate God’s reversal of your personal destiny.

What does it say?
Isaac and Rebekah had twin boys, Esau and Jacob. Years later, a famished Esau sold his better inheritance to Jacob for a bowl of stew.
What does it mean?
Isaac and Rebekah had been married twenty years before God blessed them with twins. Esau and Jacob were completely different. Esau was a hairy hunter while Jacob was a smooth-skinned homebody. After a long day of hunting, Esau came home to the delightful smell of stew simmering and couldn’t wait to dive into a bowl. Jacob, whose name means deceiver, took advantage of this opportunity and basically told his brother that it would cost him his birthright to get some dinner. Esau gave up his birthright to satisfy his temporary hunger.
How should I respond?
What captures your heart: the temporary or the eternal? What feeds your soul on Sunday: football or fellowship? It is easy to say, ‘Oh, I would never…,’ but how many times have you settled for a fleeting pleasure when God had a blessing waiting for you if you had just waited for His timing? What is your ‘bowl of stew’? Food? Alcohol? Wealth? Work? There are so many temptations Satan uses to lure us away from God’s best. Stand strong, friend! Nothing beats God’s best!

What does it say?
Abraham remarried and had six more sons. Before his death, Abraham gave gifts to his sons. He left everything he owned to Isaac.
What does it mean?
God allowed Abraham to witness many of His promises become reality. Upon Abraham’s death, Isaac and Ishmael came together to bury their father alongside Sarah in the portion of the Promised Land he rightfully owned. Abraham left great wealth; but it was his legacy of strong faith, carried to future generations, that has made the most impact.
How should I respond?
Television bombards us with ads regarding the importance of providing for our loved ones in the event of our death. But have you contemplated ways to pass on a spiritual inheritance? Tell your children and grandchildren your salvation experience. Share with them specific ways that God has worked in your life and provided exactly what you needed at just the right time. Look for opportunities to discuss Scripture, pray with them, or serve together in your church. By turning everyday life into teachable moments, you will create a spiritual legacy that will outlive you!

What does it say?
Esther revealed Haman’s intentions to the king. Haman was sentenced to death and hanged from the very gallows he built for Mordecai.
What does it mean?
Esther had submitted to her role in God’s plan and waited for His timing. God knew the very moment to reveal Haman’s plot to the king. When Ahasuerus asked Esther during the course of the meal what her request was, she knew it was time. By exposing Haman’s hatred, Esther also had to make her own nationality very clear. She had no way of knowing if the king would be furious with Haman’s ambition or with her boldness. No doubt Vashti’s fate was still fresh in her mind. Esther’s choice to personally identify with God’s people showed courage and faith as she left the outcome in God’s hands.
How should I respond?
Taking a stand for God is never the wrong decision, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. We can become so concerned with our reputation, ridicule, or even the end of certain relationships that we fail to speak up. With whom has God prompted you to talk about your faith? Are you hesitant to identify with other followers of Christ? Rather than worrying or becoming preoccupied with what other people think, obey and trust God to take care of you. Place your excuses before the Lord today, and ask Him to strengthen you. Christ will embolden you to say the right thing at the right time.

What does it say?
Abraham commissioned his servant to find a bride for his son, Isaac.
What does it mean?
According to the customs of the day, it was Abraham’s job to find a suitable wife for his son, Isaac. He entrusted the task of locating a bride for Isaac to a servant whose conduct and faithfulness were already proven. The servant sought God’s direction by requesting details concerning the woman God had chosen for Isaac. Those prayers were answered as the servant talked with Rebekah. She consented not only to go with him, but to go at once. God confirmed His direction for Isaac’s marriage when he and Rebekah met.
How should I respond?
The person you choose to marry is one of the most important decisions you will make. Marriage should always be approached carefully with prayer for God’s direction and blessing. While our culture doesn’t utilize arranged marriages, the advice of godly parents can guide a child through this pivotal point in life in order to establish a strong home. Are you praying for your children’s future spouses? It’s never too early to start. Begin by asking God to place exactly whom He wants in each life and help them understand the importance God places on the decision. If you are single, how much time do you spend seeking God’s direction and godly counsel regarding the person you should marry? Strong marriages start with prayer.

What does it say?
When King Ahasuerus couldn’t sleep, he had the record of his reign read to him. After hearing of Mordecai’s actions, the king decided to honor him, humiliating Haman.
What does it mean?
God was behind the king’s sleepless night. He not only kept the king awake, but He led the king’s servant to the exact passage He wanted Ahasuerus to hear. This is pivotal, as it altered the course of events drastically over the next twenty-four hours. God was looking after His people in general as well as ensuring Mordecai’s safety and honoring his faithfulness. Of course, with Mordecai’s blessing came Haman’s public humiliation. Not only did Haman choose how to honor Mordecai, believing it to be for himself, but he was also responsible to see that it was carried out.
How should I respond?
God uses divine interruptions to get the attention of His people and to carry out His plans. These interruptions may come in the form of sleepless nights or occur in the middle of the day. Altering our perspective allows us to see these interruptions as possible interventions by God, rather than bothersome. How closely do you pay attention to “hiccups” in your day? Consider turning those times when you can’t sleep or when you’re stuck in traffic into prayer. God may use an unexpected change in your routine to pull your focus in a new direction. Today, pay attention!

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 23
What does it say?
After the death of his wife Sarah, Abraham negotiates the purchase of a cave for her burial.
What does it mean?
The small burial plot Abraham bought for his wife, Sarah, became the first piece of land he owned in Canaan, the land God had promised to give him over 77 years before. Abraham believed so completely in God’s ability to keep His promise that he acted as if it were already a reality. He firmly believed his descendants would own all of the land one day; therefore, he was determined to pay any price for Sarah to be buried in Canaan. Abraham’s actions backed up what he claimed to believe—that’s true faith.
How should I respond?
Faith claims what it cannot see, trusting God to supernaturally accomplish His plans. What promises of God are you claiming by faith? Every follower of Christ has the promise of His return and a future home in Heaven. Are you living as if Heaven were already your home? Or, have you been distracted by temporary trinkets and pleasures? When you live for God’s purposes, you store up treasure in Heaven (Matthew 6:19-21). How will you invest in eternal things today rather than temporal? Faith is proven by our actions, not our words.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Esther 5
What does it say?
Esther invited the king and Haman to dinner. Haman plotted against Mordecai.
What does it mean?
While Esther’s position deepened her humility, Haman’s position exacerbated his pride. The invitation to join Queen Esther and King Ahasuerus for a private dinner puffed him up even more. Yet he found it difficult to enjoy his privileged position and wealth because the resistance of one man, Mordecai, consumed him. Haman’s discontent was so significant that his friends and family encouraged him to humiliate Mordecai and have him sentenced to death. At least then, he believed, he could find peace and take pleasure in his greatness.
How should I respond?
Humility is not a sign of weakness, but evidence that you are drawing strength from God. Pride is the opposite attitude, a resistance of the need for God in your personal affairs. Pride does not produce contentment, but an ever-increasing dissatisfaction with your current circumstances. There is no peace in an unending pursuit of personal satisfaction. Pride is destructive both personally and spiritually. In what areas of your life have pride and discontent started to take over? Ask God for help in shifting your perspective from reliance on your own ability to dependence on Him. Pride destroys, but humility produces greatness.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 22
What does it say?
God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. After testing Abraham’s faith, God provided a substitute sacrifice and renewed His covenant with Abraham.
What does it mean?
God tested Abraham, not to tempt him to sin, but to prove his faith. It was not God’s intention for Isaac to actually be sacrificed; that would contradict God’s character and His promises to Abraham. Faith in God had taught Abraham not to argue with His instructions, but to trust and obey. He was confident that God was good and that His promises could not be broken. Abraham proved that he trusted God with the one thing he had waited for the longest – his son. Strong faith is often exercised with strong trials.
How should I respond?
Whatever is dearest to you on the earth is your Isaac. Are you willing to give that person or object by faith into God’s hands? Sometimes a prized possession or treasured relationship can become an idol, replacing God’s rightful position in our hearts. What is that earthly thing or person in your life today? Can you unreservedly release that to God? Faith is like a muscle that only becomes stronger when it’s exercised.

What does it say?
The Jewish people were devastated by the news of Haman’s plot. Mordecai urged Esther to approach the king to plead for mercy.
What does it mean?
Fulfilling Mordecai’s request would put Esther’s life on the line. The Lord would deliver His people, whether she spoke up or not. Her courage to act came from knowing that God wanted to use her as part of His plan to rescue His people. She was not queen by accident or coincidence; God had positioned Esther for a purpose. Mordecai’s faith inspired Esther to remember God’s past faithfulness. She knew the value of seeking God and asked the people of God to join her in fasting and prayer. She took her requests to the King of kings prior to approaching her earthly king.
How should I respond?
As a follower of Christ, your life has purpose. Your position and circumstances aren’t coincidence or luck. God wants to use your life as part of His plan. The Lord will accomplish His purpose with or without us. However, He offers us the privilege of joining Him to be a part of something special. Finding the courage to be part of His work is the result of prayer and spending time in His Word. In what ways has God been asking you to join Him in His work? How are you allowing God to use your position, your relationships, or career opportunities? Like Esther, you may very well have been positioned “for such a time as this!”

What does it say?
Abimelech’s servants had seized one of Abraham’s wells without Abimelech’s knowledge. The two men established the Treaty at Beersheba to settle the issue.
What does it mean?
Abimelech saw evidence of God’s hand on everything Abraham did. It was obvious that the promises of God to Abraham would be fulfilled. It was in Abimelech’s best interest to have a peaceful relationship with a person of Abraham’s standing and character, so he was honest about the ownership of the well and sought to settle the issue quickly. Both men chose to seek peace rather than additional conflict. Abraham’s gifts to Abimelech secured the well as his permanent possession, avoiding future disputes. When all was said and done, Abraham was not ashamed to publicly worship his God, Jehovah.
How should I respond?
When conflicts arise, you have a choice: fight the person or fight the problem. The more time you spend trying to prove that you’re right, the longer the conflict will linger. How do you handle issues within your family, at the office, or at school? If you are the first to offer solutions with kind, calm words, it can defuse the entire situation. With whom do you need to make peace? When there’s friction, does your response cause others to notice that your relationship with Christ is the most important aspect of your life?

What does it say?
Haman was enraged that Mordecai refused to bow down to him. Haman used his position with the king to attempt to annihilate the Jewish people.
What does it mean?
Haman’s promotion came with the honor of having the king’s servants bow to him. As a Jew, however, Mordecai knew it was wrong to bow to anyone or anything other than the Lord. Even though the other servants questioned his decision and pressured him to bow to Haman, Mordecai stood firm. Then he went a step further by disclosing his reason: he was Jewish. Haman was furious with Mordecai’s resistance and determined in that moment to destroy all the Jews.
How should I respond?
One person can make a difference by taking a stand for God and truth. That kind of resolve can set the stage for Him to do something special, although it may initially cause conflict with others. How have you possibly compromised your beliefs in order to fit in? Have you chosen to say nothing rather than stand for godly principles? Resolve to make your commitment firm by asking God to provide you with strength and power as you study His Word and submit to the Holy Spirit. You won’t have to look far to find an opportunity to take a stand for Christ. How will you make a difference today?

What does it say?
Abraham planned a feast to celebrate the weaning of Isaac. When Ishmael mocked Isaac, Sarah became angry and demanded that Abraham order Hagar and Ishmael to leave.
What does it mean?
The arrival of Isaac was an occasion for both joy and heartache in Abraham’s household. His birth fulfilled God’s promise. However, years earlier Sarah had disregarded God’s perfect plan and had taken matters into her own hands. Ishmael was born but was not the chosen son. Isaac was. Radical twists and turns occurred once Sarah’s anger and jealousy surfaced. Banishment from Abraham’s camp required a fresh new perspective for Hagar and Ishmael. God was faithful. He met them in desolation and provided consolation.
How should I respond?
Circumstances in life can change abruptly and sometimes for the worse. It has been said that faith begins when man’s power ends and God’s power begins. Desperation draws us near to God to seek his wisdom and strength. What has changed in your life without warning? Where have you turned for help? Is there a trusted friend who will present a different perspective? Seeking God’s promises in Scripture and praying specifically will help guard your heart from becoming bitter. Like Hagar, you are not alone. God sees, hears and is beside you to help. Will you turn toward Him or away?

What does it say?
Esther was chosen to be the new queen. Her cousin Mordecai saved the king from a plot to take his life.
What does it mean?
The search for a new queen was a fearful and anxious time for the young women in Ahasuerus’ kingdom. They were involuntarily taken from their homes and sent off to spend the rest of their lives with hundreds of other women in the king’s harem. Despite the dire circumstances, Esther kept her composure, stayed humble, and listened to wise counsel – all of which led to her finding favor with the king. Life had taken an unexpected turn, but God was positioning her for His purpose.
How should I respond?
Unexpected and unwelcome changes often leave us asking, “Why?” A need for understanding can be a distraction from trusting God. Self-imposed pity parties about our circumstances pull our focus away from the Lord, causing us to miss what God is working out, both in us and through us. What situation in your life has you perplexed and asking God, “Why?” Take time to honestly talk with God. Then turn that question into “What?” or “How?” by asking, “What do You want to do in and through me? How can I glorify You with my response to these circumstances?” God may be using your circumstances to position you perfectly for His purpose.

What does it say?
Sarah became pregnant when she was 90 years old—way past her days of fertility— just as God promised. Her laughter of doubt at God’s promise turned into laughter of joy.
What does it mean?
God keeps His promises even when the promises seem impossible. Who would have believed that a 90-year-old woman would be able to get pregnant and bear a child in her old age? Abraham and Sarah laughed at the idea when they first heard it. However, after Sarah gave birth to her own son, she named him Isaac, which means ‘laughter.’ Her laughter of doubt was turned into laughter of joy and thankfulness. Sarah came to realize that with God nothing is impossible. He made this seemingly impossible promise come true to demonstrate His power and faithfulness.
How should I respond?
Is there a promise God has made to you that you might consider laughing at because it sounds impossible? He has promised to forgive you for your sins if you confess them to Him (1 John 1:9). Does this sound too good to be true? He has also promised that you will not be tempted beyond what you are able to handle (1 Cor. 13:10). Is there an area of your life in which you feel pressure to give in or give up? Talk to God today about His promises. Ask Him for help in understanding and believing them. Trust God to turn your doubt into rejoicing and thankfulness for His promises.

What does it say?
King Ahasuerus celebrated his power and wealth. Vashti was removed as queen.
What does it mean?
King Ahasuerus was a proud, quick-tempered man who celebrated his excessive wealth with extravagance. As the king of a vast empire, Ahasuerus was accustomed to controlling everything and everyone. Queen Vashti, however, refused to be controlled. There aren’t clear explanations as to why she refused the king’s order, but her actions breached both royal protocol and cultural etiquette. The king’s humiliation quickly turned to anger. Banishing Vashti from court and removing her as queen seemed the only way to salvage his reputation. Ahasuerus, once again, had the illusion of control.
How should I respond?
Pride often leads us to believe that we know what’s best. Like King Ahasuerus, we try to control our circumstances and the people around us. Manipulation of any kind shows a lack of trust in our sovereign God. What situation has sent you scrambling for a way to fix it? Who are you subtly attempting to control? Examine your plans and motives in light of God’s Word. Ask the Lord to reveal where you’re working toward a different set of goals and on a different timetable than His. Then give those areas over to God’s control.

What does it say?
Once again, Abraham instructed Sarah to say she was his sister, and Abimelech took her into his harem. God appeared to Abimelech to warn him of the outcome if he treated Sarah as a wife.
What does it mean?
Abraham seemed to have forgotten the lesson from his previous experience in Egypt when he was untruthful about his relationship with Sarah. Rather than learning from his past mistakes, he repeated the sin of deceit and once more caused Sarah’s virtue to be vulnerable. Abraham was blinded by his own fear rather than focused on Sarah’s safety. God protected her this time as well, but He allowed Abimelech to publicly reprimand Abraham, the future father of God’s people.
How should I respond?
Those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it! We’ve all had moments of repeated consequences because we did not learn our lesson the first time. What words or behavior from the past week do you need to avoid in the future? How did God act in mercy or use someone to correct you? Learning from mistakes requires an understanding of why you behaved that way in the first place. Did you act or speak out of fear, pride, or discouragement? Ask God for help with the underlying issue. Thank Him for the grace He has shown you and move on!

What does it say?
The wickedness in Sodom and Gomorrah finally resulted in God’s total destruction of those cities. After fleeing with their father, Lot’s daughters conspired to seduce him.
What does it mean?
The depth of evil in Sodom and Gomorrah demanded that a holy God intercede with judgment. Lot had gradually moved from living toward Sodom to being part of the city. Though Lot was a righteous man and grieved by ‘the lawless deeds he saw and heard’ (II Peter 2:7-8), his hesitation to leave and his wife’s backward glance are indications that they were far too comfortable living among the wicked. It was by the Lord’s mercy that the angels took the four of them by the hand and led them out to safety. The sordid manipulation of Lot by his daughters is clear evidence that they had embraced the thinking and lifestyle of the cities in which they had lived.
How should I respond?
You don’t have to look far to see evidence of depravity in our society. Moral values are almost a thing of the past. What sinful behavior grieves your heart? What worldly attitudes have you allowed to infiltrate your thinking so slowly that it’s hardly noticeable? Take a mental inventory of the entertainment choices and friends who influence your thoughts and behavior. You can’t impact the world if you’re isolated from it, but neither can you be an effective witness for Christ if you’ve grown accustomed to sin. Commit to read God’s Word every day, allowing Him to be the chief influence in your heart and mind. It’s not easy to stand alone, but God can enable you to live a holy life that draws others to Him.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Nehemiah 12:27-47
What does it say?
Nehemiah and the Israelites completed the task of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem and celebrated the event by offering a ceremony of praise to God.
What does it mean?
Consider how the odds were stacked against Nehemiah and the Israelites’ completing the wall. They returned from captivity to a devastated capital city. They were poor, outnumbered, and surrounded by violent enemies. The future of the entire nation rested on the success of this small band. Yet God’s provision was more than enough to ensure success. The people’s natural response was to give all the credit for that success to God. The celebration, which could be heard far away, spilled over into their daily lives as they gave generously to support the Levites and the temple services.
How should I respond?
Birthdays, graduations, and anniversaries are all reasons for celebration. Today’s passage reminds us that celebration is also in order when a God-given goal is completed. Like the Israelites, the focus of the celebration should be on God’s provision and enabling, not our own efforts. What task has God given you to do? How has He provided for your success despite the obstacles? Take time to stop and celebrate accomplishments at home, at work, and in ministry. If it has been some time since you last celebrated God’s unfailing goodness, today is a great day to start.

What does it say?
The Lord, along with two angels, appeared to Abraham in the form of men. He again foretold the birth of Isaac, as well as the fall of the wicked cities of the plains.
What does it mean?
As three men approached Abraham and Sarah’s home, Abraham recognized that these were not ordinary men but angels accompanying the Lord Himself. The Lord spoke to Abraham as a friend (James 2:23), telling him of the coming destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. With great humility and heartfelt emotion, Abraham entreated the Lord for the lives of the people living there. Abraham displayed boldness in asking God over and over to show leniency to the wicked in order to save the righteous. It is to Abraham’s credit that he desired mercy, rather than judgment, on those wicked cities.
How should I respond?
We like to talk about God’s love, but we rarely discuss God’s judgment on sin, which can fall at any time on any nation. Intercession for the world around you is the responsibility of every follower of Christ. What specific things are you praying about that could change the direction of your community and nation? Do you honestly desire God’s mercy for those who live contrary to His commands? How often do you pray that your neighbors, government leaders, and those in authority would repent and come to Christ? Start today. Be intentional. It might be your boldness that brings a community to Christ.

What does it say?
Nehemiah led the Israelites in making a vow to keep God’s commandments and properly support the temple.
What does it mean?
During their years of captivity, the Israelites had forgotten many of God’s instructions given through Moses. Under Nehemiah’s guidance, the Israelites again listened to the Law of God and made a vow to uphold His instructions in three distinct ways. First, they agreed to separate themselves from the influence of nations that did not follow God’s commands. Next, the Israelites agreed to resume all of the temple ceremonies and to keep them exactly as God instructed. Finally, even though they possessed little wealth, the Jewish people agreed to give their tithes generously to support the temple.
How should I respond?
Scripture teaches that there is a connection between spiritual health and commitment to the local church. Voluntary commitment to God’s house draws us closer to God and to each other. Giving of ourselves to support the church provides a common purpose and keeps our spirits healthy. How are you working with other believers to help your local church thrive? What does it say?
God gave new names to Abraham and Sarah, enlarged His promises, and established the sign of the covenant—circumcision.
What does it mean?
Changing Abram and Sarai’s names to Abraham (‘father of many’) and Sarah (‘princess’), reinforced the fact that God would keep his long-awaited promise of a family. Their new names symbolized a new identity in Him and a future that rested in God’s hands. Circumcision would be the sign of God’s covenant with Abraham and Isaac, the son of promise, setting apart God’s chosen people from the others in the land. Abraham demonstrated his faith in all God told him by immediately and fully obeying.
How should I respond?
As a believer, you also have a new identity – ‘child of God.’ That identity gives you a new future in Christ and entitles you to the promises God has made to all who call Him, ‘Father’ (Galatians 3:14). God’s promises in the New Testament are His new covenant with you through Jesus Christ. That covenant is sealed through the circumcision of your heart—symbolic of the change made in your life by accepting Jesus as Lord (2 Cor. 5:17). How is your identity in Christ evident to those around you? Your obedience to God’s Word demonstrates your faith in His promises.

What does it say?
The Levites led Israel in prayer – praising the Lord’s name, confessing their sins, and recognizing His faithfulness despite their continual disobedience.
What does it mean?
The grief Israel felt over their sin after reading the Book of the Law resulted in individual and corporate repentance. The Lord’s name and attributes were praised as the Levites offered thankful recognition of all that He had done for every generation of Israelites. The bulk of the prayer, however, is a confession of the nation’s long history of sin, which led to their present circumstances. Although enslaved in their own land, they asked for only one thing: that He would not regard their present suffering lightly. Even in “great distress” they focused on the greatness and faithfulness of their God.
How should I respond?
Reading Scripture and talking to God go hand-in-hand; one should naturally lead to the other. The prayer in today’s passage is a beautiful example for us to follow. Too often our prayers are so filled with asking for God’s provision and protection that we forget to thank Him for His faithfulness. But consider the other two parts of this prayer – praise and confession. How much time do you spend praising the name and character of the Lord? Try reading this passage as a personal prayer. Praise God for His attributes listed; then confess your own sins in place of Israel’s. Focus on His faithfulness today.

What does it say?
Sarai urged Abram to have a child by her handmaiden, Hagar. The resulting conflict caused Hagar to flee to the desert where God comforted her before sending her back.
What does it mean?
Sarai’s grief at remaining barren caused her to take matters into her own hands. Fathering a child by a wife’s handmaiden was a common practice, but it was not how God intended to fulfill His promise to Abram. Sarai’s desire to control the situation, as well as Abram’s conceding, resulted in strife and discord in their home. But God didn’t simply remove Hagar and continue with His plan. The Lord’s care for her in the wilderness demonstrated that He saw her, knew her situation, and loved her. Abram and Sarai would have to live with the consequences of their choice.
How should I respond?
We love to be in control, trusting our own logic and common sense to solve issues in which we can’t see God at work. In what situation are you about to take matters into your own hands, like Sarai? But taking control also means taking the consequences of your actions. Being impatient can cause even more difficulties than you’re dealing with at the present time. Are you, like Hagar, going through a wilderness experience? Have you been driven to a place of hopelessness? As a believer, Christ has promised to never leave you. He sees you and wants to comfort you right now—where you are.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Nehemiah 8
What does it say?
The people of Israel worshiped the Lord and wept as Ezra read the Book of the Law of Moses. They then joyfully celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles.
What does it mean?
The walls of Jerusalem had been rebuilt, but the spiritual condition of the nation still needed restoration. The people living in Jerusalem still had a Babylonian mindset from decades of captivity. The leaders rightly understood that God’s Word alone was the solution to Israel’s spiritual void. As Ezra read from the Book of the Law of Moses and the Levites gave instructions, those listening understood and grieved over their sinful condition. God’s Word is intended to instruct, comfort, and convict. But Nehemiah also wanted the nation to celebrate their renewed understanding and identification with their God – which was the entire purpose of rebuilding the wall.
How should I respond?
It’s nice to have well-maintained facilities in which to gather as a church. But the building only serves its purpose as we understand and respond to the clear teaching of God’s Word. Our initial reaction to the instruction, conviction, and comfort found in the Bible should be joyfulness. Even grief over sin is cause for joy; you can’t correct sin until you identify it. How are you actively going beyond the reading of Scripture? Do you attend a Life Group, weekly worship services, or read biblically sound books to increase your understanding? A correct response to Scripture is essential to spiritual growth.

What does it say?
God understood when Abram expressed disappointment that he remained childless. The Lord again restated His will and covenant. He also foretold what the years would bring to the future nation.
What does it mean?
Abram and Sarai were distressed about their childless state. God reminded Abram that He was all he needed, but Abram’s response showed his discouragement that the promise of a child from God had not been fulfilled. As Abram poured out his distress, God re-affirmed His covenant, showing His constant care for Abram’s concerns and needs. God caused Abram to fall into a deep sleep, during which he had a vision of the future nation that would come from his offspring. God will fulfill His promise in His time.
How should I respond?
What are you currently waiting on God for? Has it been so long that it seems God has forgotten you? It is easy to think He has answered, ‘No’ when He may be saying, ‘Wait.’ During those times, being patient for God’s answer increases your faith. Like Abram, tell God exactly how you feel. He cares for you enormously and wants to meet your needs in His way and in His time. A deeper knowledge of His Word will always encourage you. Make a list of the verses that admonish you to ‘wait on the Lord’ and memorize them. He never changes, and His promises are true and constant. Continue to trust that God is working out His timeline in your circumstances. He will never fail you.

What does it say?
Nehemiah’s enemies unsuccessfully tried to lure him away from his work and into harm. The surrounding nations became afraid when the wall was completed in 52 days.
What does it mean?
Sanballat and company had failed to stop the building of the wall, so they turned their attention to weakening or removing Nehemiah’s influence over the people of Jerusalem. Through repeated attempts they tried to discredit him and even threatened his life. Because Nehemiah was confident of the great work God had called him to do, he didn’t get distracted, try to defend his reputation, or run and hide. Instead, he stayed focused on the task at hand. God continually gave Nehemiah determination and discernment to see through their deceptive schemes.
How should I respond?
Satan will continually oppose anyone doing a great work for God. If he can discourage or discredit you, then the entire project is at risk. What “great work” has God given you to do? Raise children? Lead a class or ministry within your church? Don’t let fear or intimidation distract you from your God-given task. Like Nehemiah, be confident in the work God has given you to do and stay committed to its completion. Ask God for the discernment and resolve to go on with your work, regardless of the opposition you face.|Further Reading: Nehemiah 7

What does it say?
When Sodom was attacked, Abram left immediately to free Lot and the captives.
What does it mean?
Lot had moved from living “toward” the sinful city of Sodom to living in it as a resident. When Sodom came under attack, he and his neighbors were taken prisoner in battle. Abram gathered his servants and allies and successfully rescued all the captives. The king of Sodom desired to reward Abram, who declined the overture, desiring that only God get credit for his wealth. He wanted nothing to do with anything from that wicked city. Instead of accepting riches, Abram paid homage to Melchizedek, introduced in this chapter as a priest of the Most High God.
How should I respond?
Like Lot, it’s impossible for a believer to live close to “the world” without eventually suffering for it. Who in your family or circle of friends is in some type of captivity due to a sinful habit or lifestyle? Are you willing to come to their aid? Ask God for the wisdom and strength to face the challenge. What about you? What temptations inch you closer and closer to thoughts and actions that displease the Lord? It’s impossible to tip-toe around the edge of sin without eventually falling in. Like Abram, keeping the proper distance will give you the proper perspective.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Nehemiah 5
What does it say?
Nehemiah put a stop to slavery and usury between the Jewish people and refused to take the governor’s allotment. He remained devoted to building the wall.
What does it mean?
Nehemiah led by example. Completely devoting himself to God’s work, he determined not to use the privileges of his position at the expense of the people. He did not tax them for his support or take the food allotted to the governor. Others, however, had tried to gain financially from the economic misfortune of their countrymen. Nehemiah demonstrated an understanding of God’s love and concern for the poor and oppressed by pouring out that same love to other people. His example and urging led others to do the same. No doubt, Nehemiah had earned their respect by working alongside the other builders rather than simply overseeing the project.
How should I respond?
Make a quick list of qualities you expect a leader to have. Now, circle the ones that line up with God’s Word (e.g., honest, just, kind, fair). Which traits did Nehemiah model? We all have wonderful ideas of how leaders should act, but do we exemplify those same qualities in our own lives? As you look back over your list, put a check beside the qualities you possess. Although you may not be an elected leader, consider the areas of influence God has given you within your family, job, and community. Rather than use that influence for personal gain, ask God to help you be a servant leader today.

What does it say?
Abram began the journey back to Bethel as soon as the famine ended. Recurring strife between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot made a parting of ways necessary.
What does it mean?
Abram had grown very rich in Egypt, and now the large herds of Abram and Lot were too much for that area of Canaan. Abram generously and unselfishly gave his younger kinsman first choice of the land, showing his desire for restoring the strained relationship. Lot saw the fertile area around Sodom and selected what seemed the best soil without taking into account the wickedness of the people. Abram continued traveling to Hebron, again building an altar of worship where God re-affirmed His covenant.
How should I respond?
Often, loving your neighbor and family requires sacrifice. In fact, we’re often more generous with acquaintances than with the people we live with! With whom in your family do you have a strained relationship? What opportunity will you have this week to put their needs before your own? When you do, you are fulfilling the second most important commandment in Scripture (Matthew 22:37-40). Will you, like Abram, trust God enough to give up what seems to be “the best”? Keeping the peace may require some sacrifice on your part, but your actions will honor God before your entire family.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Nehemiah 4
What does it say?
Nehemiah and his countrymen defended the wall against the threat of attack. They continued to build despite ridicule from their enemies.
What does it mean?
Nehemiah didn’t give in to ridicule, physical threats, discouragement, or fear. Instead, he reminded the people that the Lord, “who is great and awesome,” would fight for them and frustrate the plans of the enemy. Nehemiah kept the focus on the job God had given them to do. He and his workers continued to repair the wall as well as watch for enemy attack. Their diligent resolve and defense strategy ensured that God’s plan would prevail, regardless of opposition.
How should I respond?
What has God asked you to build? A family, business, or church? Satan still tries to sabotage us with ridicule, threats, discouragement, and fear. This shouldn’t be a surprise, since any eternal work for God will face opposition. Scripture gives us the enemy’s tactics and even tells us how to counter them (Eph. 6:10-18). Does your fear sometimes seem greater than your faith? How has ridicule or discouragement distracted you from building? You can take heart because God remains faithful. We need to remember who God is and resolve to defend our “wall.”

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 12:10-20
What does it say?
Canaan suffered a severe drought and famine. Abram temporarily relocated to Egypt, but his fear of being killed caused him to ask Sarai to say she was his sister, not his wife.
What does it mean?
Abram believed only drastic action would save his family and chose to go to Egypt until the famine in Canaan ended. However, Abram gave in to fear and asked his wife to participate in a half-truth. Sarai was his father’s daughter (Gen. 20:12) but not his mother’s. She was both his wife and half-sister. Abram’s uncharacteristic deception left both Sarai and the Egyptians open to sin and taught his family that deceit is acceptable. His actions also demonstrated a lack of trust in God to protect him. God Himself was a defense for Sarai in this situation—He kept her safe. It was only God’s grace that caused this episode to end well.
How should I respond?
Since childhood we’ve all been told that honesty is the best policy. If you’re a parent, you teach and expect honesty in your children. But, like Abram, we all have moments when fear, selfishness, or convenience tempts us to be less than completely honest. A half-truth might technically be correct; but if the objective is to mislead someone, then you’re practicing deception. In what situation do you need to relinquish control and trust God for the outcome? Has your family learned to trust or to doubt God by watching your example? Remember, a half-truth is a whole lie.

What does it say?
When Abram was seventy-five years of age, God called him from his father’s people, telling him to leave the idolatrous land of his birth and journey to a land God would show him.
What does it mean?
God chose Abram to be the recipient of an extraordinary covenant. He promised Abram that he would be the father of a great nation, with blessings not only for himself but for all the families of the earth. Abram’s trust in God was so great that he did not question but immediately obeyed God’s command to travel as God led him. With his wife, servants, and possessions, he eventually came to the land God had selected. In that place Abram built an altar of worship, witnessing to the people of the land that his faith was in an unseen God.
How should I respond?
Obedience to God’s call often means stepping out in faith. If God were to call you to a new destination, job, or school, would you be willing to leave extended family or friends, following as He directs? What are some emotions you might feel? Can you tell God sincerely that you want only His will for your life? He has plans for you that you may be unaware of. If your desire is for God’s blessing on your life, obey and follow wherever He leads. He has someone in that place in need of your witness for Christ.

What does it say?
After receiving news that Jerusalem was in ruins and its inhabitants disgraced, Nehemiah confessed the sins of the nation and asked God for favor with the king.
What does it mean?
Nehemiah and many of God’s people were captives in Persia. Those who had been allowed to return to Jerusalem had intermarried with people from other nations and had taken on their pagan practices. This once great nation, a symbol of God’s richest blessings, had become a disgrace. Nehemiah’s immediate response to the condition of the city and its inhabitants was to mourn, fast, and pray. He confessed his own sin as well as that of his countrymen. Through it all, Nehemiah understood that God’s promises were still true and that restoration of God’s people was possible.
How should I respond?
You don’t have to look very hard to find stories of professing Christians whose lives have been turned upside down by sin and its devastating consequences. What is your initial reaction to another believer’s moral or ethical failure? When God reveals sin – anyone’s sin – our response should be sorrow and repentance. Not being heartbroken could be an indication that pride has deceived us into rationalizing our own sin. Instead, earnestly pray and ask God to reveal your shortcomings, claiming His promise of forgiveness. Then pray for the person who was caught in sin. Restoration is possible!

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 11:1-9
What does it say?
Because of their rebellion and disobedience, God confused the people’s language and scattered them around the earth.
What does it mean?
It didn’t take long after the flood for mankind to once again rebel against God. At this time, all the people on earth spoke the same language, allowing them to become unified in thoughts and actions. God knew that it was this unity coupled with man’s sinful nature that gave them power to rebel against Him. Building the Tower of Babel was an attempt to reach Heaven and establish a name for themselves as a powerful nation apart from the Lord. But defying God always has consequences. He confused their language so that they could no longer understand each other and separated them to put a stop to their rebellion.
How should I respond?
Our society is full of people who want to be famous just for the sake of being famous. Their biggest goal is simply to be known. Pride and human nature are always self-promoting. Is your chief desire to build a name for yourself or to glorify the name of God? He promises to elevate those who humble themselves under Him (1 Peter 5:6.) In what ways have you defied God by seeking your own interests? What were the consequences? In order to have a proper relationship with God, it is essential to accept His authority over your life. As God, it is His right to deal with defiance justly and appropriately. Today, how will you set aside your desire to be known and determine to elevate God instead?

What does it say?
The Israelites who were guilty of intermarriage with pagan women confessed their unfaithfulness and made a covenant to separate from their pagan wives.
What does it mean?
There is no doubt that the decision to send away the pagan wives and children caused heartache and division. The Israelites were not banned from marrying women from other nations, as long as they had converted to the Jewish faith. However, God had specifically forbidden intermarriage with women who worshiped idols. Obedience was important for the nation to remain true to their worship of the Lord. Although these events in Jewish history are difficult to understand, the case-by-case investigations most likely determined which wives worshiped the Lord God of Israel and Him only.

Dating websites match personalities, political opinions, and interests in order to make a connection. However, no connection is stronger than living for Christ. Sharing spiritual beliefs is vital to a healthy marriage. Because marriage is sacred to God, it should be to us as well. So, what should you do if married to an unbeliever? Scripture is clear and concise: the believing marriage partner is to do everything possible to preserve the marriage (1 Cor. 7:12-20). Let your obedience to God’s Word be a spiritual example and influence to your spouse. Pray daily that your spouse will see his or her sin and receive God’s forgiveness. It may be your influence that leads your mate to faith in Christ.

What does it say?
Ham told his brothers that their father was drunk and uncovered in his tent. When Noah woke, he cursed Ham’s descendants; but Shem and Japheth received blessings.
What does it mean?
Rather than showing respect and discretion, Ham thought seeing his father naked was a joke, revealing his true character and setting up a pattern of bad behavior that continued through his descendants. (Ham
'
s descendants, Canaanites, Ninevites and Amorites, were all enemies of God’s people.) Shem and Japheth acted respectfully by walking backward to avoid seeing their father and covered him with a robe. Their descendants reflected the benefits of respectful behavior and attitude. From Shem would come Abraham (‘friend of God’– James 2:23), Isaac, Jacob, and eventually Christ. How should I respond?

What does it say?
Ezra was told of the people’s disobedience regarding intermarriage with pagans. Grieved and distressed by what he heard, Ezra turned to the Lord in prayer.
What does it mean?
The law of God prohibited the Israelites from intermarriage with pagans (Deut. 7). Marriage is an intimate relationship. The religious beliefs, morals, and values of the husband and wife greatly influence their children. Marriage to women from nations that practiced idol worship would have lasting effects on Israel’s present families and future generations. It also put them in a dangerous position because intermarriage with pagans violated God’s law. Ezra understood the devastating consequences of breaking the Lord’s clear commands. Once again, the future of the nation was in God’s hands.
How should I respond?
It’s easy to think we can dabble in sin every once in a while without consequence. But this kind of thinking is dangerous. One sin inevitably leads to another and dulls the conscience. Before you know it, one act of compromise has pulled you into a lifestyle of sin. God’s warnings are His protection from sin and its consequences. What temptations are you currently facing? Have you resisted, or have you dabbled? Ask the Lord to show you any areas in which you’ve compromised. Then seek His forgiveness and turn away from the sin before you are caught in a cycle of disobedience.

What does it say?
Noah and his family left the ark when the waters receded. God then made a covenant with Noah and his descendants. He promised that He would never again destroy the earth with a flood.
What does it mean?
Noah’s family took care of the animals on the ark for over a year. As glad as Noah probably was that his time in the ark was completed, he didn’t forget that it was God who saved them from the flood and kept them safe. He worshiped God immediately when he was on dry land again. Noah recognized God’s faithfulness to his family through the judgment imposed by the flood. God’s covenant promise, symbolized by the rainbow, is a constant reminder of His faithfulness.
How should I respond?
God often allows difficult situations to go on much longer than we like or feel comfortable with. However, those are the very things that shape our character and affect our decisions. How you respond during the storms of life will largely determine who you become when they are over. What particular storm are you weathering just now? You can always trust that God still loves you and that you’re not going through it alone. Do you recognize God’s faithfulness in the midst of the problem? How has He provided and protected? Like Noah, don’t move on today until you thank and worship Him for what He’s done and Who He is.

What does it say?
God extended His favor to Ezra through King Artaxerxes. Ezra was granted freedom to return to Jerusalem to teach, lead, and govern the Israelites.
What does it mean?
Ezra made it a priority to study, obey, and teach the law of God. With God’s guidance, Ezra led the people spiritually. Artaxerxes saw this as an asset because he wanted to ensure peace throughout his empire. Israel would have no need to rebel against Artaxerxes when guaranteed the ability to worship the Lord without fear. Ezra’s diligence and obedience opened the door to religious freedom for God’s people. Once again, God used a pagan king to fulfill His purposes for Israel. In turn, God received glory and honor from His people.

What does it say?
God carried out His plan to destroy the earth and everything in it with a flood.
What does it mean?
Noah spent 120 years building the ark without seeing any evidence of rain. Year after year he worked diligently—believing that God was going to do what He said He would do. For 120 years everyone around him continued to rebel against God and ignore His warning. The time it took to construct the ark gave ample time for repentance, yet not one person did repent. God’s judgment came as promised. His very nature cannot allow sin to continue unchecked. While Noah and his family were inside the ark, protected from God’s wrath, everyone outside perished.
How should I respond?
Can you imagine being the only family in the entire world who lived faithful and godly lives? Our society moves further away from the teaching of Scripture every day. It of- ten seems as if sin is rampant and God is absent. But He has not changed; no matter how long it takes, we can trust that Jesus will fulfill his promise to return and judge the world. What choice have you made? Have you chosen to believe God and His Word, or are you taking your chances outside of Christ? God has given ample time to turn to Him in repentance. His judgment may not always be immediate, but it is always certain.

What does it say?
After confirmation that Cyrus had granted the Israelites permission to rebuild the temple, the work continued uninterrupted until it was finished.
What does it mean?
After 21 years, everything the people needed to resume their covenant relationship with God was finally restored. The rebuilding of the temple fulfilled the people’s need for proper fellowship with Him. They worshiped freely and celebrated the Passover in recognition of all that God had accomplished on their behalf. Even those who had stayed in Jerusalem during the exile and had taken on Gentile customs, once again separated themselves to the Lord. God’s people served and worshiped in His house, just as He had intended.
How should I respond?
Christians today gather in houses of worship all over the world. Although every church is unique, places associated with the name of Christ should share some of the same characteristics. When God’s house operates the way He intended, it becomes a place of joy. Your local church is a place to share and hear how God is working in the lives of His followers. The preaching of God’s Word brings repentance, spiritual rebirth, and recognition of His blessings and faithfulness. How are you giving your time and talents to God’s house? Your contribution may be just the thing that brings someone else joy.

What does it say?
God saw the corruption of man and gave Noah instructions for building an ark to save his family from God’s judgment.
What does it mean?
Through the six generations between Adam and Noah, man became increasingly corrupt. Noah and his family, however, would be spared from God’s judgment on the world because he was ‘a righteous man’ and ‘walked faithfully with God.’ That faithfulness was tested when God commanded Noah to build an ark in preparation for a flood that would destroy everything and everyone on the earth. At five hundred years old, surrounded by corruption and unbelief, Noah obeyed immediately and without question.
How should I respond?
When God looks at your life, does he see faithfulness or corruption? If you lived in the time of Noah, do you think you would have been spared? Faithfulness and obedience all the time and in every way is difficult—especially when you are unable to see or understand all God is doing. What has God asked you to do that requires extreme faith? What has been your response? Each day you have an opportunity to respond to God in faith, trust, and obedience. What you do reveals much more about your faith than what you say.

What does it say?
The Israelites’ work was stopped briefly when they faced opposition, but the work resumed after Haggai and Zechariah encouraged the people.
What does it mean?
When kings of surrounding enemy nations noticed the Israelite’s progress in rebuilding their temple, they became concerned. They feared the Israelites would be too powerful if the project were completed. Accusations were made, and the Israelites were challenged repeatedly to account for what they were doing. When work was stopped for a time, the enemies seemed to have succeeded. However, this reconstruction was vital to the people’s covenant relationship with God, and it had to be completed. Haggai and Zechariah’s encouraging words helped the Israelites continue the work regardless of what they were facing.
How should I respond?
Facing opposition should not come as a surprise when we we’re seeking to serve and honor God. Satan likes nothing better than to foul up anything we are doing that furthers God’s plans. What setback has discouraged you from following God’s will? It’s important to keep going. Continuing to work despite roadblocks now will make it easier next time. It will also give you the tools to help someone else in the same situation. Don’t give up! Your endurance through tough times may encourage someone else to keep going.

What does it say?
Adam and Eve had two children, Cain and Abel. Cain killed his brother Abel.
What does it mean?
The story of Cain and Abel is the first recorded event that shows the effect of sin in the world. Hebrews 11:4 tells us that ‘By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain.’ Cain’s prideful attitude led to anger toward God and jealousy toward his brother when his offering was rejected. Abel’s murder was the first taking of human life, the first spilling of human blood as a result of a person’s sin. When questioned by God, Cain continued this sinful cycle with lies and indifference.
How should I respond?
As sinful people living in a sinful world, we are plagued with feelings of anger, jealousy, deceit, indifference, and hatred. You may not commit murder, but wrong thoughts and emotions lead to wrong actions. Are you experiencing negative feelings toward God, a family member, co-worker, or fellow student? Be honest with God about how you feel — He knows anyway! Ask Him to reveal the underlying issue, such as pride or bitterness, and determine to rely solely on Him as you work through it. If your attitudes and emotions are not controlled by God, they will end up controlling you.

What does it say?
The Israelites took the first steps toward rebuilding as the altar and foundation of the temple were put into place.
What does it mean?
It may not have seemed like much to some, but an altar and a foundation were a good start. Yet even before the foundation of the temple was laid, the Israelites offered sacrifices on the altar and worshipped the Lord. He had been faithful throughout their exile and captivity, even though it was His discipline. He had not forgotten His people or His promises to them. Now their act of worship on the newly erected altar showed their desire to be His people. Although it was just the beginning, the Israelites were confident their God would faithfully dwell among them again.
How should I respond?
God’s faithfulness is not always seen in big miraculous events; it’s often the little things that have the greatest significance. God shows He’s with us every day in all types of ways. Sometimes we just fail to take notice. How has God been faithful to you this week? Did you give Him credit for the small victories or things that may seem to be only coincidence? How can you be more aware of His presence in your life? Consider journaling or even taking pictures to document how God is working. God’s faithfulness never changes. Like Israel, we have reason to be confident in the God we serve.

What does it say?
Sin entered the world through the disobedience of Adam and Eve.
What does it mean?
Because of their disobedience, Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden, and their lives became very different from what God intended. The serpent enticed Eve to disobey God by appealing to her sense of pride. The passage doesn’t record any objection from Adam as he joined her defiant action. Although they offered excuses, the guilt of their choice was on them. The consequences of their disobedience included pain in childbirth, toil in work, and eventual physical death for them as well as for all future generations. Even the earth responded to the presence of sin by producing thorns and thistles. One sinful act had devastating consequences on life and the world.
How should I respond?
Why do bad things happen in the world? When Adam and Eve chose to disobey, sin entered the world; and their lives, as well as ours, were forever changed. The existence of sin means our world is now full of terrible things that God never meant for us to experience. We, too, choose daily between obedience and disobedience. No matter what excuses you make, if you choose to sin, it will always affect your life negatively. In what way might you be defying God’s instructions? What consequences can you avoid today by choosing to obey?

What does it say?
God moved the heart of Cyrus, the Persian king. A proclamation was issued allowing the Israelites to return from exile and to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.
What does it mean?
Jeremiah’s prophecy of Israel’s release from captivity in Babylon was about to be fulfilled. Cyrus may have thought his proclamation and financial support were making it all possible, but God was once more using a pagan king to accomplish His plan. Without the temple there was no place to make atonement for sin through sacrifices. The lack of a sacrificial system had prevented the nation’s worship of God as defined by the Mosaic Law. It was time for the Israelites to return to their covenant relationship with God. Only the one true King could make that possible.
How should I respond?
No matter which political party you support, it is important to remember that our elected officials are not really in control. God still rules over them all (Proverbs 19:21; 21:1). It seems at times that things are a complete mess. The Israelites probably thought the same thing. But nothing that happened yesterday and nothing that will happen today or tomorrow are out of the realm of God’s knowledge or control. Scripture states that “every knee” will bow one day in recognition of God’s rule. Today, no matter what the news brings about the state of our world, take heart. Our King still rules!|Further Reading: Ezra 2

After six days of creation, God established a day of rest. A detailed account is then given regarding the creation of man, woman, and the Garden of Eden.
What does it mean?
Food, companionship and rest have been part of basic human needs since the cre- ation of the world. God placed Adam in the garden with ample food to sustain him and satisfied his need for companionship by creating a woman and instituting marriage. Upon completion of creation, God set an example for them of rest on the seventh day. But God also included boundaries and work as part of His perfect order. Adam was given the task of caring for the plants and animals. Along with this responsibility, God set a boundary in His command: ‘Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat.’
How should I respond?
Because He created us, God knows exactly what we need. Many of us rarely forget to eat, but how well are you functioning within God’s design for rest, marriage, and work? Start by regularly setting aside a day to rest, focusing on God and the spiritual needs in your life and home. When you return to the work week, recognize it as a means of purpose and provision. But God has also given us boundaries for our protection. Which one are you dangerously close to crossing? What changes do you need to make in your life to honor God’s original plan for living?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – 2 Chronicles 36
What does it say?
After Josiah’s death, there was a succession of evil kings. Despite God’s repeated warnings, the people turned away and were taken away into captivity.
What does it mean?
King Josiah’s life was dedicated to the spiritual restoration of God’s people. After his death, the nation lived under a succession of kings who did evil in the Lord’s eyes. God chose to respond with grace in the face of open, defiant sin. Even so, the people wouldn’t listen. The compassionate God, who very much wanted a relationship with His people, could no longer refrain from discipline. The punishment was severe but necessary to preserve His Name, the integrity of His chosen people, and His promise of a Messiah.
How should I respond?
How often is your first response anger rather than compassion? It can seem almost justified in the face of a great offense. But reacting in anger is not what God desires nor does it reflect His character. In what situations do you need to be more longsuffering with others as God was with Israel? How often has the Lord given you multiple chances to obey in areas regarding your thought life, entertainment choices, or sinful attitudes? God desires for His followers to show the same grace and mercy that He has shown to them.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Genesis 1
What does it say?
In six days God created the heavens, the world, and everything in it. He created man and woman in His own image, giving them the earth to fill and rule.
What does it mean?
God is so powerful that He spoke the world into existence from complete emptiness. On the sixth day, He created man and woman in His own image, making fellowship with Him and worship of Him possible. He placed them in a garden that offered everything they would ever need. Additionally, God gave them authority over His earthly creation. Along with this authority came the responsibility to take care of all that He had provided. When God looked at the man and woman, surrounded by everything He had created, He said it was, ‘very good.’
How should I respond?
What parts of creation have you taken time to appreciate this week: a sunrise, a mountain view, or the taste of a favorite food? God intentionally designed the world for your enjoyment and provision. From the beginning, God loved you immeasurably. You are His masterpiece, designed to have a relationship with your Creator. How does viewing yourself and others in the image of God encourage you to share His love with them? Slow down today, and thank God for how He designed you and the world around you. This week, how can you be a better steward of everything He has provided?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – 2 Chronicles 35
What does it say?
Josiah led his people to celebrate the Passover as the nation remembered what the Lord had done for them in years past.
What does it mean?
The nation of Israel had long forgotten the Passover and their obligation to observe it. Now, energized by the re-discovery of the law, the people came together for a celebration so grand that its equal could be found only in Israel’s distant past. Specific attention was given to every detail. Most significant, however, was the fact that the celebration far exceeded the requirement of the law. Rather than observe Passover as a mere duty or ritual, the nation showed fervor and excitement in thanking God for His miraculous work. The people finally showed the passion for God He so richly deserved.
How should I respond?
In the busyness of life, it can be easy to take for granted all that God has done for us. Even the observance of holidays can be more about obligation and less about remembrance and refection. Simply going through the motions can rob us of the joy associated with special days. Have your holidays been a time of thankfulness and celebration? As you approach a new year, stop to reflect on how much you have to be thankful for. Make a list and set aside time specifically to praise and thank God. This year, recapture the joy of celebrating what He has done!

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 148-150
What does it say?
The psalmist invites everything that has breath to sing praise to the Lord for His creation, His compassion, His powerful acts, and supreme greatness.
What does it mean?
What a magnificent closing to the praise and prayer concert of the Scriptures! The first psalm begins with God’s blessing on the man who meditates on His Word. The last psalm ends with man and “everything that has breath” praising the Lord. At times praising God can be quiet and reflective. However, the last three psalms invite all creation to join in a worship service to praise their Creator. Those who know God have special reason to sing a new song of praise to the Lord – a song of salvation. He is the One who has washed their sins away and punished their enemies. It is right to praise God in every place, in every situation, and with every breath.
How should I respond?
How do you start and end your day? Do you wake up filled with dread as you think about the day’s events, or do you remember, “This is the day the Lord has made – let us rejoice and be glad in it”? God loves to hear your praises as you gather with others to worship, but He also finds great pleasure when your praise matches the choices you make and the way you live. Try aligning your day to the structure of the Psalms. Begin the day meditating on God’s wisdom in Scripture; let your actions throughout the day be an expression of how much you love Him, and end the day showing appreciation for who God is and giving thanks for what He has done. Will you join with all creation in praise to the Lord for His greatness? Will you thank Him right now for providing for your salvation? Determine to praise the Lord in each situation you face with every breath you have until your dying day. It will energize you physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – 2 Chronicles 34:14-33
What does it say?
Hilkiah discovered the Book of the Law during the rebuilding of the Temple. As a result, the people began to deal with their longstanding disobedience.
What does it mean?
God’s people were so far removed from obedience that they had even lost the sacred law He gave them to live by. The Book of the Law was the heartbeat of the nation and its discovery sent shock waves throughout the kingdom. This momentous occasion humbled the people and reminded them of a long-forgotten truth: God always requires obedience to His commands. With the re-institution of the practices of the law, restoration of the kingdom began. The people could finally worship and obey God the way that He desired.
How should I respond?
Being confronted with our own disobedience can be sobering – especially when we weren’t aware that we were doing wrong. However, a lack of awareness does not absolve us of our responsibility. God has given us His Word to teach us what He requires. Also, He has given us the Holy Spirit to instruct us and give us the power to do what is right. How diligently do you search Scripture to learn God’s character and His commands? Are you hoping to find leniency through simple ignorance of God’s Word? It is impossible to live an abundant, fruitful Christian life apart from God’s revelation of Himself through the Bible. What effect will Scripture have on you today?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Psalms 146-147
What does it say?
The psalmist would praise and trust the Lord all of his life because His faithfulness endures. He challenged Israel to praise God for His revealed laws and Word.
What does it mean?
It’s generally thought that the last five psalms were written when the second temple was completed, and the walls of Jerusalem had been rebuilt. That’s a fitting explanation for why these psalms begin with the same three words, “Praise the Lord.” During Israel’s captivity and return, the writer had learned to place his hope in God instead of in people. Only the Creator of Heaven and Earth sustains the troubled, lifts up those who are humbled, and heals the brokenhearted. He will not fail those who put their trust in Him. Israel had special cause to praise the Lord; no other nation had the revelation of God’s wisdom and person through His laws and decrees. It was fitting to praise Him.
How should I respond?
What challenges are you facing right now? Whom do you trust for the answers? God can be trusted to provide what you need when you spend time in His Word and in prayer. If you’re worried, you can turn to Him for peace. If you are lonely, you can turn to Him for friendship. If your heart is broken, you can turn to Him for healing. If you feel powerless, you can turn to Him for strength. You can even thank and praise Him before the answers come because God is forever faithful to those who choose to hope in Him.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – 2 Chronicles 34:1-13
What does it say?
For 31 years Josiah reigned in Jerusalem and did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He cleansed the land of idols and restored the temple.
What does it mean?
For many years the kings of Israel led the nation into various forms of idolatry. The landscape, once defined by the unmatched splendor of the house of God, was now littered with idols and pagan altars of worship. Josiah’s radical approach to the elimination of these abominations showed that his heart was dedicated to ridding the nation of anything that offended God. But true change meant not only the complete elimination of everything that drew the people away from God but also the restoration of the only legitimate house of worship – the temple of the Lord.
How should I respond?
Dealing with spiritual distractions can be difficult. It’s easy to believe that ignoring them is enough. Like Josiah, we need to recognize that any form of sin that isn’t completely removed represents a future opportunity to sin. What temptation needs to be removed from your life with the focus and intensity shown by Josiah? Any habit you remove needs to be replaced with a new one: set aside time for daily Bible study and prayer, join a small group, or find a place to volunteer in your church. Though this kind of commitment is challenging, the effect on your relationship with God will be life-changing.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 22
What does it say?
John continued his description of the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, with the river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb.
What does it mean?
John’s vision in the final chapter of Revelation paints a picture of God’s impending victory. Believers through the ages are participants in God’s incredible story – a story of redemption for whoever wishes to accept the free gift of the water of life. The Spirit of God and His bride, the church, invite all to come to Christ. The Lord Jesus promises that each one will be rewarded according to what he has done. His followers eagerly wait for the return of the victorious King, the Lamb of God who testifies, “I am coming soon.”
How should I respond?
What thoughts immediately come to mind when you read about Christ’s return? Are you ready, or are you overly focused on your own plans here and now? Jesus’ imminent return should propel us to be more mature in our faith with each passing day. Take a spiritual inventory to prepare for the coming year. What spiritual fruit would you like to experience in your life this year? Determine what must take place in order to get there. Take time in the new year to pray – asking God for the wisdom and strength to make those changes. Will you commit now to live this year in expectation of Christ’s return?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – 2 Chronicles 33
What does it say?
Manasseh led Judah into more evil than the nations God had destroyed before them. But Manasseh humbled himself before the Lord after he was taken prisoner by Assyria.
What does it mean?
Manasseh thought he could live any way he chose. But God loves His children too much to allow open rebellion against His name and against what is best for them. By disregarding God’s correcting words, Manasseh also rejected God’s promises and His presence. So the Lord brought about the most humbling circumstance possible in the life of a king – being led away captive by a hook in his nose. It wasn’t until Manasseh hit rock bottom that he sought the Lord. However, Manasseh’s repentance couldn’t wipe away years of influence, and his son Amon continued his evil lifestyle as king.
How should I respond?
God’s Word provides us with comfort and reveals His character and promises. Scripture also convicts us of sin, pointing out where we’re out of sync with God’s expressed will. When we disregard His Word and choose sin over obedience, God may allow difficult circumstances to grab our attention. The allure of sin can be so strong that we often don’t look to Him until other things have been taken away. Have you tried to ignore the Lord’s correction in your life? Humbly ask His forgiveness right now, change your course, and experience His presence. Why wait for Him to humble you?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 21
What does it say?
God will create a new Heaven and a new Earth and eradicate pain and sorrow. He will make His dwelling place with mankind once again.
What does it mean?
God was there when the world began, and He will be there at the end. Soon after creation, Satan successfully introduced sin into the human race, and holy God departed from His dwelling place with His creation. Paradise was lost! Through pain and sorrow, mankind was forbidden to access the tree of life. But Satan’s success is only temporary. In Revelation 21, we see the end of the story. Satan is defeated, sin is banished, and God will return to dwell with mankind. Death, pain, and sorrow will be conquered forever. Fellowship with God will be restored – paradise regained!
How should I respond?
Have you ever wondered what living in the Garden of Eden would have been like? When sin entered the world, so did all kinds of heartache and pain. We can get so preoccupied with our earthly problems that we forget God has a magnificent plan for our eternal future – no more death, no more tears, no more pain! Until then, He intends for us to experience the abundant life He has planned for us right now. Are you missing out on the fullness of God’s wonderful plan for you today? The sorrows of life are certain, but remember that they are also temporary.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – 2 Chronicles 32:24-33
What does it say?
Hezekiah repented of pride after the Lord miraculously answered his prayer to save his life from a serious illness. God tested Hezekiah’s heart after he had succeeded at much.
What does it mean?
Even though Hezekiah ruled over Judah as a godly king, he struggled with pride. After all, his wealth required great storehouses. Also, the Lord had given him a miraculous sign that his life would be extended 15 years after his life-threatening illness (2 Kings 20). It was evident to all that Hezekiah was blessed and protected by his God. But the Lord withdrew His Spirit from Hezekiah when he displayed to envoys from Babylon all the treasures of his storehouses, revealing a foolish and prideful heart. Hezekiah came face-to-face with the reality of who he was without the Lord’s wisdom and guidance.
How should I respond?
Your Achilles heel may not be pride, as Hezekiah’s was, but we each deal with some kind of sin issue that tends to bubble to the surface repeatedly. Without the guidance and conviction of the Holy Spirit, that sin could subtly take control – even while you are successfully serving the Lord. So how can you protect yourself from yourself? First, recognize the issue, and call it what it is – sin. Then, submit your heart and mind to the Holy Spirit daily, asking God to convict you when you’re out of step with Him. Ask His forgiveness and move on.

MyTime, UnassignedRead – Revelation 20
What does it say?
Jesus will rule on the earth for one thousand years, and then Satan will be cast into Hell and vanquished for eternity. The Great White Throne Judgment will then take place.
What does it mean?
During Christ’s thousand-year reign, Satan will be imprisoned, unable to have any influence on the earth, while those who were martyred during the Tribulation will be raised from the dead to reign with Christ. When Satan is released after the Millennium, he will deceive the nations to attack Jerusalem. But the Lord will protect the city and devour Satan and his forces. John then saw Christ at the Great White Throne Judgment. Those whose names are written in the Book of Life will be eternally saved, but those whose names were written only in the various books recording their deeds on the earth will be judged and cast into the lake of fire.
How should I respond?
It is only by God’s grace that your name can be written in the Book of Life. Christianity is the only message that doesn’t tell you to work your way to God. Instead, God Himself took your place and paid the penalty for your sinful state so you could be covered by His perfect righteousness. Our good deeds and works will not be enough to save us from eternal judgment. As a believer, your good works are the result of the Holy Spirit’s work inside of you. They are evidence of salvation, not a means to it. Have you placed your faith in the gracious gift of Christ’s sacrifice? Is your name recorded in the Book of Life?

MyTime, UnassignedRead – 2 Chronicles 32:1-23
What does it say?
Assyria invaded Judah and compared the Lord to the gods of other conquered nations. God annihilated their forces after Hezekiah and Isaiah cried out to Heaven for help.
What does it mean?
It’s interesting to note what King Hezekiah did as he faced the greatest challenge of his reign. First, he consulted with his officials and officers to secure the city. Next, he took time to encourage the people by reminding them that Assyria’s vast army was powerless against the Lord God. Then, with the prophet of the Lord at his side, Hezekiah cried out to God – the One insulted by Assyria’s blasphemous words. Hezekiah planned and worked as if everything depended on him, but he trusted and prayed as if everything depended on the Lord.
How should I respond?
We each have a crisis mode that kicks in when things start to go wrong. The people we surround ourselves with during those moments may determine how well we handle the situation. First, ask God to direct you to people who are knowledgeable about your particular challenge and can lay out practical steps of action. Next, don’t forget to encourage others who are facing the crisis with you. Reminding them that God is in control keeps you focused on Him as well. Finally, and most important of all, confide in a godly prayer partner. Unlike those outside of Christ, you can have full confidence in the power of God to see the situation, hear your prayers for help, and act on your behalf.
